OAKFIELD, Maine — A Massachusetts-based wind power developer is seeking state approval to build a 51-megawatt project in the Aroostook County town of Oakfield.

In its announcement Wednesday, First Wind said the project will consist of up to 34 turbines that could generate enough energy to power more than 20,000 homes.

First Wind is no stranger to Maine. It owns and operates a 42-megawatt project in Mars Hill and a 57-megawatt project near Danforth, and has applied for a permit for a 60-megawatt project near Lincoln.

The application for the Oakfield project was filed with the Department of Environmental Protection.

ANOTHER power source controlled by out of ststers.....and Baldy I'm told. Time for us natives to take control of our state !

20.000 homes if the wind blows non-stop 24/7 365 days. not hardly. Why do they come to maine if their massachutsetts developers?hhmmm

I just went and looked at all the equipment they got there. Kinda of a funny time to file a permit after everything is moved to the site and the windmills are bought. They must have known we mainers are push-overs or that ballessdaci would push it through.

Alaskans get a rebate check from the State from oil companies extracting oil. What are folks in Maine getting from the use of our natural resources? Hmm, what would Governor Palin do?

Another raping of another set of rural Maine ridges. First Wind is relentless. Look at what they did to Mars Hill, where 18 residents on the east side of the mountain are preparing to sue them for constantly operating that project beyond the noise limits. Anyone living within a mile and a half of those turbines should drive up to Mountain Road in Mars Hill and talk to the folks up there. For more information, go to www.windaction.org and search for Mars Hill. Or go to www.friendsoflincolnlakes.org to learn about the battle in Lincoln against First Wind.

Write to the Maine DEP and demand that they hold a hearing in Oakfield on the First Wind application. Good luck to those folks who don't want their ridges and their rural way of life destroyed by First Wind. Remember, these out of state thieves are not about producing electricity. Its about how many turbines they can get up so they can raid the public treasury to make millions of dollars off subsidies.

Baldacci when do you start work for this company? I would think that priority would be given to developers IN THE STATE OF MAINE, before they can come from out of state. Hope your new job goes well, At least we will have the opportunity to get some real leadership.

Watch out Oakfield! They have chosen your town because they feel they can dupe you. This will totally change your community for the worse and the noise will be something you will always regret.

Please read the following article at Bob Vila's website - America is starting to wake up to the fact that big wind is bad. Very bad.

Maine, has very poor wind except in the western mountains and offshore. I repeat, very poor wind. Please see for yourself by clicking on on the Department of Energy's wind resource map for Maine.

They choose places like Oakfield not because they have good wind. They don't. But that is because the con is snatching the government subsidy, not harvseting the wind. They choose places like Oakfield because they think they can dupe you.

It is simply a scam to line the pockets of out of state investors via taxpayer subsidies and will leave virtually no jobs behind. But it WILL hurt your property values and quality of life. Moreover, it is the wind explosion that necessitates the $1.4 billion CMP upgrade, which will be paid for by rate payers. Maine totally comes out behind.

First Wind's Executive Vice President, Chief Development Officer is Kurt Adams. Adams was Gov. Baldacci's Chief Legal Counsel, 2003-2005, then Chairman of the Maine Public Utilities Commission, 2005-2008. The Baldacci administration is thus close to this company.

The NYS Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, has begun investigating whether First Wind improperly sought or obtained land-use agreements with residents and public officials and whether public officials received improper benefits to influence their actions.

If the press would begin to investigate the real reasons for the wind industry's activities in Maine, people would change their opinions of wind. Right now, all they know are the commercials the wind industry puts on TV. Let's hear about the massive destruction of nature the turbine complexes result in. Let's hear about the health problems (well known in Europe) from the noise and light flicker. Let's hear about who is getting what in the back rooms.

What has happenned to investigative journalism?

Watch out Oakfield and give 'em hell.

On the First Wind website there's a slogan -- "Clean Energy Made Here"

What's not to like?

The Chairman of First Wind is Jim Moog.

http://www.firstwind.com/aboutFirstWind/team.cfm

Jim Mogg is also Advisor to the Chairman of Duke Energy. Crescent Resources, Duke Energy’s land management and real estate business, also reports to Mogg.

He was named president and chief executive officer of Duke Energy Field Services (DEFS) in December 1994, and chairman, president and chief executive officer for DEFS in December 1999. Mogg was named group vice president and chief development officer on Jan. 1, 2004. He was named advisor to the chairman in April 2006.

http://ewiqa.duke-energy.com/about/leaders/mogg/

In 1999 the United States Environmental Protection Agency commenced an enforcement action against Duke Energy for failure to comply with the Clean Air Act. Duke asserted that EPA regulations under the law were arbitrarily changed over the course of 25 years. Environmental groups assert that Duke is using loopholes in the law to increase emissions. Initially, Duke prevailed at the trial court level, but in 2006 the case was argued before the Supreme Court (Environmental Defense v. Duke Energy Corp. (05-848)). The Court unanimously ruled on April 2, 2007 against Duke Energy in favor of the environmental groups.[7]

In 2002, researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have identified Duke Energy as the 46th-largest corporate producer of air pollution in the United States, with roughly 36 million pounds of toxic chemicals released annually into the air.[8] Major pollutants indicated by the study include sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, chromium compounds, and hydrogen fluoride.[9] In 2008 Duke Energy rose to the 13th position in the list, more than doubling its release of toxic chemicals to 80 million pounds per year.[10]

Oakfield gets a new fire truck from first wind if the deal passes.......woohhooo!!!

