AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill to prohibit recreational vehicles from parking overnight at commercial lots in Maine has been rejected after the sponsor said it would not correct the problem it's meant to address.

The House on Tuesday voted to kill Rep. Anne Perry's bill after the Calais Democrat said it was too broad. Perry also said she's received e-mail from RVers who helped change her mind on the issue.

RVers say they've helped to defeat similar bills in Montana and Nevada.

The legislation was pushed by 275 campgrounds and owners. They said the measure would help local campgrounds and RV parks stay in business and allow the state to recoup money lost in state lodging taxes.

Yippee. Glad they came to their senses! First

A weekend at the Wal*Mart! How can it get any better than that?

campground owners need to figure ot a way to offer RV a parking option and a camping option.. turning to goverment is not the way to deal with this....that law would hurt the state even more as RV folks would just avoid maine..

well what do you know they found some one in our gov with a brain yup invite tourists into our state and then force tham to pay to sleep in a park in this economy he aint a mooron hes a less on he hasnt got a clue glad he woke up peace

Time to move on and regulate something else to death.

hey outlaw a litttle punctuation would help to make you statement a little more readable but i am not the punctuation police the bdn doesnt charge us by the character so i guess ill just stop typing because it is make less and less sense - maybeforgetthespacestooandreallyfityourpointinlessspacehaveareallygreatafternoonoutlaw

They should requlate jogging. Makes too much co2, adds to global warming.

Damn good move. Now what you need is a formula to end the paradigm of Campgrounds charging just a s much if not greater than the hotel industry. The cost they charge Tenters is outrageous in terms of overhead verses service. Someone setting up a tent has very little utility use and still pays basically the cost of a hotel.

I still think the Greed needs addressing. Check out the Brownville Junction and Katahdin area. Now they know how to step out of the box. A unique business up there even has live rock concerts. Change the way you do business. The junction General store in Brownville is onto something good!

And no, I don't work for them, but i did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Between this and things like the failed attempt to tax plastic bags, you can get a pretty good sense of how seriously Augusta is currently taking things like..... oh, I don't know........ rising unemployment, huge budget gaps, businesses closing down left and right.

But let's spend time crafting bills on whether someone can RV in a Wal-Mart parking lot. As if Wal-Mart isn't more than capable of addressing that issue on their own.

Thank goodness the House voted to kill the bill... Most times we only need a few hours rest...

Campgrounds want to charge more than $20.00 for nothing... If it passed, I would start a boycott

of Maine Campgrounds...

Note that the Campground owners were pushing this, not Augusta, and the Bill's sponsor saw the light and withdrew it. As RV campers, we've often used WalMart lots when we're trying to make time and need something close to whatever highway we're using. We'll drive 'till late and be up and on the way early. Stay for more than one night? No way! Camprgrounds aren't always that handy for those kind of stops. If they are handy, a two-tier price as suggested above would help.

The Bangor WalMart lot often has RVs in, mornings and evenings at least, this time of year. They seem to be mostly snowbirds going to and from down South, and Canadian shoppers, in for a day and night. The shoppers pump a sizeable amount of money into the local economy so a good deal for all.

yeah you too man-peace

Had this been requested by the commercial lot owners I could have seen going with this. But this is an industry (RV campgrounds) asking government to push business their way. If you can't do it on your own, don't force it.

I want to sell pot so I will call my representative and see if they will make it illegal to buy it from out of staters. You retards in the state house have got to go!

Tax Politicians double.

If I'm not mistaken, Wal-Mart actually encourages RV's to stay overnight in their parking lots.

Pretty typical politics. Industry reps cry baby tears when an ounce of government regulation affects them but hesitate not for a moment to use big bad socialist government to limit competition.

Walmart allows RV types to park all over the country. Good for business, good for the RV types. Not everyone has the time to find a park late at night, etc. Also, adjoining businesses benefit from the RVs shoppers, not just Walmart.

Legislation like this really shows how lawmakers are out of touch with real life. Better yet, out of touch of what Mainers want or think.

You know if this nut did a little research before submitting bills, she wouldn't have to eat so much crow.

"Time to move on and regulate something else to death."

Sad but true, Beelzebubba!

This result is some good news, but when will our so-called state leaders deal with our largest problems? The terrible staff management and excessive spending habits must be resolved, but that would require a backbone. It's time for deep cuts!

What kind of loser is this windbag Anne Perry? She proposes a bill that benefits a personal friend's business interests at the expense of the rest of the population, and has the stones to say that the tone of some of the objections were nasty enough to almost make her dig her heels in? Bet your last dollar that the gay marriage issue is being pushed through the same way. People's wishes be damned. Come on Calais, wake up and vote this self serving blowhard out. Term limits, baby!

this idea is a great example of that political malady known as rectocranial inversion...most elected folks progress to a terminal case of it quickly after they realize how wonderful feeding out of the public trough can be.

just another stupid idea and law we don't need. If walmart and others want campers on there lot's than its up to them not the state

About time the legislature made a smart decision. I have renewed hope!

