Poll finds Mainers split on same-sex marriage issue

Hearing on bills Wednesday at Augusta Civic Center
By Judy Harrison
BDN Staff
AUGUSTA, Maine — As leaders on both sides of the same-sex marriage debate descended on the capital Tuesday in preparation for today’s legislative hearing on the issue, an independent poll showed that Mainers are evenly divided over whether same-sex couples should be allowed to wed.

The Judiciary Committee is to hear testimony beginning at 9 a.m. today at the Augusta Civic Center on LD 1020 that would define marriage as between two people regardless of their sex, and LD 1118, which would extend to people on the state’s Domestic Partner Registry the same rights and benefits of married couples.

The poll, conducted by a Portland-based firm earlier this month, showed that 47.3 percent of those surveyed support changing Maine statutes to allow marriage licenses to be issued to any two people regardless of their sex while 49.5 percent oppose it. The rest of the Maine residents polled hadn’t made up their minds on the issue. The poll has a margin of error rate of 4.9 percent.

The Rev. Bob Emrich of the Maine Marriage Initiative dismissed the poll results Tuesday evening at an event to welcome three experts who will testify against the bill today.

“It was a small sample with a high margin of error rate,” he said. “The second question about the whether people preferred civil unions or same-sex marriage was confusing. I don’t think it means much.”

The second question asked those polled which statement came closest to describing their “position on the issue of marriage for gay and lesbian couples and civil unions?”

The poll showed 39.3 percent selected, “Support for full marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples.” Another 34.5 percent said they, “Support gay and civil unions or partnerships, but not gay marriage.” Twenty three percent of those polled said they, “Oppose any legal recognition for gay and lesbian couples.” The remaining survey respondents checked, “Don’t know.” The most recent Pan Atlantic SMS Group Omnibus Poll was conducted between April 6 and 14. A randomly selected, stratified statewide sample of 400 Maine adults was interviewed, according to a company press release.

The polling firm compared data from a similar poll on the same subject in March 2004. Since then, support for same-sex marriage has increased 9 percent while support for same sex unions has risen just 1 percent.

Maine residents that oppose both same-sex marriage and civil unions fell from 31.8 percent in 2004 to 23 percent in 2009, while the people who don’t know which they prefer rose from 2.5 to 3.3 percent.

Data from the poll showed that 49.5 percent of Mainers between the ages of 18 and 34 support same-sex marriage while just 31.7 percent of those over 55 do. Democrats — 50.3 percent of them — are more likely to favor the proposed change in marriage laws than Republicans.

Only 18.3 percent of those polled who identified themselves as members of the GOP said they support same-sex marriage. A similar gap exists geographically, with more supporters in southern Maine than in the northern and Down East regions supporting same-sex marriage.

Shenna Bellows, executive director of the Maine Civil Liberties Union that supports LD 1020, called the poll encouraging news.

“We are really encouraged by the poll results,” she said. “Clearly Maine people are ready to consider the question of [same-sex] marriage. Attitudes are moving toward acceptance.”

Today's Poll

Do you think the concept of same-sex marriage should be taught in schools?

Yes
No

Members of the Maine Marriage Alliance, a coalition of religious and secular groups and individuals dedicated to preserving traditional marriage, held a reception Tuesday night at the St. Paul Center in Augusta for three out-of-state experts expected to testify today. David Parker is a father from Lexington, Mass. He said that once same-sex marriage passes in Maine, parents who oppose it will not be able to keep their children from being “indoctrinated to concepts related to gender preference.” Parker showed copies of picture books that included same-sex parents that his 5-year-old son was given in a Massachusetts public school.

Parker said Tuesday that he and his wife discovered there were many books introducing gay relationships and gay marriage throughout the entire school. The Parkers did not seek to have the books eliminated from the curriculum, but requested that the school notify them any time issues related to same-sex couples and marriage were raised in class by teachers, so that they could remove their son from the classroom.

The school rejected their request on the grounds that same-sex marriage was legal in Massachusetts and that therefore the school could teach about it without parental permission or notification. The Parkers sued the school district in U.S. District Court in Boston, Mass., but lost the case.

“The Parkers’ concern has nothing to do with marriage,” Bellows, who is familiar with his story, said. “His concern is over a public school curriculum that teaches tolerance for lots of different types of families.”

