A new day dawning

The Central America Free Trade Agreement is written by and for corporations. It has caused enormous suffering in Central America.

The essence of CAFTA is to give corporations free rein to destroy the environment (i.e. mining of minerals and forests), pay extremely low wages and demand long working hours in prison-like conditions, and steal resources.

The agreement has resulted in the outsourcing of hundreds of Maine jobs and has kept wages low here. It also has allowed the flooding of markets by American agribusiness, which has caused Central American and Mexican farmers to abandon their farms. Fair trade respects the environment, pays a living wage and stops the flooding of foreign markets with our heavily subsidized agriculture.

A new day is dawning. We will revitalize our local businesses. We will bring employment to the cities and small towns in work that brings needed goods and services to our neighbors, and expands our way of life spiritually and culturally without development, which continues to destroy our planet.

After our basic needs are met, it is about being more, not having more. It is about more community, more sharing, more art, music and theater. We must produce goods with local resources: earth, water, seeds, wool, timber and fish. We can reduce shipping by developing community self-reliance with local energy and food security, and more rail lines.

Obey God

Sen. Damon, D-Trenton, proposes to call a homosexual relationship a “marriage.”

This is an affront to God’s teachings. In Genesis 19 of the Bible we read the story of Abraham’s nephew Lot. Lot invites strangers into his home instead of letting them spend the night in the street. The men of Sodom, “to the last man,” surround Lot’s home and demand Lot’s guests be brought out to them “that we may know them.” Lot replied, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.” The mob attempts to push past Lot and enter his home, but the strangers rescue Lot and close the door. Lot and his family soon flee to Zoar.

The Lord decrees: “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave,” he rained fire and brimstone out of heaven, “and he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground …”

In Leviticus 18 we read: “I am the Lord. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” God warns men who do such acts that they defile themselves and the land.

It’s not who you are but what you do, he judges as an abomination. It’s not a marriage. If you love God, obey his teachings. God loves the sinner, not the sin.

Bailout, responsibility

I hope that any mortgage bailout plan President Obama comes up with and Congress ultimately passes includes provisions to consider all assets of prospective beneficiaries. There are millions of responsible taxpayers who structured their financial priorities so that they would be able to meet all their obligations. For most of them, that meant doing without many of the finer things in life such as expensive jewelry, fine furnishings, multiple pricey vehicles, and toys such as pleasure boats, RVs and ATVs. I believe that all luxury assets should be liquidated before determining one’s need for benefits under the program.

I also hope the program is not just another handout. I believe benefits should be repayable. The Treasury Department should place liens on all the assets of beneficiaries just like the IRS does to employers and taxpayers who are irresponsible in meeting their tax obligations. Besides, the program will be designed to stimulate the economy and restore real estate values. So it is not unreasonable to believe that some years from now the property will be sold at a profit.

In order to protect the program from fraud, I believe all benefits awarded should be made public including the name and address of each beneficiary as well as the banks involved and the amounts of monies paid out and any financial concessions granted.

It’s difficult for me to accept being forced to help people I’m not sure deserve it. The thought of these people later reaping undeserved gains from my help really bothers me.

Teachers vindicated

There is an old saying that says if we don’t learn the lessons of history, they will be repeated until we do. Franklin Roosevelt’s massive spending got us out of the first Great Depression. His spending bills were chastised by Republicans in a manner quite similar to the current condemnation of President Obama’s stimulus package. Roosevelt’s spending bills passed Congress without a single Republican vote, and the country grew back into prosperity.

This time around, three Republicans showed they learned from history and supported the spending bill we need to eventually bring us back to prosperity. Congratulations, Sens. Snowe, Collins and Specter. Your high school history teachers are proud of you.

Negotiated compromise

Thinking outside the box is a term associated with progress, innovation and even brilliance. Mainers should be proud of Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe for showing the courage and responsibility to not only think outside the box, but to vote outside the box on the stimulus bill. To step across a line that had metamorphosed into an almost insurmountable wall was an act of political bravery. But that is what Mainers have come to expect from both Collins and Snowe.

Collins and Snowe have been thinking, responsible members of Congress who put the good of the people at the top of their agenda. If all politicians held themselves to these standards, Congress would be a different place.