Maybe these RV campgrounds should offer better lots? lower rates? But people arent CAMPING at walmart... What is an overnight park? What if they are driving to an actual RV park but are tired and need to rest because its late at night? There are check in times and check out times. No different than sleeping in a car in a parking lot. WOW. Glad they didnt pass this one.

And i have slept in MANY parking lots for a couple hours here or there because i've caught myself falling asleep at the wheel. Hell, in a car even.

I would think the State would be happy Walmart IS allowing these folks to get off the road for a few hours and allowed to get some rest!!!!

Driving a big rig is stressful enough. Think of all the lives..yes...Walmart maybe actually saving by letting these folks rest!! I can assure you,

these folks with RV's are not trying to screw anyone out of a few bucks, they have better things to do!!! "IT'S A SAFETY issue....PEROID!!!!!!

I've been logging on to this BGD lately and "I CAN'T BELIEVE SOME OF THE ISSUES these Politicians KEEP TRYING TO PASS.....UNBELIEVEABL!!"

I think if MOST have to actually work for a living "THEY WOULD STARVE!!!!!!!!" Isn't MAINE POVERTY STRICKEN enough already!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!

I think the problem is the people that are not just staying one night but the ones that are actually living there full time. I don't really care either way I guess but at the wal mart near me there are actually people living there. They just move the camper around just enough so the casual observer doesn't notice. What they do with the waste water etc, I don't know. I feel badly because at least one of them has school age kids that aren't going to school. I guess they need a place to go so I mind my own business. I hate wal mart but it looks like they are helping out some people in need and not just people traveling thru.

It's not about protecting campground owners, it's not about collecting tax revenue, It's about

Wonder how many more fools like Perry are in state goverment..........a scary thought eh? Maine needs all the business it can get and this idiot throws up the no welcome sign?

It's not about protecting campground owners; It's not about collecting tax revenue; It's about PROTECTING FREEDOM THAT SO MANY HAVE DIED FOR, that's the part of their jobs most politicians can't seem to grasp. People are capable of making their own choices without the state's help.

Maybe if Agusta would stop worrying about how to tax something else totwally stupid like kayaks, plastic bags, and stuff like that, maybe they should think of things to help out the state. I guess that makes to much sence for Baldachi and his goons. Why dont we put a tax on being governor. Put a tax on him using the baline house and just tax him in general. I think maine is going outta control with taxes. thats why there is no buisness in maine to many damn taxes

How about rv can't park at walmart and campgrounds can't sell what walmart sells.

For every camper at Wal-Mart the state is loosing that 7% they could add to the revenue. That is why the campground owners got someone to draw a bill up on this. State makes money as well as the Campgrounds.

Anne Perry stated that she received some nasty emails regarding her moronic idea...so many that she considered voting for the measure even though it would CLEARLY hurt the Maine economy. Let me get this straight...Anne Perry is so petty, childish, and out of touch with the people of Maine that she would seriously voting for a bill which would hurt the Maine economy just because her feelings were hurt? You know what? Those letters were right...Anne Perry is a moron.

That 7% for a one night stay is chump change compared with what the state would lose if that had become law. My guess is that these RV's END up in somebodys campground later on. How much money would the state lose if RV'rs said the hell with you Maine?? New Hampshire considers Maine their best friend, why not, we keep sending business their way.

Wal Mart is the BEST place to go camping because you never have to worry about forgetting anything, and it's free!! More money to spend at area attractions!

I am tickled that lawmakers are concerned with campers in a parking lot, yet if someone hits you in a parking lot, parks illegally half the time the cops don't want to do anything about that, so I wonder who they planned on enforcing this law as well if it did pass. Now we can go back to more lame bills such as banning words.

Ya lets make Maine just a little bit more UNFRIENDLY They camp out in Walmarts parking lot but they are spending their money here in Maine if Walmart or any other retail lot does not want them there let then tell them to leave not the police under the dirction of some campground owners

I think it should be left up to the Business owners, not the state. If the state was to ban it wouldn't walmart be able to allow it anyways? Or is walmart controlled by the state (which its in) If they want to allow it, more power to them. If they are getting all their products from chinkville the least they can do is allow campers in the parking lot.

piper2 RE: 3:02-- That is sad for those people. But just think, if this had passed, those people would be hard pressed to find another place to go. The waste would concern me too. But at least they have a place to call 'home' rather than a shelter....

I like camping at Walmarts because I can dump my holding tank on the tar and noone cares. I can also leave my garbage bag in the parking lot when I leave. Where eles can you do that? No one bothers me no mater what I do. Its grat!!.
