Maine House nixes car cell phone ban

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine House overwhelmingly rejected a bill to prohibit the use of a handheld cell phones and other electronic devices while driving after representatives were assured that a broader bill to deal with distracted drivers will appear. The House voted 103-43 to reject the bill.

During a debate Thursday, opponents said they objected to exceptions listed in the bill, including police, corrections officers, firefighters, commercial drivers, doctors and others who use handheld cell phones while driving as part of their employment.

Rep. Douglas Thomas, a Ripley Republican, said the bill would let someone driving a 100,000-pound logging truck in a snowstorm talk on the cell phone, while banning it for someone driving a car in dry conditions.

Why bother, it will never happen

That would mean that they would be inconvenienced, not to mention the cops.

well... 'other electronic devices" What about CB Radios? Lets not ban PHONES, lets ban public smoking..... UGH. not that i care.... i have a bluetooth, they're CHEAP and easy to use.

We are all guilty of using hand-held cell phones while drivinig. I plan on getting a hands-free cell phone in the near future. Fortunately I drive so little, maybe 20 to 30 miles on an average day, and use my phone during the last 15 minutes of the driving day only. I believe all states should explore the subject more thoroughly and take appropriate action. On vchapes' suggestion to ban public smoking. I would favor such a thing. Let me add, the last time I bought cigarettes, a carton of 200, I paid 70 cents. Thats right, 70 cents for 200 cigarettes. Over 43 years now. My lungs shold be free and clear by now.

OMG soon there will be standard survelliance cameras in EVERYONES cars...connected right to the Maine State Police to catch all the bad habits people have, so they can arrest them all. Why can't the state just spend the money EDUCATING people of the dangers they face when texting, talking, smoking, drinking etc...while driving. I for one was impressed with the shocking message of an email I recieved with a pic of a mangled car, a dead teen and his phone was found clenched in his hand and still on with a message from a friend he was most likely reading. It was shocking...sad and unbelievable...but so realistic. SHOCK PEOPLE with realistic commercials on local tv...but then again some people are so thick they would never get it...or say "Oh that would never happen to me!"

I agree TEXTING and driving should be banned. I was in a car accident 2 years ago because the driver was texting. Stove the ol camaro all to HELL. But the damn plastic bubble of a vibe didnt have a dent. yeah... but talking and driving shouldnt be, we talk to the passengers dont we? thats just as distracting.

i wonder if other states have as many stupid people in their state goverment as we do!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even voice-operated cell phones, such as Onstar, distract the driver. Let's hope the "distraction" bill covers these type of phones as well. Anyone who appears distracted while driving, by whatever means, should be pulled over and ticketed if observed by a police officer. It's very obvious when someone is using a cell phone while driving. I see them all the time on the highway and I don't know how many times I've had to change lanes or slow down to avoid an accident. If people want to use their cell phones in the car, put makeup on, read a map, etc.,they should pull over or wait until they come up to a parking lot or rest stop.

"i wonder if other states have as many stupid people in their state goverment as we do!!!!!!!!!!!! "

It's a requirement to hold elective office.

the bill they are going to present later on will also affect eating and driving

I'm sure the cell phone lobby was writing big checks in Augusta to get that squashed. We have a law banning cell phone use by teens. Is it inforced? Nah, not in Bangor. What about smoking in a car with kids? Nah, not in Bangor. What ever happened to Law Enforcement. Remember when we had that?

they already have a law to enforce this ....its called reckless driving!!! If someone isnt driving in such a manner...leave them alone!!! hOW ABOUT THE COPS PLAYING WITH THERE LAPTOPS, DOING 75 MPH PASSING ME DOWN THE INTERSTATE???? There are alot bigger fish out there to fry!!

jjs1975 I must agree. I know a police office who talks on the cell phone to friends, messes with his laptop and drives fast, not thinking that's really all that safe, if they can do it so can we, right?

About time Augusta did something good for the people of Maine.

why ban the cell phone use while driving? on an early morning commute from Portland to Augusta traveling I95 I was passed by a car whose driving was reading a book - yes one person in the car and the driver was reading a book!! As she passed me I noticed the license plate "Maine Legislature" - with that kind of brilliance in office what else can we expect? the cell phone ban will be passed, when they balance a budget, and pigs can fly!!!