Just say "NO" to out of state wind developments that will not benefit the communities or states they are in...the power goes to the New England grid or to Canada. Say "YES" to local based solutions like those in Vinalhaven that give free power to the residents and extra money for selling the rest to the Maine state power companies.

From the Office of the Attorney General of New York State:

Subpoenas were served on Newton, Massachusetts-based First Wind (formerly known as UPC Wind) and Essex, Connecticut-based Noble Environmental Power, LLC. They are part of an investigation into whether companies developing wind farms improperly sought or obtained land-use agreements with citizens and public officials; whether improper benefits were given to public officials to influence their actions, and whether they entered into anti-competitive agreements or practices.

In recent months, the Office of the Attorney General has received numerous complaints regarding the two companies from citizens, groups and public officials in eight counties alleging improper relations between the companies and local officials and other improper practices.

http://www.oag.state.ny.us/media_center/2008/jul/july15a_08.html

Oh, and one more thing - guess who used to work at Essex, Ct. based Noble? None other than First Wind's Chief Executive Officer, Paul Gaynor, who was in charge of their purse strings as CFO.

http://www.firstwind.com/aboutFirstWind/team_gaynor.cfm

OK, so we have Chairman Mogg of the company that is being investigated by Attorney General Cuomo having been President and CEO at what researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have identified as the 46th-largest corporate producer of air pollution in the United States --- AND -- we have the CEO of First Wind Gaynor, having previously worked at Noble, the other company that Attorney General Cuomo is investigating.

What a bunch of "no to any development minds" What is the matter with you people??? Windmills will hurt us less than anything we already have. Get over it.

Over a million dollars worth of liens in Cohocton, First Wind;s wind farm in NY, where the workers aren't getting paid. The land owners like J Haynes have liens against their property.

Locally First Wind has a job opening in Danforth. When an engineer has tried to fill out an application for the job....they say they aren't taking applications. So much for local jobs. Where is the power going from Stetson Mt.? There is no room on the New England Grid for it. The turbine blades are turning however. So that takes electricty. If the power bills go unpaid. Will J Haynes get a lien?

Cramer says investing in wind farms is stupid. Karmer baby Karma

Look Oakfield , we intend to play you like as fine violin. We will use the’open meeting’ laws to have ‘our secret meetings”, because we can’t make our scheme work if we can keep you stupid. A little bribe here, a little bribe there, does wonders for you poor rural folks. Then we will bribe a few of the right people, and , whalah!, we will be in there with a project no one really wants, or can even use

. Our ability to scam the public is working in Maine. A state run by a governor too dumb to see a scam when it hits him in the face helps us to, since he tells his departments like DEP to speed up the process by executive order., and don’t listen to citizen input, which sees the scam for what it is.

Maine , we love ya! Just don’t sue us too much, because our failing tax equity financing system needs to continue this electricity scam unhindered by the constitution(we don’t have to make any power either to get our tax breaks.), We need our renewable energy credits, and you folks are our enablers. Such good fun…

Ruin an area, keep our millionaire investors happy from a investment hedge scam that , like others , is ruining the finances of the nation. We know renewable energy is expensive, but it’s the rage, and , like any rush, get it while the gettings good,( before the scam is exposed for more to see).. Carbon credits, we love ya! Over your head Mainer, get educated.

Looks like a good deal.

I'd like to see a nuke plant go in somewhere around presque isle, then we could ship the radiation to the frogs.

Sounds like the BDN should look into giving jaygee a job, this on person is obviously more skilled at researching information than the papers entire staff!

Tell me again between puffing your cigarette and breathing carbon- based fumes, about the dangers of wind.

FirstWind is from Newton Mass. How many windmills are in that town? Zilch. I guess they did not want them in THEIR backyard. The power will be sent to Canada who make cheaper power with hydro and nuclear. I will bet Canada gets a good price for even bothering with the erratic surges produced by wind. It is all about tax subsidies. Denmark has trouble with wind and has to give it away to Norway and Sweden at times. It may work on a small scale like pumping water for a farm but these industrial monsters of FirstWind do nothing for either our elec. needs or the air quality. Green credits are sold to the coal burning power plants out of state so they do not have to clean their emissions, so actually windpower is hurting our quest for cleaner air. Windsprawls are scams. We can make a better contribution to clean air by reducing our demand instead of looking for ever greater supplys.

Bigfoot: I'll take Nuc any day. Most economical. Until then, I'll take Wind. Why not more Hydro?

Everyone seems to be excited about the windmills, except those people who will be looking at it every day. I live on the lake below the Oakfield site and couldn't be more upset. The main windows of my house face the beautiful wooded mountains where they are going to place 34 massive windmills, 369 feet tall. That mountain top is only about 3/4 mi from my house. Those windmills will tower hundreds of feet above the mountain and ruin the beautiful view we love. A couple hundred dollars a year, if they pay it, could never compensate for a life-time of having to stare at those hideous windmills. Talk about selling out. Not everyone thinks this is so good. Talk to the residents around Mars Hill.

I've invested over $110,000 cash, in this property and now the beauty of the lake, woods and mountains are going to be ruined so some bussiness man can turn a huge profit. Why don't they build these stupid things in their own state. Its because Massachusettes and Kennedy don't want those egly things either.
