Ex-Vanceboro postmaster pleads guilty to theft

BANGOR, Maine — The former Vanceboro postmaster pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to misappropriation of postal funds.

Joy Gillis, 55, of Danforth admitted that she stole more than $4,000 in postal funds.

Gillis, who worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 19 years, admitted in July that she used the money to pay gambling debts and overdue bills. She told investigators that she also used some of the money to pay her nephew’s bail.

She resigned when confronted with the theft, according to court documents.

Gillis quickly repaid about $2,240 of the $4,166 she pleaded guilty to stealing.

She remains free on personal recognizance bail.

Gillis faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. She also could be ordered to pay restitution.

A sentencing date has not been set.

In an unrelated case, a Gardiner woman has been indicted for taking more than $1,400 when she worked as relief postmaster last year in South Gardiner.

Rachel Marie Walter, 21, was indicted on the charge of misappropriation of postal funds last week by a federal grand jury in Bangor.

She is scheduled to be arraigned on March 26 in federal court in Bangor.

If convicted, Walter faces the same sentence and fine as Gillis.

some people are just sooooooooooooooo dumb..19 yrs in and she blows it for under 5000.00..and for a dumb nephews bail...Joy..I shake my head at you..sheeeeshhhh

you have to wonder now, you would mail a large manilla envelope monday thru friday (weighting the same) and would always get a different price.

Mail the same thing on Saturday and the postage was always less. This package always went to the same zip code.

I`d turn in the reciept to get my money back and they would always question me about the amount.

And the postage was always jotted down in pencil except on Saturdays. By the way Saturday was the only day she didn`t work.

You have to wonder if this another way she was making money. And your reciept was hand written not thru a machine.

Also sent things thru the mail that buldge the envelope and sometimes it never arrived. Sent nitendo games to grandkids twice and never showed

Is Vassalboro near Tinkersville?

Stop, I'm too unstable for the post orface. Hows the weather in the city. Cold here. I'm moving to FL.

To previous poster: Vassalboro borders Augusta and Vanceboro is on the Canadian border. The article is about the Ex-Vanceboro postmaster.

There is no Tinkersville in Maine. What state is it located in? Is that where they manufacture Tinkertoys?

Border, it is sometimes very difficult to get a refund from USPS. I sent something 'restricted delivery' and the parcel was left with a person who was other than the intended recipient. I had to go back to the post office three times before they would issue a refund of the restricted delivery fee, because on the first two occasions the person they needed to consult with to get a definitive answer was not available.

How do they find jobs handling money with these convictions on their records? Maybe go to a state where the felonies can be expunged after a certain period of time has elapsed.

It's between Centerville, Whitneyville, Marshfield and Northfield. In the woods take a left by the big spruce tree go 2 miles and another left at the white burch. Go 300 feet and your there.