Political parties are necessary evils, but if members of those parties cannot be independent thinkers who consider and weigh issues, then the governmental process we pride ourselves on is just an illusion. The party borders need to be elastic and fluid so ideas and actions can blend and merge and the best possible answers and actions can result. Bipartisanism, compromise and negotiate — Collins and Snowe understand these words.

Snowe contributed to the stimulus bill workings not only through her position on the Senate Finance Committee, but also by trading ideas with Vice President Biden. By stepping up to the plate — and into the Oval Office to negotiate — Collins had a major role in the stimulus compromise.

Negotiated bipartisan compromise: the way government should be!

Thinking outside the box? Are you kidding? It's BRAINLESS to spend A TRILLION HERE AND A TRILLION THERE that we don't have. I can't believe the idiocy.

Jane Sanford: Thank you for your letter and thoughts.

I would like to add a very different viewpoint from the previous one.

Many of us are all for people pulling together....helping our neighbors.....we are in this life together. How awful a world if everyone had the philosophy that each person is on their own! Praying is fine, but we know we need to do a lot more than that. Also, God's son was all about helping others......His was not a selfish outlook or "everybody on their own" way of living. We know that.

As for the arts.......surely most of us do not want to see them go away. They enrich life. I cannot imagine life without music, etc.

So just wanted you to know.....many of us are not asking you to leave us alone and "out of your plans."!! And this charge of "Granola" is plain foolish.

I, for one, was quite excited to hear about the proposal to have more rail service (trains!) Great. Would love to take the train from Brewer to Ellsworth area. Some of us believe in the importance of public transporatation as an adjunct to car travel. A lot of us would like to do our share and pitch in to take some responsibility (for our environment, etc.)

Thank you again for your comments.

mr mccurdy I agree 100%. unfortunately this will never happen and dont wait for the media to expose the fraud. look at all the fraud with ssi and i have never seen an expose on it. that is unless I'm atching cops

You left out the part where Lot told the townsmen to take his daughters, instead.

The story goes on that Lot's daughters got the old man drunk in a cave after the destruction and had kids by him.

Jewish Biblical Scholars claim that was just put in there by one Jewish Tribe to show that the other Jewish Tribe that was descended from Lot was inbred.

The Bible wasn't written by God-It was written by the sin stained hands of men!

Mainelyme

Snowe,Collins,Obama,Callahan All flunked their history lesson. Roosevelt's plan did not get us out of the great depression---the second world war did because of the factorys building the war machine. You are right about history repeating itself. The plan Obama has and our reps in Washington support has been tryed and has repeatedly failed. It' called socialism--been tryed before ie LENIN and others----CHECK WITH YOUR HISTORY TEACHER!!!!!!

A choice selection of comments this morning. Ladyslipper seems to have forgotten what "representative" government means. Lot of overlap in Snowe/Collins and Obama voters. I, too, want more than my basic needs, but the old Maine joke about two brand new snowmobiles outside a crumbling shack would seem to apply here. Spending on rail and other public transportation brings much more return than bailing out the car companies. And the New Deal, despite Republican revisionism, was, in fact, a success. We're still living with many of its benefits. Greyghost needs to learn to spell.

The biggest difference with Roosevelt's time and today is that in Roosevelt's time theiy had a commodity system based on Gold and silver. They could not borrow or print money without something to back it up. Today we have a completely different system. We are using a fiat money system. There is nothing to back up our money. It is a very difficult to keep a fiat money system balanced. We see this as the system goes down and then recovers. It is better to have small fluctuations not large fluctuations. They are borrowing some money to try to resolve today's issues. They are printing a phenomenal amount of money to try to resolve today's issues, this is the problem. We are going the route of some of the greatest collapses in history. Some as recently as Zimbabwe. To put as much money into a fiat money system that we are putting in today is impossible to sustain. Think about it. If the mortgage crisis is the reason for the collapse, why would they need to infuse 100 fold the amount of money that people owe for the loans in default. It would have been extremely less expensive for us to have just paid off the loans. We the people of America are being taken on a huge ride and they are convincing people that it is the correct way to do things. Remember your finance classes? Milton Friedman warned us about printing to much money. Even Keynes said we needed to keep a balance. If wages and prices don't keep up with the money that is being put into a system it will collapse.

Edward Courtenay,

Here we go again. Preach all you want. Climb to the top of the highest mountain and scream the damnation of your god. It won't matter.

Our civil law is not based on your mythology. Not in 1776, not in 2009.

It will happen. You cannot stop it.

