Native American Veterans Day created in Maine

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci has signed a bill to establish May 1st of each year as Native American Veterans Day in Maine.

Decorated World War II veteran Charles Shay of Indian Island helped to persuade the Legislature to pass the bill. Shay said American Indians from Maine have served in every war since the American Revolution, and it is time they were honored for their heroism and patriotism.

The governor also conducted a ceremonial bill-signing Friday to name a section of state Route 16 in Kingsbury Plantation the Alton E. Worcester Highway.

The bill honors Worcester, who served 20 years in the Air Force and 27 years as first assessor of Kingfield Plantation. He also worked as a blueberry farmer in the plantation for 28 years.

This is ridiculous! We already have Veteran's Day...which recognizes ALL veterans....

Congratulations Native American Vets !

oboy another paid holiday.

I am a veteran and a native American. When do we get this country back ?

What do you mean get this country back??

I usually stick up for Baldacci but not this time. This is a slap in the face to every woman, black, asian, Irish, French American who fought and or died for this country. The Indians create their own prejudice with BS like this. And poormainiac if you are serious about your comment you need to go get help. This isn't YOUR country it is OUR country.

This good news! Now a tradition should be started to celebrate Native American Veteran's Day like tree planting or something like that.

Lets just buy them all some vodka and see what else we can buy from them..........

If any of them had a job they wouldn't have time to think up all this bulls**t

You might have been born here but I doubt you are a Native American Indian. You must be very envious.

If Kate123 wasn't a troll maybe HE wouldn't have time for this BS! DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!

Kate123, you are a true red-blooded racist. Congratulations on your ignorant remarks. Don't hurt yourself while patting yourself on the back.

Hope that the members of the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot , Maliseet and Mi'kmaq tribes bring these to the attention of the state, the Human Rights Commission and the BDN.

No I'm not a racist I just think whats fair is fair. There is a Veterans Day which includes all VETERANS. It doesn't exclude Indians. They have to have a special day, well what about the woman who fought, the black americans, Latinos, Irish French. Poormainic claims they want this country back well I hate to break it to him. They couldn't survive without the taxpayers of this country paying their bills. If my great grandfather sold you our farm for nothing are you going to my family for the rest of eternity, until they are under 1/16 related? Its a load of crap. It happened, its over, get over it.

Don't forget to call the CIA, FBI and Maine State Police....

Kate, Kate, Kate calm down. Glad you finally see the true colors of your Beloved Baldacci though. He's like the wind, he's everywhere and changes directions all the time long as he's in the spot light, when he's wrong though, try to find him. A good example is his beloved Maine Care. Sorry to see that while your slapping yourself in the face you left out another true veteran, the Working White Male. They fought and died to you prejudice, racist piglet!!!

madison I take it from the source it comes.

Oh and Madi last time I looked the Irish, French and a lot of woman are white, you bottom sucking troll

Good Lord...how long do "Native Americans" get to cry because we (not sure who "we" are) took their land???? Am I considered a "Native American" because I was born here? My father was born here. His parents were born here. Doesn't that make ME a "Native American"? I work and pay taxes. I don't get a check from the government. I don't get free medical. I can't send my kids to college for fee. What the he11. Enough is enough. Get over it. None of these "acts" were done to you. Move on.

Thank you sickntired, my sentaments exactly.

Hey Kate123, if you are going to spew your hate and discontent you should at least learn how to spell or I may make assumptions that you are just some ignorant, uneducated racist sitting in your trailer smoking and drinking all day while you make your many uniformed comments. Oops, I guess I just stooped to your level, how's that working for you?

When people keep making the statement "they need to get over it" it makes me laugh, if that is the best you can come up with maybe you need to get over your ignorance!

Fact one, This country was never "discovered" it was invaded.

Fact two. The people living here that we grudgingly call "native " had been stereotyped and maligned, lied too and cheated at every turn, and any that would not "conform" were mercilessly slaughtered, poisoned, or driven from their lands.

Fact three. From my earliest memories Native Americans where called savage redskinned indians. portrayed as murderous drunken heathens with no social values or civilized morals. The tribes of natives living here where anything but that. Take some time and learn from a native the rich history passed down generation to generation. There may not be much written history but what is out there is absolutely stunning and enlightening.

Fact four. For all the atrocities recorded and taught in history classes this country has conviently left out it's own murderous exploits. The trail of deceit, scams and near genocide of the "first citizens" of these lands is there to see if your willing to open your eyes and read.

For anyone to say we no longer owe anything to the survivors and that they should just "get over it" is completely selfish and racist. It is the poorest of excuses and the thinest veil of hate. All to obscure the true past and maintain an ugly oppression that has gone on for far too long.