Two conservative attorneys, William C. Duncan, director of the Marriage Law Foundation in Lehi, Utah, and Austin R. Nimocks, senior legal counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., also will testify today against efforts to repeal the Maine Defense of Marriage Act that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

I hope they make a favorable decision before our eyeballs fall right out of our heads from reading all this manufactured drivel!

I vote no! How about teaching reading or even math!

Bringing in nutjob fundy homophobes "from away?"

Too funny.

The hearing will be streamed online tomorrow in various formats, BTW:

and just like the last time the AGENDA was voted on...it will be 51-49 and it will be failed

And the lily-white homos will be entirely funded with in-state contributions? Don't kid yourself. The out-of-state deviants will throw money hand-over-fist to make Maine state #5.

You might want to research first (PAC category) on the Maine Ethics Commission's portal before spewing that homophobic hooey.

Prove it.

Looks as if Malone and Emrich have been busy in recruiting out of state homophobic fundy nutjobs to testify (which I find as hilarious).

I'm not split on same sex marriage.....Marriage should be between a MAN & A WOMAN.............

There was a time when I would have opposed gay marriage.

I've grown older and hopefully a bit smarter.

With every other aspect of our society in decay. With any vestiges of morality, decency and ethics already circling the drain; how can we, as a society, point to any group and dictate to them on those terms? That just makes us hypocrites.

As a society, we aren't one bit better than the gays we are supposedly protecting ourselves from. In fact, it can be argued they are one of the most benign groups we have in our society. I have certainly never had a problem with them, and I've known quite a few over the years...something I can't say for the heterosexual crowd.

With the rest of our society descending into a moral abyss it hardly seems fair not to invite homosexuals to accompany us. Frankly, at this point I'm of the opinion; what can it hurt? The damage has already been done.

School 's should not be teaching sexual preferences.

Was it Vermont who just allowed gay marriages? Move there if marriage is so important. Personally I don't see the point of getting married all it's done is cost me more money then it was worth.

Some are for it some aren't, just the way it is.

Don't call someone a bigot just because they don't agree with it....

Just tell me one thing. Is there anybody out there that is protesting this that isnt tied to a church somewhere? Honestly this is the churches way to take heat off of them for some of the seriously immoral things that have happened there over the past decades and put it all on the Gay community. Isnt it strange that we constantly hear about Ministers and Reverands sexually abusing children, normally of the same sex and they are the ones trying to fight this the most. Are they guilty or something? Two people regardless of faith, sexual origin race or color have the right to be together and make it legal if they so choose. The states would even benefit economically from the marriage licenses.

As for the nimrod that doesnt want sex education taught in school, let me tell ya something, our kids know far more about sex than we do and they arent learning it in school. They see it on T.V., the net, and even on thier cell phones, so if someone is willing to teach my kids about protection and keeping yourself from getting AIDS or other STD's than i say, "PLEASE" ...Teach my kid...and Thank You!!!!!

Poll? what poll? I never in all my life been "polled" in reguards to this matter. Sadly neither have several of my employee's that are gay. They are too busy working, trying to make a living, pay tax's that feed and shelter HETEROSEXUAL'S children because they are living off the state. They are so lazy that they cant be bothered to go get a job and support their family.

It's typical that the one's that are against this are leaving NEGATVIVE comments. It's a result that they are homophobic and isolated, if not now; eventually. So I guess I can do the same.

I do not care what you call it, civil union or marraige. I just want what is fair. This will not go away. If it fail's, it will come back up in a few year's. As the highly religious slowly die out or just maybe come around to common sence, this will pass. If Maine wants to stay in the stone age, thats fine. I simply will take my million dollar company and move to another country leaving this pathetic state and country even poorer than it is now and increase unemployment and one less company that generate's revenue.

Look at the world. This has all passed everywhere else. This is old new's to them. America is suppose to be ahead of the time's. Other country's use to look up to America. Now that Bush has ruined this country's image; other country's have passed us. Canadian money is almost flat againt the American dollar (just for example),! People, WAKE UP!

"Do onto others as you would wish them do onto you."

"Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:"

I wish some of you were not so closed minded. It's scary to see how people think.

The moral fiber of this country is deteriorating so fast that allowing same sex marriage fits right into the overall pattern. I never thought I'd see the day, though.