Mr. Courtenay: I respect your fear of your god. You have every right to be a religious person. However, our government is not run by a god, nor is our government beholden to a god's teachings. The equality marriage bill is a civil bill for a civil ceremony. Marriages are a state sanctioned union between two adults of consenting age. All American citizens should be afforded equal rights and equal protections under the law, this is guaranteed by the 14th amendment to the United States Constitution which was written by men for the people and is not predicated on what your bible says.

My defining text could have been written by L. Ron Hubbard, and I could quote you verse after verse after verse...but in the end, the government should decide that all American citizens deserve equal rights. I am just asking for the special rights that you have as a heterosexual to marry the person of your choosing.

Mr. Courtenay, thank you for speaking out. We all need to do what we can to save the sacred institute of marriage. Contact your representatives and senators ASAP.

I have to wonder how many people in that plane about to land in the hudson river cried out to God in those harrowing last few minutes. People who probably hadn't thought much about God for quite some time. We in America need to wake up and see that our country is that plane heading down. Its time we realize again that ultimately God is in control of this universe and our lives. Lets not turn our backs on Him.

4Him2day,

No offense intended, but... too late.

Calling out to a god in a momemt of terror, for a non-believer, is like exclaiming "Ouch" when you bump your knee, a verbal response to circumstances nothing more, nothing less.

Marriage is a civil union. Join a church that discriminates- problem solved!

John McCurdy-BRILLIANT and fair!

4Him2day

So, what about Lot's daughters getting the old man drunk and raping him?

Are you a descendant of Lot?

Did Adam have sex with his daughters and Eve have sex with her sons?

What about that Noah and his small family going forth and being fruitful.

Huh?

What about God telling them to all be fruitful, huh?

Was Cain killing Able a gay bashing or just a lover's spat?

So many questions and no answers.

I slipped on some rocks and almost went fully clothed head first into the Hudson River early one night.

I didn't have time to think of God as I was automatically doing a flip over to protect my face and my nose that came inches from touching the water.

I was thinking about God before and after but, I was on automatic pilot for survival while it was happening.

God was my navigator!

For a person who reads about what's going on around the United States you don't have a clue as to human nature and the God that created it.

Speak for yourself. YAWEH can and is speaking for all of us every second of the day.

Mainelyme, I knew it! You're not an Antheist! I guess even a blind squirrel gets a nut time to time. Food for thought might you say.

Why won't congress allow the transparentcy our President promised?, A bill to investigate campaign contributions and the awarding of no bid earmark contracts(oh they are not really earmarks, trust us says congress) in the budget.has been tabled. So it won't be up for a public vote. Both Dems and Repubs had the bill tabled. 9500 earmarks in the bill 60%Dems 40% Repubs, both culpable. Hope the President does what he promised by eliminating all earmarks, but I doubt it. We need to stop all wastefull spending and it is boths sides that keep wallowing in the earmark pork pen. Just calling an earmark an appropreation doesn't make it so.

Hey everybody - Check out the movie Religulous now out on DVD - it's good for a few laughs and makes a great case for why there's so much religious intolerance smeared all over posts like these. I'd love to have a rational discussion with a fundamentalist about that movie, but rational discussions with fundamentalist are kind of hard to come by.

ClydeDurp, you watched the same Glen Beck show I did didn't you? It's frustrating to say the least. These pet projects are wrong in a time when we're hurting the most as a nation. If this bill has to be (which I feel whole hearted is a bad idea) then it needs to be as lean as possible.

Check out this obit in today's New York Times.

Here's the part that caught my attention outside of the fact that this personwas a highly successful published author.

"An agnostic from the age of 14, Mr. Farmer was ambivalent about humanity’s hunger for life after death. “I can’t see any reason why such miserable, unhappy, vicious, stupid, conniving, greedy, narrow-minded, self-absorbed beings should have immortality," he said in Science Fiction Review in 1975."

The three senators who sup[ported the President's program have taken a lot of "heat" about not supporting the party and the party line on this matter. Apparently they beleive they represent their constituents and not their party. If there were more like them the programs proposed might stand a better chance of succeeding. Perhaps in Congress there should be no "aisles" and memebers should have to change their seats periodically and not exists in their tight cliques and do the people's work instead of following the party line as threy do now.

