Police search for thief who left hat at crime scene

CORINTH, Maine — A thief left a blue baseball hat with a distinct teal clover at the scene of a home break-in last month, and police are hoping someone will recognize the hat and turn him in.

The thief or thieves who broke into the Ledge Hill Road home sometime April 8 or April 9 had to move a piece of plywood to get access to the back door, and left the hat behind, Detective John Trask of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

“We’re not talking about rocket scientists,” he said.

More than $15,000 in jewelry and a hand-carved rifle were taken from the home, and the victim’s list of stolen items keeps growing, Trask said.

He said the stolen gun is considered priceless to its owner.

The weapon is a custom-made Mauser .243-caliber rifle that was put together by the victim’s late father, Trask said.

“It’s a piece of art her dad made for her,” he said. “It is very important to her.”

The rifle’s stock is made from blond maple, has a carving of a bear coming out of the woods and is modified with a special trigger. It is topped with a Bausch & Lomb scope, has a leather strap, and its serial number is 9606.

“It’s a one of a kind rifle,” Trask said.

Most of the jewelry is described as Southwestern-style, some with turquoise and others with dancing Kokopelli figures.

“Folks were away from their home and when they came home [on the morning of April 9] they found forced entry had been made through the back,” Trask said. “That’s where we located the baseball hat.”

The hat has been sent to the crime lab for DNA testing, Trask said.

Those who might recognize the hat or who have information about the rifle or home invasion may call Trask at 947-4585, ext. 122.

yeah thats what im saying wheres the pic peace

Maybe they don't have a pic to put online, morons. This is just a free web site the BDN still needs to operate. So putting the pic in the paper and not on the website could be a way to get you to pay for a paper.

I hear people complaining about the BDN all the time, this is one of the better newspaper sites I've seen. Kudos to the BDN for allowing you people to even comment on the site.

if you don't like the BDN then don't read it.

yeah i just luv bein called a moron but i didnt write the caption {if you recognize the hat call the cops} so whos the moron peace

Well i see the comment that says if you have seen the hat also i see a hat wow......

They are presently looking over a four leaf clover that they over looked before (the one on the hat)

Some thieves have been known to leave calling cards at the scene of the crime to put the police on the wrong trail. Could be a hat that belongs to someone that the real crooks want to frame and that person doesn't know their hat is missing yet. Super Sleuth matt29

why wont they send this for a dna

watchitman---- Didn't read the whole article?? States very simply that the hat has been sent to the crime lab for DNA testing.

I've seen dozens of those hats, not exactly a big tell-tale sign
