LINCOLN, Maine — A Lincoln man who assaulted his roommate before disappearing into the woods near his South Lincoln trailer park last week remained Tuesday in Penobscot County Jail on $2,500 cash bail, jail officials said.

Dino Merritt, 47, was charged last Wednesday with criminal threatening and domestic violence assault in connection with the incident at Dube’s Trailer Park, Police Chief William Flagg said. The victim suffered slight injuries.

At one point, local police officers, Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies, state police and a state police German shepherd searched the woods behind the park for Merritt after it was reported that he had threatened to shoot the woman and several other people with a 9 mm handgun, Flagg said.

Earlier, a Lincoln police officer had to stand off from the trailer, with Merritt and the woman inside, until help arrived because he didn’t want to inadvertently cause Merritt to make good on any threats, according to Flagg. Then Merritt escaped into the woods by going out a back door, the chief said.

Lincoln police Officer Darren Nadeau and Game Warden Bruce Loring briefly struggled with Merritt and subdued him after Merritt returned to the trailer sometime later, Flagg said.

A search of Merritt’s trailer and the woods involving the dog, Boris, and his handler, Trooper Seth Edwards, failed to locate a weapon, Flagg said.

In 2008, Merritt served a 24-hour sentence and paid a $300 fine for assault. Records at Lincoln District Court and Bangor District Court show several arrests and some convictions for assault, drugs, theft and motor vehicle charges. Merritt also has been charged with the destruction of rental property.

His criminal record, among other things, gave police cause to regard as viable the reports of Merritt threatening to use a weapon, Flagg said.

Merritt is due in Penobscot County Superior Court on June 16, court officials said.
