$150,000 grant to aid revival of Milo downtown


Milo receives $150,000 CDBG grant for downtown

MILO, Maine — The state Department of Economic and Community Development has awarded Milo a $150,000 grant to make street and building facade improvements to the upper block of Main Street.

The grant, part of an effort to rebuild and revitalize the downtown, was written and submitted by Dr. Kenneth Woodbury, Piscataquis County Economic Development specialist, on behalf of the town.

Milo Town Manager Jeff Gahagan said Tuesday that he was “very pleased” the town received the award. The funds will allow the town to make improvements to spruce up the downtown that was destroyed by an arson fire, he said.

“The grant will add new street and pedestrian lighting, decorative improvements, benches, trees and shrubs and other landscape enhancements,” Woodbury wrote this week in a press release.

Grants will be made available to five downtown businesses to improve their facades with paint, siding, awnings, planters, and signs to provide a more unified appearance in line with the new design scheme for the downtown developed by Civil Engineering Services Inc. of Brewer, according to the release.

Meetings will be arranged with building owners to explain the voluntary program.

In addition to the $150,000, a $350,000 Safe Streets project will improve the street from the Sebec River to the Milo Free Library and town hall, Woodbury said. Another combined grant of $222,300 will add two new parks.

Bid specifications for these projects are being prepared now with construction expected by this summer, according to Woodbury.

Why dont they rebuild a few building and open up shop for the people that cant drive to a job. Parks, cross walk lights, come on. This is not going to make the town generate work for those who cant drive. I know what the down town looks like and it does not need any benches or cross walks. Nobody hangs out by the river where they want to make a park and there isnt enough cars in the town to make a cross walk. And even if people are crossing the road. Any driver up there will most likely stop and let you cross. I bet they will end up making a parking lot where the buildings burned down so people will have a new place to congragate.

Milo will blow this money on weed and 20 inch rims for the police cruiser.