Yes Workingpoor, I have watched and listened to Glenn for years, I like that he calls out both parties. He rip republicans and democrats alike for thier hypocritsy. Not an apoligist for either party. He can seem alittle weird when you first start listening to him, but after you look behind his comic foolishness, he has been supurisngly right on what is currently happening. Predicting the dow drop 2 years ago (said it will bottom out around 4500-5000, also the Russian,Iran Venezula triumphant. Hope that one doesn't happen.

Don't forget we are Americans first. I would like to think if worst happened we could all set our differences aside and stand on one rock wich is America!

Mainelyme:8:56 AM Great and honest. .."I was thinking about God before and after but, I was on automatic pilot for survival while it was happening. God was my navigator!"

Thanks for your honesty. Well-put.....

workingpoor and albeee: Yes!!

workingpoor , RIGHT ON.

Jesus was all about giving and helping his fellow man....selfishness is sin....I know few Granolas that are selfish....but I know many conservetive that are...Remember do unto others.!

Conservatives also appear to be the largest group of porn consumers in the US...

I find that pretty damned funny.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16680-porn-in-the-usa-conservatives-are-biggest-consumers.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=online-news

ladyslipper, I know we have freedom of speech in the US and I know liberals have been guilty in what they say about part republican presidents, but do you have to continue that trend? Let's give the man a chance. Let's see what he can do. Can't we all be bigger than sort of maligning?

That's because our rocks are so much larger than yours that we can't get relief through normal means alone.

Do you remember how out-raged many people were when the 'Dixie Chicks' spoke about Bush?

Did you know that the highest divorce rates in the US are among evangelical christians?

searoses: You and me both!!!! 1:10 PM.

Unreal...who is talking about communal living??? Such leaps.....such extremes. Not many of us are thinking that way. One can want to help their "neighbor" and try to live unselfishly but not have any desire for communal living!!! Always off on some tangent! I guess that is how some people try and get attention or whatever.....

I saw how people were very giving and generous when I was volunteering for the Obama campaign. I think sometimes people make a lot of assumptions. I have no idea how generous conservatives are; hopefully very.

they practically crucified G bush on a daily basis, and now it's time to make up and move on????

ladyslipper, I for one have never bought gas at citgo since, no matter the price

Chavez didn't call Bush the Devil, but he did sniff and say he smelled sulphur, an obvious suggestion that Bush, who had appeared before Chavez, was the Devil. I was outraged at this. Everyone knows that Cheney is the Devil, and Bush merely the Devil's Advocate. Thankfully, we have banished the Devil.

fausto, yes that nasty cheney, why I actually heard he worked for a company that made a profit. Doesn't get much worse than that.

in defense of lyndenm, she was on the other site "the gay inkeeper one" and she signed off having to go to work. Chersullys there spewing off her hate, she'll be here any minute. She's trying to round up troops.

Ladyslipper, I would believe Cheney telling us that we would be greeted as liberators in Iraq before I believed anything you said about Obama. His first book describes the help he has given to family memebers.

4him2day, Cheney only took the job at Halliburton after he had, as Secretary of Defense, changed procurement policies so that Halliburton now had a gold mine in terms of easy federal money. It's called crony capitalism.

fausto: I would not believe much of anything that individual says, re Obama or anything.

It is called projection. No need for me to round up any troops.....people have their own minds and have figured it out on their own. I have no desire to round up troops....once again, you project. It is simply amazing how you get things wrong all the time.

Ever since vichet, pabmainer, (and I could name quite a lot more) said anything positive to me and seemed to want to interact with me, little authoritarian here has not liked it. vichet and others picked up on this on their own. They are very smart people.

Hate? Oh my......the ultimate projector.

yes chersully they do have minds of their own and can figure things out for themselves, that is what they have very nicely been trying to tell you.

ladyslipper: I was referring to someone else re the lies....but I can see how that came across. I was responding to some of fausto's remarks and actually was alluding to one individual...not you. (the Obama comment threw it off.) No, I do not think you lie, as much as I disagree with your viewpoints. (That is the way it goes.) But no, you are not the individual I think lies. Disagreeing with someone does not follow that the other is lying, of course.

Projecting again. From all the posts I have read, a very different message is coming across. You must be deaf.

And there is another one now on other post that sure is not thrilled with you.(addressed to you.)

So many, including lyndemn, are not taken in by you. You think just because she is "debating" religion with you, that she respects you. That message sure is not coming across.

