SEDGWICK, Maine — Residents voted at their annual town meeting Saturday to turn down a moratorium on telecommunications towers, antennas and wind turbines in excess of 50 feet.

The Board of Selectmen sought the change to give the town time to examine possible amendments to zoning and land-use ordinances to address placement and construction of such structures.

More than 60 registered voters attended the meeting out of nearly 900 residents. The meeting began at 9 a.m. at the Sedgwick Town House.

Gordon Gianninoto was among those who spoke Saturday.

The Sedgwick resident said he supported having a telecommunication tower near his residence on Caterpillar Hill because of the need for better equipment to address the places in Hancock County where no signal is available.

Town officials have been discussing the possibility of a moratorium on towers for several years now.

“We had a cell phone tower go up on the Ridge Road a couple of years ago,” Nelson Grindal said in a previous Bangor Daily News story. “And there have been rumblings of the possibility of another one and some wind power generators. The planning board and the code enforcement officer asked us to do a moratorium to give us time to develop an ordinance to keep a control on it.”

While the moratorium was turned down, voters approved the other items on the town warrant including access and road issues

There were no contested races in municipal elections. The town election was held on Friday. Selectman Tom O’Connor died in February but nonetheless was elected to a three-year seat on the board.

Cynthia Reilly, town clerk and treasurer, said Sunday that after O’Connor died it was too late to have the ballots redone.

“He died in such a short time before the election, we did not have time to recall the ballots,” she said. “He got all of the votes that were cast, so therefore there is a failure to elect and we will be going to a special election.”

She said it would be up to the selectmen to schedule another election in the future.

I guess they'll continue to have lousy cell coverage down there in super libby land. Blue Hill is another classic when tree huggers join arm in arm protesting telecommunications workers such as myself going up that rock that's so precious. They don't like that tower being up there. Now it's odd to see these protesters with cell phones strapped to their hips. Without that tower they would have no cell service. They would also not have WERU or their high speed wireless internet. The fire dept's wouldn't have decent coverage without the repeater up there. Towers are such horrible things. :)

I thought a moratorium was a suspension of something - so if they voted down the morarorium, that means they WILL allow towers over 50 ft. Please unconfuse me.

Does any one know where Sedgewick is?

I tend to agree with EllenR, EMTDude seems so be a little lost,

The article reads that they SUSPENDED a memoratorium on towers, turbines, etc.

Sorry, just had to chime in as a Blue Hill tree hugger who pays attention to the big words, (although I don't have a cell phone strapped to my hip, no need to own one). The only telecommunication protesting I can be bothered with is get rid of UNFaripoint, that's all.

Bangorian Did you ever think to look it up on a map? Sedgwick happens to be a small town about 20 miles south of Ellsworth...you should go there some time it's very beauitful...on Caterpiller Hill you can see from Camden to MDI and it happens to be My home town...and I am very proud to say it is

Tree huggers all around.

It is good to see that Sedgwick's citizen's are in control of their community. There is a healthy balance between civilization and nature especially in community zones. If they hug a cell phone or a tree... oh well. My advice here is to "ordinance up" for aesthetically pleasing antenna's meeting what the community desires...a tree (correctly colored for year round) or a church steeple. I must commend you folks for thinking and not automatically ruling out progress and those enjoying civilization over nature and those who enjoy nature over civilization...or the in between folks. It looks like you all have the makings for going forward past the days of the out house and tin cans. If you desire now you can work together and establish ordinances for aesthetically pleasing infrastructure. The advancement into the future does not always need to look horrible...that is a choice. On the other hand...

The people who practice power and control in Mount Desert are messed up in their heads. Most who have traveled have seen the antennas which look like big old spruce trees or church steeples. It actually requires a second glance to realize its not an actual tree. I a tree hugger even have to smile upon locating a tree antenna. These people must never have to leave the Town of Mount Desert... or excuse me utopia. What a power trip they must be on...I heard they are pushing a New Comprehensive Plan for May and it is the same as the old one... restricting the locals right out. This after just putting it to their taxpayers by first reevaluating all the properties and then second flip flopping the fiscal year...36 month's of taxes required of the taxpayers over 18 month's. If that is not enough they are forever trying to drive it down the voters throats there is going to be a sewer fee in essence another bill they can jack up at will to get a double dip from the old taxpayer well. The people in that town need to wake up and realize what their leaders are saying here. With technology advancing every day they want things their way like the 1950's and they want their cut...Red Zone Wireless. I would enjoy seeing them get hit with a nice lawsuit...negligence on their part does not protect them under the TORT Claims Act...by dabbling in and restricting service here ...if a person dies especially of prominence(this wording so Mount Desert's leaders of infinite wisdom can understand) and their cell phone contributes by lack of or no signal...its court time. I heard their Town Manager likes the folks from away better as they do not complain so much. I can not believe he is not helping his cause out and building up the infrastructure. Is it too soon? Is he waiting for more good honest year round residents to be pushed out of their homes? Does he think that making it to comfortable might delay their departure? If this is not enough how about a police chief who does not have enough laws to enforce. He now wants dog owners before the judge at the whim of a complaining neighbor after 1 complaint, 2 complaints, summons for their dog barking. He is pitting the people from away over the locals (who usually have dogs). Lets face it we all know what excessive barking is...this law declares one bark justification for the law to act. What does this individual think owners should not excite or play with their dogs? What about service animals communicating with their owners? Does he think the owners should have their pets vocal cords cut? I tell you Mount Desert voters don't let your leaders clown act fool you. I will not even address this town's frequency and handling of the aftermath of some structure fires in the past several month's...We are watching from the outside and you good people are being.....big time. Your leadership, if you want to call them that, should be ashamed.

If you want people to read your diatribe, you might want to consider some paragraph formatting.

EMTdude - you were so interested in getting your point across you missed the gist of the article. tsk tsk

Could it be "mmacpuguy" is none other then Mount Desert's infamous $1550.00 a week plus benefits Town Manager...Mike MacDonald? Take a bow if it is you...be a man. FYI most who write as you so generally implied their "tirades" in these comment sections are not restricted by formatting. A blog using formatting...this must be a college educated man talking down to us the little people " tsk tsk".