Brace yourself gary, it's only gonna get worse as special interest groups simply will not compromise, put aside their own selfish needs & do what's right for community & country. This gay marriage train wreck is a shining example of how awful this state & country has become. The libs are growing in numbers & that's why this country's going to the dogs. Long gone are the days of working together to build a better country.

About same sex marriage, and teaching about the subject, I do not know what this country is comming to when the government is thinking about teaching same sex marriage in a public school. I m Catholic and I know a few people that voted for Obama and he is for abortion, and same sex marriage.

YOU ARE NOT CATHOLIC IF YOU VOTED FOR OBAMA AND ALSO YOU ARE NOT CATHOLIC IF YOU ARE FOR ABORTIONS.

AND YOU ARE NOT CATHOLIC IF YOU WANT SAME SEX MARRIAGE'S, SO ALL OF YOU SO CALLED CATHOLIC LOOK AT YOURSELF BEFORE YOU GO TO MASS ON SUNDAY AND ASK GOD IF YOU ARE A CATHOLIC OR NOT. DRC

Open Letter to Senator John Nutting

Dear John,

Once again, the people of Maine are being subjected to yet another assault purposed to coerce the oxymoronic paradox of “Gay Marriage” upon them. Like a constant dripping, this unrelenting scourge will not go away, until, at length, the constituent base is reconciled to Current World Opinion. Regrettably, it appears that that time is near.

As an elder of the Presbyterian Church, an institution founded upon Calvinist theological traditions, I know that you believe in the sovereignty of God and the authority of the Bible. According to the writer of Ecclesiastics, the whole duty of man is to fear (revere) God and keep His commandments.

Today, a great multitude will gather in Augusta: the proponents of this initiative will proffer maudlin appeals that they only seek to gain equality and recognition as “loving” couples. Nothing could be further from the truth. These noveau existentialists have abandoned the Judeo-Christian values that you and I hold as immutable, offering instead a re-interpretation of what God really meant according to their understanding.

While I disagree with the homosexual lifestyle, I support the right of homosexuals to engage in behavior that is permissible under civil law. However, I do not support their right to denigrate the institution of marriage: this would be a travesty — a violent and aberrant assault upon generations of innocent children to come.

I beg you to examine your conscience in the light of what surely will be a difficult day. Your emotions will be tried, and your heart will break; but in the end, if you are not faithful to what you hold to be true and just in the eyes of your Creator, then you will have failed in your duty to God and man. Love is occasionally best expressed with a firm ‘No’, especially where children are concerned.

Teaching kids is quite different from them learning. Additionally, if SOME parents did a better job parenting their kids

and not believing every single thing the kid says, teaching them math, reading, writing, etc. would be a much easier

job. Teachers HAVE to teach manners, they are faced with teaching socialization skills, they need to teach kids how

to cooperate and work together amicably because ...when you meet the parents you immediately know why the kid

has no skills. Sad but true in most cases.

Who are you people trying to dictate someone's happiness? Talk about taking a step backwards! Let me remind you of a few things: "WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS." who are we to dictate some else's happiness?

This, along with many other issues, needs to be put to a public vote. I'm tired of our Commitees, legislators and pollters deciding which way things should be done. Taking a poll of a few hundred people or listening to groups that are for or against something isn't the way to decide . The public needs to vote---and if they don't go and vote than they can shut up on the issue.

To nonalee----Do you think we supposed to go by Abraham Lincolns speech . Shouldn't we go by The Holy Bible ??

What is this country comming to,,,,, who can save us? I think Maine and all of the New England States are a bunch of LIBERALS,,,,,,,

Why I would like someone to tell me why there are so many Liberals in New England,,, little Johny has 2 moms but no father? No dad to go hunting and fishing with,, to be together GOD HELP MAINE AND THE REST OF THE NEW ENGLAND STATES,, DRC

Correction----The Declaration of Independence. We can't put that ahead of the Bible either !!

