BANGOR, Maine — The man suspected in recent armed robberies in Bangor and Kenduskeag was arrested Monday after giving himself up to police.

Travis Lawrence Gustin, 29, was arrested at the intersection of Garland and Elm streets after calling a state police trooper that morning to say he would be willing to turn himself in at that location.

State police, Bangor police and Penobscot County sheriff‘s deputies converged at the intersection and arrested Gustin at about 11:22 a.m., according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

Edwards said Gustin was arrested without incident and that no weapons were in his possession at the time.

After being questioned by detectives, Gustin was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where he remained Monday night, unable to make bail of $7,515 cash, a jail official confirmed.

Gustin, whose last known address was in Bangor, has been charged with two counts of Class B felony robbery in connection with two recent armed robberies. Each Class B charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, Edwards said.

The first robbery Gustin is accused of committing occurred at 9:08 p.m. Saturday, March 28, at the Tom T. Irving Store at 1123 Broadway, also known as Route 15, in Bangor.

The second robbery happened at 8:50 p.m. the next day just 10 miles away at Sam's Qwik Stop on Route 15 near the Stetson Road intersection in the center of Kenduskeag.

In both cases, the robber pointed a handgun at the store clerk and demanded cash. He escaped with an undisclosed amount of money in both cases. No one at either store was physically injured.

Gustin also was charged with one count of Class C felony burglary, punishable by up to five years in prison, stemming from an incident at the Curtain Shop in Bangor about two weeks ago, Edwards said. Details about that charge were not immediately available Monday night.

In addition to those charges, a jail official said Gustin also was wanted on six outstanding warrants for unpaid fines at the time of his arrest.

Gustin’s surrender came three days after state police released his photograph to the media and asked the public to be on the lookout for him.

State police said at that time that Gustin should be considered armed and dangerous. They urged anyone who saw Gustin not to approach him.

I'm so glad Travis made the right choice. I knew there was still a good person in there. And remember...innocent until proven guilty!

obviously a cry for help

Very sad that it has come to this for so many people.

maine is gonna see alot more of this very soon, and everyone will blame the slot place, but in reality it is the persciption drugs that drive peple to do this. very sad.

knowitall, you know it this time bud. presscrition drugs are driving people, good people most of them to do these things. i have a friend who had cancer, she was robbed 3 times in 2 months, by her 17 year old neighbor. i have a bad illness and am so nervous that i don't even leave the house. it seems the docs are giving those out like candy and kids easily get addicted so they will steal money to buy or break into your house and get it. i never had a gun before in my life but now do.

Cry for help ????? I say by the looks of the offenses .... STRIKE THREE .... YOUR OUT or IN I guess would be the way to put it. We need to start enforcing accountability on those that wish to avoid playing by the rules. This is the TRUE help that they need, deserve & hopefully get.

He is a scumbag lazy maggot. When my dad had money issues he took an extra job, worked days and nights and put 4 kids through college. This parasite is to lazy to work? wash dishes, clean out a barn, pick up trash.

It might happen more because we have narrow shouldered punks with zero work ethic and zero integrity.

The gun could have went off and someone could have died. throw away the key on this lazy piece of SH**

I agree with holydad, this guy has had his chances...time to pay the piper!

WOW, The first few post sound like they are sorry for him! What the hell?He is a criminal and needs to be locked up for a very long time. I cant believe people would make excuses for him.Maybe if one of you were on the wrong side of the gun you would have a different outlook. And stacie video doesnt lie.Not much to prove.

Attention landlords on Bangors East side: Please stop renting apartments to drug users and criminals. Some of us are normal people trying to live peacefully, yet we find ourselves being surrounding by your creepy tenants.

Let me start off by stating I am not defending this person's actions at all... what he is accused of doing is wrong... and then to do it again and again?!? There is NEVER an excuse that validates being dishonest, instilling fear into another human, or thieving... never a reason to take what is not rightly yours.

However... it's not just drug use that drives people to this, although not dismissing it as ONE of the many reasons they do. Some jerks just get a rush off the "adventure" aspect of theft, as just one example. Also, some of the people in Maine are not working because of lack in jobs. Yet they continue to raise taxes, causing more businesses to shut down under presssure, and then surprise, that eliminates more jobs. There are those lazy ones that choose to let the others of the world support them and not work, don't get me wrong, BUT... then you have those people who have looked, who are still looking, who have been laid off, who have been part of "down sizing" and have not a choice in the amount of work they do because they can't find work at all... it's sad really

travis is a lazy bum that likes to get in trouble he gets his thrills off it travis can't tell bein good to bein dumb ass he was trouble when a kid trouble now through the dam key and let him rot along with all of the other bums

Maybe some of you people who bitch about methadone clinics bringing crime into the area should re-evaluate. Without enough adequate treatment for addictive narcotics, this is what people resort too. The economy doesn't help either. A lot of these guys would be out there working and doing ok if there were work to be had. Im not defending him. I just think that maybe we should examine the reasons that people end up at these conclusions. Glad to see he turned himself in.

Okay first of all I would like to say that I am glad that Travis did the right thing. He wasn't going to get anywhere by trying to hide out. Second of all I want to say that Bangorian, you really need to re-evaluate the situation. People are not bad because they have or had a drug problem. I have known Travis for a long time. He was great to hang out with, always tried to help me out, and was someone that I could count on just to be there to listen. Yeah, using did send him down the wrong road, it happens to the best of us. You cant stereo-type people because of what you think that you may know. What about the unknown. I have been drug free for 3 years now thanks the Acadia Hospital and my strong will to get better. You go sit across from the parking lot of the NTP and you would be suprised by the people that you see walk through those doors. Not everyone looks like a drug addict. What does a drug addict look like? Some of them are older. One woman for example runs a business, has children even grandchildren. She would appear to be a staff member to someone who does not know that this can happen to ANYONE. Enough about the drugs. I wanted to say to you though that I hope you know that there are far worse people in the world then those who chose to use drugs. What about the skum bags on the offenders list who have does sick things to children? Are those the types of people that you want living next door to you? If not then maybe you should think about thse things. Dont just try to narrow it down to drug addicts. Apparently you dont know ayone who has or has had a problem or you would know that it can happen to the best of people. I am not trying to make excuses for Travis, as I feel that what he did is wrong, although I am saying that people dont only do this to get a quick fix. I am sure that there is more to the situation.

ConcernedFriend - I agree that people are not bad just because they have a drug problem - anyone can develop an addiction under the right circumstances. I just don't want active users living in dumpy apartments in my neighborhood while they're spending their time ripping places off to get a fix. Too many landlords in this town are willing to tolerate it and I wish that would change.

he actually feels bad about what he did. you can see it in his eyes. it's why he turned himself in. you got to give the guy a little credit, at least he lives up to his mistakes unlike most people. i can tell he now wishes he'd gone to school and gotten an education, why else would he turn himself in. he's an honest man that unfortunately had to turn to a dishonest way of living. that's my two sense. I give him credit for taking the credit.

Zero point two Fat Drunk and Stupid is no way to go through life son:)