Good luck and bye.

ok chersully, you are obviously talking about me, so i'll ask you to name the lies I've told?

ladyslipper you nailed it.

Evverything that you've quoted from the Bible!

Mainelyme

oh there are 2 left that reinforce each other. The nos are dwindling.

Mainelyme:

Even if one tries to explain anything to LS and if you are the least bit conciliatory, he /she comes back with a meanspirited comment. Anne saw this a long time ago. Every time. This is not a good person.....

And one of them in particular seems to be losing more and more allies every day.

He thinks he wins.....he wins nothing. When he engages in his zealotry, many start to get sick of it and do not post with him. He actually thinks he wins then. He "thinks" he wins and that people give up. They do not give up on their faith, but they rightly give up on such an individual. People are simplydisgusted and do not wish to think of a Christian in those terms. He is an insult to so many. But he still has his admirer LS.!

He should be putting his Christianity into action....but as many have posted today, all he does is spout off here. He truly thinks he is upsetting people but he is not in the way he thinks. He is however disgusting many. And once again, not because of his particular views....we know what it really is that is not right.

The thing is he will get no converts here or convince anyone that their faith is not as good as his. He is, instead, perhaps turning some away as they would not be able to believe in a Christianity that has such an indiviual as a spokesperson.

Mainelyme: I wouldn't even say it is what that individual quotes from the Bible. He can quote from the Bible (the verses he chooses) all he wants. No one would dispute that. Those are not the "lies" I refer to.

as far as I know that Obama's brother didn't want any of his brothers money...infact I heard the words come out of his mouth with myown ears....on Fox News....and who was talking about hippies...I was talking about the fact that selfishness is a sin....and conservetives being selfish...I've worked all my life and never had much money...but have always given of my time....which is more valuble then money in my book

searoses: Those of us who have read Obama's books, etc. are a bit more knowledgeable than those here who do not even care for him!! That is for sure. So, I hear you.

Time, yes, is more important many times than than money. I mean sure, the non-profits,etc. benefit from monetary donations, especially these days, but giving one's time to help out is so valuable and needed.

Brian Callahan; Franklin Roosevelt’s massive spending got us out of the first Great Depression?

Prior to World War II the unemployment rate averaged 9.9 percent for all of 1941.

That is hardly getting us out of the depression.

The only thing FDR gave us was the modern welfare state.

mousehunt,

Would it be OK if gays were being fired for being gay or having their job threatened for being gay, being removed from public establishments for being gay, or having their children taught that they're "abominations" in school? Would it be OK for the government to publicly denounce homosexuals as abominations and bring back sodomy laws? Would that be OK with you guys?

Mainelyme: 9:42 AM

You are a poet!

Hope you get the answers you seek from those individuals.

Bring back the sodomy laws maybe it would help.God help Maine overcome this senseless bill in the name of Jesus.Never reelect People who want this way of life shoved on us.This is Maine not some waste land or maybe we could be the landfill of the united states we have a good start. Go down 95 and take a deep breath now is that refreshing or what? Now is that the smell you want don,t smell like pine cones does it.Maybe it ,s the smell of money Maine will do anything for money just check out down town and if we let gay,s get married think of the money.Ha ha ha ha ha This state is getting out of touch with what we once was.Now it,s anything for a dollar.STOP THE MADNESS

And there you have it folks. mousehunt would make criminals out of people doing things without victims in the privacy of their own home.

Might I suggest moving to GA or Texas, two states that only had sodomy laws thrown away when the federal courts made them? Oh, and Georgia at least has a constitution defining marriage as a man and woman, and doesn't recognize domestic partnership laws (partners can't even get health coverage in that state).

Gays getting the same guarantees from the government to which they pay equal taxes isn't shoving anything on you. If you don't want to be a part of it, marry someone of the opposite sex.

What an evolved and enlightened mind.

I don't hate gays, but will anyone else be relieved when this "conversation" moves on?

Yes.

I will, that's for sure.

It,s time people stood up to the madness going on in this state we call home. And high time we put a stop to the madness thats going on around us where would we be if the world did not face down Germany during world war two? We as a people need stand up and say NO WAY NEVER IN MAINE

David889327

I'm sure we all will be relieved when it's possible to end this on going conversation. That will be when gays are treated by the law and the populace at large as equals.

This line of talk puts those of us who care about other human beings in the same company with those who don't.
