Burglary suspect nabbed at pawnshop

LINCOLN, Maine — A 19-year-old Lincoln man charged with burglary and failure to pay fines received a continuance in District Court on the fines Tuesday after police said they found him attempting to sell stolen items at a local pawnshop last week.

Brandon Tolman of Lincoln was charged Friday with burglary, a Class C felony that carries a one- to five-year prison sentence, and several counts of failure to pay fines. He paid $140 cash bail and was released Tuesday after being held at Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, officials said.

Police arrested Tolman at a local pawnshop Friday with several items that authorities believe were stolen from an Edwards Street address in the course of several burglaries committed there over the past several days, Police Chief William Flagg said.

Officers who attempted to arrest Tolman at a Highland Street address Thursday were thwarted when he escaped by climbing out a back window of the house, Flagg said.

Sgt. Kevin Giberson found Tolman and a friend, Perry Newell, 19, of Pleasant Point, at the West Broadway pawnshop the next day and apprehended them there, Flagg said.

Newell had several outstanding warrants against him from Washington County for unpaid fines, Flagg said. Newell briefly tried to run from Giberson but soon surrendered and was taken into custody.

Police are investigating whether Newell is involved in the Edwards Street burglaries, Flagg said.

The matter will be turned over to a grand jury in Bangor for review, Flagg said. The investigation is continuing.

Not much to do in Lincoln. Might as well rob some houses to get cash for Beer and cigs.

You can't be serious! They catch this guy, then let in go on a $140 cash bail?? Stolen goods in his hands trying to sell then at a pawn shop, and 19 years old to boot! Maybe it's just me, but what makes you think this kid will show up in court, and exactly what would be his defense?
