PITTSFIELD, Maine — The regular council meeting was tabled Tuesday night because of a lack of a quorum. When the councilors gathered Wednesday night, it was for a speedy, abbreviated agenda.

Business — including authorizing a $73,000 loan for water system improvements and spending $60,165 in grant funds for a wind turbine — was conducted in less than a half-hour.

Deputy Mayor Gary Jordan conducted the meeting. Both Mayor Tim Nichols and Councilor Donna Chale are out of state.

The council approved a Maine Municipal Bond Bank agreement to cover the cost of a $103,000 water pump for the Pittsfield Water Works at the Peltoma Avenue pumping station. Town Manager Kathryn Ruth said $73,000 will be borrowed at zero percent interest, while the $30,000 principal match will be forgiven through the use of federal stimulus funds.

The turbine project will be located at the Pittsfield Transfer Station and Recycling Center, which is the town’s greatest electrical user. The turbine, tower and assembly will be provided by Evolo Energy Systems of Newport. The project is completely funded through a state economic development grant.

In other business, the council:

ä Approved the June 17 school referendum and appointed wardens for the polls.

ä Proclaimed May 2009 as Foster Care Awareness Month in Pittsfield.

ä Approved leasing a parcel at the Pittsfield Municipal Airport to Robert Hart of Spirit Aviation.

ä Approved an agreement with the Senior Community Service Employment Program, which provides employment advice and job searches for people over age 55. Pittsfield will host a remote site for this program.
