Maine's 2008 deer harvest lowest in decades

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — After a long winter with record-setting snow packs, Maine’s 2008 deer harvest was the lowest in decades.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says preliminary figures put the deer kill at 21,062, or 27 percent below the 2007 total.

Deer biologist Lee Kantar says deer yarded up on average for 140 days, compared to the normal 84 days. The result was extremely low survival rates for fawns, reflected in a 45 percent decline in the fawn harvest.

Kantar says the current winter looks similar to last year, which could mean a further decrease in any-deer permits and a reduced deer harvest in 2009.

JUST ANOTHER IGNORANT REASON WHY THE DEER KILL IS AT A ALL TIME LOW. WHY DON'T YOU PEOPLE WAKE UP AND SMELL THE ROSES. HAVE THE LOGGING COMPANIES QUIT CUTTING THE DEER YARDS OR THERE WILL BE KNOW DEER LEFT IN 2010.

Someboby neeeds to explain to (bald-scuitchi) that his administration is Dirigo us off a high cliff with nothing but pain and broken dreams waiting at the bottom

Yeah makesnosenseatall, those bad ole logging companies are also at fault for the banking crisis, AIDS in Africa, and for the Patriots losing the Super Bowl to the Giants.

There are rules in place that protect rivers, brooks, ponds and lakes for the fish. There are none for protecting the deer yards that are needed to survive year to year. Why?

No, it's GW's fault. He likes taking the blame for EVERYTHING.

Where do you think the deer yards come from originally. They don't just magically grow that way. Besides it was the high snowfall that damaged the heard last year not the logging industry.

Deer yards occur naturally, we just have to protect the yards they return to every year. For the most part any deer yard that's know is protected by a buffer zone from deforestation.

Don't forget the big bad coyote. Their eating like kings right now. And Baldie doesn't have the b, ah, hair to do anything about it.

those logger bas*#rds caused the Patriots to lose the super bowl to the Giants ?? WOW

OUTDOORSGUY, YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE HIGH SNOW FALL DAMAGED THE DEER HEARD ONLY BECAUSE THE DEER HAD NO COVER FROM THE TREES THE LOGGING COMPANIES CUT FROM THIER YARDS. AS FAR AS BUFFER ZONES BIGFOOTENHEELS, I CAN SEND YOU PHOTO'S OF THOSE ZONES WERE IT LOOKS LIKE A B-52 BOMBER CRASHED AND TOOK ALL THE TREES OUT FOR MILES. DADDYBIGGS SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN PUFFING ON TO MANY POINTED CIGARETTS TO WRIGHT A COMMENT LIKE THAT. YOU GUYS SHOULD TAKE A RIDE UP TO THE 106 ROAD OR THE ALLAGASH ROAD AND SEE FOR YOUR SELF. THERE ARE ALOT OF PLACES THERE ARE CLEAR CUTS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE. WHAT CAN SURVIVE IN THAT?????
