Man gets 40 years for Maine murder

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — An Augusta man who pleaded guilty to killing his 72-year-old neighbor has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Raymond Leslie Clark, who’s 36, was sentenced Wednesday in Kennebec County Superior Court. Clark pleaded guilty to murder in the February 2008 beating and strangulation death of Audrey Lou Benn, a downstairs neighbor in an Augusta apartment building. Clark told police she had confronted him about being listed on the sex offender registry.

During Wednesday’s sentencing, Justice John Nivison said Clark committed a “particularly cruel” act in killing Benn.

“This person, due to her age and frailty, was pretty much a defenseless victim,” the judge said.

Benn’s and Clark’s families addressed the court Wednesday.
