Maine man to be sentenced for girlfriend’s murder

By The Associated Press

SKOWHEGAN, Maine — The judge who convicted a Canaan man for murder in the beating death of his 38-year-old girlfriend won’t be sentencing him on Wednesday.

Superior Court Justice Nancy Mills recused herself from the sentencing of Shannon Atwood after a defense lawyer said her guilty verdict was tainted because she knew a woman Atwood was convicted of assaulting years earlier.

Mills found Atwood guilty in the bludgeoning death of his 38-year-old girlfriend, Cheryl Murdoch. An earlier charge of killing his wife was dismissed.

Atwood will be sentenced by Justice Thomas Delahanty II in Somerset County Superior Court.

To be bludgeoned to death...must be one of the cruelest ways to die...as bad as stoning in old times. This poor young woman :( I hope this beast stays behind bars for a long time...I wish jail was more of a physical punishment...like make them clean sewer tanks...or ??? any ideas???(jail is an easy life for some...food, tv, gym area, clean clothes etc...NOT fair!)

I totally agree with you. Prisons are not enough of a punishment. He BEAT her to death, I can only imagine how her last minutes must of been. Hopefully for her it was fast. It is enough to make me want to cry. I believe that we need to do something, but is it our right to kill? Is it our right to play god? What does it teach our children? Don't get me wrong, I totally believe in the death penalty. But why house them, take care of them for years and years first. Find a use, like put them in the army to fight for their country, or in their case for their lives???? Put them on an island, with NOTHING but other bad people and make them fight to survive. Maybe when he is receiving that final blow he can know EXACTLY how she felt.

When I read of all of these women being killed at the hands of men who claim to love them. I can only think, " But by the Grace of God, there go I". I can tell you that living under the conditions that battered women live, fear and dread are constant companions. Many women stay because the men they have loved threaten to hurt their loved ones and pets. Yes, I know it happens to men too. So lets not even go there right now....

His punishment can never reach to the level of pain these women suffer. Never. Women are physically incapable of defending themselves from an angry man. I believe that there is no punishment harsh enough for this type of person. Why? Because we are a humane society. Jails have become like Motels. The only difference is, they don't have to go out and pay for their meals. They are served and have more rights than most of us do. Free medical, free housing, free heat and electric. It goes on and on. Some things have to change for these kind of people or things on the outside will remain the same. They do these things because they can and because punishment isn't all that bad. We have to keep SPEAKING OUT in order to be heard.

lala, you aren't making a whole lot of sense...believe in death penalty but do we have the right to kill or play god...her last few minutes she probably didn't even know....but I'm sure the first few were terrible....give him a gun and put him in the army.....yeah just what all the other soldiers want, a murderer with a gun....now would your god want you to punish this loser by beating him to death....any of you women ever been in jail....I never have but seriouily doubt that its as nice as your trying to make it sound....I can't imagine being couped up in my house for 24 hours much less being in a jail cell for the rest of my life.....don't get me wrong the scumbag doesn't deserve to ever walk any street again...my sympathy lies with the womans family....death penalty is good but too easy.....let him rot in jail....

No decent being condones the brutality referenced in the article - or that you allude to happened in your life; but just stop it with 'live with' noise. Leave. No %&* excuses -- just leave.

If you [anyone] chooses to stay---does the word 'enable' come to mind. Report the S.O.B./ Move on.

Do not continue to legislate responsibility [ Do the citizens of ME. know that should [any] female call [any] cop and merely accuse [any] male of stalking -- i.e. --being in the general area -- his gun rights are 'immediately' gone and he must defend himself [ hire an Atty. ] ---- and PROVE!!!!!! he was not around--or else!!

-----you can not make this stuff up.

Any creature who would strike a 'woman' for any reason besides self defense deserves[ and then---??] what society mandates, but enough of the perpetuating 'poor me' - and let's blame men laws.

As for this case - [ like the one on Hammond St. years ago ] he should be stoned -- or worse if possible

How many women has this guy hurt/killed anyway?

What IS the difference between Jail and Prison? The media constantly refers to "jail" as the location to which a convicted offender will be sent. Jails are run by counties and usually reserved for lower offenses. PRISONS, on the other hand, are for hard time convicted criminals and are run by the Dept. of Corrections. Maine isn't the only state where this grammatical error occurs but, really, wouldn't someone think a professional news organization could get it right?

As to a victim reporting an incident of abuse to law enforcement, unless the courts refuse the offender bail (and on what grounds? Remember bail is just to ensure he will appear for a court hearing on the charges unless he is considered a flight risk), he'll get out on bail - even if he just has to call his buddies. But where do most of these victims have to go? There are few shelters available and they are usually not is small towns. What if she doesn't have transportation? Most friends won't take her in for fear the offender will come after them, too. It's not all that easy, CeeBlue.

Good point Glenna.