Looks like someone (Perley) got caught using two different sign on names....need to remember this things...must be that eye problem, who would have thunk it...another troll amongst us!! Crazy...LMAO

Eastmainer; check your history book, Abraham Lincoln didn't craft the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson did. He also was the first to profess RELIGIOUS FREEDOM...hmmm, what a concept. Isn't religion a belief? an opinion? for you, for me, for anyone? And you ask Shouldn't we go by the Holy Bible? Well you go for it if that's how you want to live your life. That 'belief' shouldn't be forced upon all of us because some of us in American lead their lived by other guidance...it's called religious freedom, check your history book again...it's one of our 5 personal freedoms GUARANTEED by our First Amendment...also crafted by men such as Jefferson, Madison, and John Jay. Lincoln was a hundred years later; he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves.

drc480, you need to go live in Alabama, Mississippi or the deep south in general; you'll fit in just fine.

Why is it so hard to see that this issue is moving towards acceptance by the mainstream public. I see attacks from both ends, people who rabidly support it and those who spread fear and hate and would deny it. The reality falls in the middle, right where the people of maine are standing. If you take religion out of the debate, it becomes a less toxic debate with more sanity. I give people slack usually and most people, if opposed, should be allowed their feelings of opposition. It is only the fear and hate mongers that I so strongly disagree with. Within my own family, I know there is debate about the rights of gay couples to wed but it doesn't stop us from loving each other. I look forward to a debate based on facts, not fear and hate, not ignorance and prejudice, a debate based on law and not on religious beliefs. I believe that that debate will allow gay marriage as not allowing it is not allowing equal treatment under the law. Let's see who gets there first, Maine or New York.....peace

Hard to imagine someone else "claiming" to be you isn't it...rather pathetic really...

Let em get married. WHy shouldn't they be as miserable as us.

AVani112, now THAT is funny.

Yep, that was a good one AVani112!

drc480, who are you to tell me what I am and what I am not. I was raised a Catholic and still consider myself one. However, as I've aged, I've learned a few things through LIVING and Experiencing life. And, I voted for Obama...and, I am pro-choice, and I think whoever wants

to get married has that right. Did you get married? (poor soul who was on the receiving end of

that one)...and lastly, I don't need to look in the mirror and ask God anything before I go to church. So, as my mother would say, "Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!" And while you're at it, have a very wonderful day :) Peace, love, and forgiveness.

anne I was wondering when you would come to the idiots rescue....not overly impressive though I figured out the profile last night but thanks for the try....

Pabmainer if you figured it out why did you make your 10:05 comment?

Just keeping the old ball rolling....still does not answer why two or three of Perley's posts just before my 8:23 post were removed.....spouting off in his usually obscene manner and he was blaming his imaginary friend DEW and then me and then the world for the post by the kingofnothing from last night....so you must have me and all of my supposed alias' figured out by now right?

Over and over again it is the religious, love thy neighbor, church goers that are all jammed up about homosexuals. Get over yourselves already. The church is supposed to teach love and tolerence not hatred and intolerence. Do you think their are no homosexuals that are Baptist, Catholic, Jewish, or whatever. God made people with imperfections. you are supposed to judge not least ye be judged. Let he who is without sin caste the first stone. Do you think your going to go to heaven by spewing hatred. Not according to anything I was taught.

What are you Sybil?

Even though I do believe in personal freedoms, which make this country great, I cannot support gay marriage. Maybe its because we have this shoved at us every year , year after year. Now the MCLU has jumped on the band wagan of same sex marriage, These people could'nt convict Daffy Duck in traffic court.

Vote NO - How about teaching Math and Science ! ! ! !

Kate124:

I think something got confused there and maybe Mainelyme can explain it. He uses a certain kind of humor sometimes that may not always be understandable (esp if one does not know the references, etc.) As I understand it, Mainelyme (Perley) is in favor of same-sex marriage. As for getting over the "drivel", think he was referring to a lot of the comments (opposed) on this site....

You should ask him directly if you continue to think he is the other poster as well, when that has been stated otherwise.

chersully2000

I really can't be bothered.

Mainelyme

Mainelyme:

I understand.

I want a second handle! Everybody else does. How about, "Touch-hole"? You like it Perley? Would you know it was me?

I think that life is what you make it and if men and women want to have the same sex partner it's there perogative? Enough is enough they have a right to live and do as they please like the rest of us do gay or not. But some will agree and some won't.

Nightwolf1966:

Well stated.

Nightwolf, you are so right, those that support will, those that don't probably never will. How sad but gay people everywhere take heart in statements like yours.....

corninmyturd2,

Maybe this is God's way of saying there are enough humans?

