Lewiston woman, 19, hurt in I-95 rollover

PALMYRA, Maine — Lewiston woman suffered serious hand injuries Monday morning when she fell asleep and lost control of her van on Interstate 95 in Palmyra.

Emily St. Pierre, 19, was saved from more serious injury because she was wearing a seat belt and her 2002 Dodge Cara-van had air bags that deployed, Maine State Trooper Bruce Scott said.

Scott said St. Pierre was driving north around mile marker 156 when she fell asleep and drifted into the median. “She then woke up and steered the van back onto the road but she entered it sideways. Her tires gripped [the pavement] and she rolled over several times,” Scott said. The car landed back on its wheels.

Scott said two motorists witnessed St. Pierre in the median and were able to slow down to avoid striking her van when it re-entered I-95. “She had the road to herself for a while there,” Scott said.

“It certainly made a huge difference,” Scott said, that St. Pierre was wearing her seat belt and the van’s airbags deployed. He was assisted at the scene by Sebasticook Valley Ambulance, and Pittsfield and Newport fire departments.

Alchohol was involved??? Who do you think you are jumping to conclusions? Lets be mature here. First off I garantee that you don't even know this girl so what in your right mind makes it okay for you to say this about her? If speaking you're unwanted, thickheaded opinion on someone elses life is what you get enjoyment with, have fun with that.

I completely agree. Alcohol use cannot be assumed in this case. I happen to personally know this fine young woman, and alcohol had no involvement whatsoever. The situation is extremely upsetting to everyone involved, and for you to jump to the conclusion that alcohol was involved is not only utterly absurd, but also hurtful. So please take your negative thoughts elsewhere. We're all praying for you, Emily.

Well, I'm going to assume the comment about alcohol was removed due to many thumbs down (thank goodness). However, I do want to say that I agree with the other two who have commented on this story. I have known Emily since the day she was born and can assure you that alcohol was not involved. How dare somebody make an assumption like that. Did it ever occur to you that she is a college student driving back from home for her finals and she was likely exhausted as most college students who apply themselves are during finals time. Whoever posted a comment about alcohol should be ashamed of themselves! If you only knew Emily and what she is going through, you would feel horrible for feeling the need to make such a judgement.
