ROCKPORT, Maine — The 2009 Maine Drama Festival regional finals were held at nine locations across the state, and the winners and alternates from each school class will advance to the state finals to be held March 21-22.

More than 3,000 Maine high school students from 79 high schools took part in the 78th annual drama competition, which is sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association and the Maine Drama Council.

At the Camden Hills High School regional site, Lincoln Academy of Damariscotta won the Class A title, and Rockland High School took the Class B crown. Chosen as alternates were Erskine Academy of South China for Class A and Searsport District High School for Class B.

The winners and alternates of the regional competition held at Presque Isle High School were Presque Isle High School and Bangor High School, the alternate, for Class A, and Fort Kent High School and alternate Easton High School for Class B.

Winners of the regional competition held at Mount Desert High School in Bar Harbor were Brewer High School and alternate Mount Desert High School for Class A, and Ellsworth High School and alternate Washington Academy of East Machias for Class B.

Winners of the regional competition held at Cony High School in Augusta were Falmouth High School and alternate Windham High School for Class A, and Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield and alternate Hermon High School for Class B.

Winners of the regional competition held at Leavitt High School in Turner were Fryeburg Academy and alternate Leavitt High School for Class A, and Winthrop High School and alternate Monmouth Academy for Class B.

Winners of the regional competition held at Skowhegan High School were Skowhegan High School and alternate Edward Little High School of Auburn for Class A, and Stearns-Schenck High Schools of Millinocket and alternate Madison High School for Class B.

Winners of the regional competition held at Freeport High School were Scarborough High School and alternate Morse High School of Bath for Class A, and Wiscasset High School and alternate Freeport High School for Class B.

Winners of the regional competition held at Noble High School in North Berwick were Marshwood High School of South Berwick and alternate Westbrook High School for Class A, and Cape Elizabeth High School and alternate Old Orchard Beach High School for Class B.

Winners of the regional competition held at South Portland High School were South Portland High School and alternate Portland High School for Class A, and Yarmouth High School and alternate Catherine McAuley High School of Portland for Class B.