Makes you want to puke. Man that act like women is that sick or what?

Fags, need one thing a deep dark hole in the ground, even that would be to good for the low life.

I have now figured out why there is so much outcry about same sex marriage on here, and have to thank corninmyturd2 (what, corninmyturd1 was taken??) for spelling it out for me (as well as the other half-wits on here).

These morons who are out to "protect marriage" are only doing exactly what comes natural to ENVIOUS people. They are FURIOUS that other people are doing what they want. They are so uneducated -- and probably poor -- they are infinitely jealous of ANY people who do something out of the ordinary.

It has NOTHING to do with religion, it has to do with these simple-minded people being SO covetous of anything...It doesn't matter if they are two women o two men who want to have what is basically a right.

That's why they felt the same way about the first black man as president ("WHY HIM AND NOT ME??" "HE IS UNQUALIFIED [subtext:] 'and I sure as hell am too.'"

They are so insecure that they can't even take outsiders. They don't want "people from away," because that would mean facing the fact that they have barely ever left their hometowns, never seen anything besides their own depressing lives. They can't deal with people having a broader outlook on anything, because they are insecure with themselves. They say "you're not a MAINER YOU DON'T COUNT! GO BACK TO NYC, FLATLANDER!"

These are the same people who claim to speak for God himself, but they are actually speaking for their subconscious.

They are the ones who are COVETOUS, and the REAL SINNERS here.

Additionally, I truly think that 4him has begun taking his fascination of scatology to a new low. His two newest incarnations, I believe, are:

Bingo!!

Insecurity.....can't hack it that a Black man has made so much of his life......if they felt secure within themselves, it wouldn't even matter. They say they are not prejudiced but they give themselves away with their comments.

People who feel good about themselves and their lives do not have the need or desire to put others down with their nasty remarks. This is basic, elemental stuff.

You do not have to SCAT anywhere, of course. It is a free world.

Ciao!

Mister Markko (aka: keeper of the comment section while anne is away)

A revelation for you nummah, you are as big a part of the problem as I am. You're the one promoting deviant behaviour on a public web site. If you don't want to be criticized for it, why don't you change your tune. It's real simple, fall in line and you'll be o.k.

If you continue to promote the degredation of our society, be prepared to take some shi t for it. As long as there are good God fearing people in the state of Maine, people like you will be kept in check.

Understand Skippy??

Good, now let's not blame others for your lack of morals. It's unbecoming of you, and it's not going to pay off in the end for you either.

I do not go around here misspelling "four letter words" in order to circumvent the automated censor system.

I do not make blatant, unprovoked attacks on various groups of people. To get my wrath, like you, they need to deserve it.

I do not blame homosexuals for anything.

I will, however, call you (and all your aliases) out on your driveling, droolingly-stupid comments.

If you were "God fearing," you wouldn't be behaving like this. Your mother would be ashamed.

Or, considering how badly and consistently you behave, she probably wouldn't.

SCAT!! Markko SCAT!!

Are you or are you not a supporter of the deviant homosexual lifestyle??

Do you promote that lifestyle on this publilc forum?

Do you support other people that promote this lifestyle on this forum?

Do you degrade God fearing Christians?

Are you disillusioned with your own self description?

Where are your morals young man? Lost with your soul!!!!!!

Please Markko give me your wrath!!!!

I'm shaking in my boots!

BTW Markko,

FYI. What's wrong with four letter words, are they against the law or something? Coming from a proponent of deviant sexual behaviour your words don't carry much weight.

Capeesh skippy???

bigfoot, while 4-letter words are not against mans laws, there are plenty of bible verses speaking out against using them.

This issue makes real people want to puke. This behavior is not human and gross. We the people need to vote on it not some gay rights group in the state house.

4him2day, you said : "while 4-letter words are not against mans laws, there are plenty of bible verses speaking out against using them"

just curious because I don't remember reading any, but exactly which ones 'speak against it'?

mousehunt: why are you obsessed with the private practices of OTHER people? Are you into vouyerism? Does thinking about OTHER people having sex arouse you?

THIS LIFESTYLE IS WRONG and I can not stand by and let the state go to hell and not say anything frankforter your giving that town a bad name .If you think its alright for this sin to be in the news and trying to wreck our way of life for your sickness you are Wrong.
