Man from northern Maine wounded in shooting

By The Associated Press

WEST PARIS, Maine — Officials are investigating an apparent accidental shooting that sent a 29-year-old man to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police say Lael Scott was taken to Central Maine Medical Center after being shot at about 1 p.m. Sunday at a home in West Paris where he had been staying in recent weeks.

Sgt. Tim Holland of the Oxford County Sheriff's Office told the Sun Journal of Lewiston that 67-year-old Ernest Wesley was cleaning the gun when it apparently went off. Officials say Scott is originally from northern Maine and had been staying with Wesley and his wife.

A hospital nursing supervisor on Monday declined to release any information on Scott's condition.

I will never understand why you would clean a loaded gun...you hear about it happening all the time. "He was cleaning the gun and it went off" I guess since I have never cleaned one I don't understand..... Hope he is ok!!!

how do you clean a gun with a bullet in the chamber?

LOL! You don;t clean a gun with ab ullet in a chamber. You fail to unload it and pull the trigger to take tension off the mechanism...BOOM. That is the way it goes. Poor and unsafe practices are the culprit.

Unbelievable! Careless. Reckless. The man should not be allowed to have a gun. Period.

Hahahaha! This is why legislature wants to take our firearms. You cant clean a gun with out clearing the chamber. 1. You have to be able to look down the barrel to see if the damn thing is clean. 2. You have to be able to completely breech the barrel on both sides to get everything out of it. 3. The first thing EVERYONE should do when handleing a gun is break the action and clear the chamber. GUN SAFETY 101. Dumb ASS

Oh come now, he was just polishing the outside parts of the gun. But even so; his daddy should have told him that the first thing you do when you pick up a gun is check to see it it is loaded.

And NEVER point at anything you don't intend to shoot. What an idiot.

This is a sad story. All too often we hear about this reckless behavior. The worst part about this story and many like it is, its always some nobody that doesn't deserve it. If this thing has to take place, I wish for once someone who deserves to be shot in the chest would make the headlines. "BREAKING NEWS"..." Governor shoots self in the head while cleaning his rifle..seems he was daydreaming about more ways to tax us and forgot to unload rifle". Or Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi shoots self in the foot while talking out her ass"...these are the kind of headlines I wanna see from now on. I wish this young man the best and hope him a speedy recovery.

RussHermon, I totally agree with you! I am looking forward to reading those same headlines. Also, good luck to Mr. Scott, and I hope he has a complete recovery.

RussHermon,

NICE!

Thanks.

this is not why the government wants to enforce gun control. not even close. this is no more than some idiot falling down the stairs or running over his foot with a lawn mower. could have been totally prevented. the government has other reasons to take our guns away. and i'm waiting till they come for mine..... they'll be hard pressed to find them all....
