Slew of applicants seeks Milo police chief post

MILO, Maine — Selectmen learned last week that more than 25 people applied for the Milo police chief job. Screening of those candidates is expected to begin soon.

The board voted Tuesday to add Dover-Foxcroft Police Chief Dennis Dyer and Piscataquis County Emergency Management Agency director Tom Iverson Jr., who was previously in law enforcement, to the local selection committee to screen the applications.

While town officials are moving ahead with plans to fill the position, Town Manager Jeff Gahagan said the board also will review alternatives to operating a local police department, such as contracting with the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.

“We will continue on with the selection process, and we’re also going to discuss alternatives to the Police Department, whatever that might be, regional coverage, sheriff’s coverage, or continuing on as we always have been,” Gahagan said.

Sheriff John Goggin submitted a proposal to the town for the department’s services that would provide three deputies to serve the community.

Selectmen also heard from a Penquis Valley High School student who hopes to construct a skate park in the community.

This was the second time Bryant Lugo appeared before selectmen about the project and this time he came with a couple of grant applications, according to Gahagan.

Selectmen listened to his presentation and encouraged Lugo to meet with the town’s recreation committee. Lugo believed the park would be used by up to 20 local teenagers.

“He’s pretty persistent about it. It’s encouraging to see young people get involved in the process,” Gahagan said.

As hoped, Ridgewood Maine Hydro Partners of Delaware has offered to donate a small plot of land where the dam is located so the town can use the land as part of its park project. The firm will keep its rights to the utility but will transfer the land to the town, Gahagan said.

GO WITH THE COUNTY WE ARE ALREADY SUPPORTING THE JAIL AND DISPATCH SERVICE AND THE COST OF TRAINING NEW OFFICERS IN THE FUTURE.

purgatory-on-harlow It appears you should have chewed your tongue on the comment pages of other issues in todays paper as well.

wow Juddy53 are you stalking purgatory or something...every article i read and see his comments i see some response back to him..

This could come back later and bite us in th a$$ when they tell us next year that that they need more money. What will it cost us to restart a police dept and buy new equipment and hire all new people? And all the part time people will lose there jobs. It could also take us up to an hour to get a cop when we need one. Something stinks here and i would like to see everyone show up for this dog and pony show that they are about sell us.

brokenwife2, they arent going to listen. All they look at is the money they think they will be saving. They never look at that cost down the road. Like I said before, they are paving a road they never ever dreamed could exist. The best deal for Milo and Milo PD would be to hire someone from the trenches. NOT an entrenched armchair administrator. They need to only look at the applicants that have had very recent actual down to earth police work. These are the ones that WANT to be a cop. NOT a police administrator. Milo needs a police cheif that will walk a beat and answer calls. Not PASS the buck to another cop. But....we shall see. Look, why would anyone with a heavy college background apply to a small town like Milo?

The answer is so easy. Its called R O A D "Retired on Active Duty". The town and its manager are going about it all wrong. The elite board is just going to pick someone like them only not as smart. They want to maintain the superior feeling they have now. Milo citizens, stand up. You dont have to take this baloney! Let the people decide! Let the people decide! Fat chance. Good Luck Milo, your going to need it.

Who says the BDN isn't educational?

Today I learned the definition of "Slew", that it's more than 25 people?

lets pick a new chief and get on with the program. Anyone would be better at it than to have that little power hungry Dave Henderson running the show. The talk around town is that he's out trying to get people to vote for the sheriff to take over the dept. He's not looking out for the people of Milo but rather for himself. If the sheriff takes over then Mr. Henderson stands to gain. But 4 or 5 men and woman will lose there jobs and Henderson gains. Someone needs to knock the wheels out from under him.

To Broken wife::: Be careful what you ask for- you may get it. You said ANYBODY would be better as Chief than Henderson. I can think of quite a few candidates that WOULD be worse. My point here is not about officer Henderson, but rather I am trying to say- Be careful painting with such a big brush that it covers everything.. What is going on in the time that a decision is being made ( or not ) as to which way to go with the Police Dept.ie either go with the County or stay local, I would say this: The officers on the street are 3 . 2 of which are not maine State Police Academy graduates. They are reserve

officers with a basic 100 hour course which allows them to be out there. They both have very little ( if any ) real street experience. One of them is a young woman. I hope she stays safe. The other guy seems to be very unsure of himself. And then of course there is officer Henderson, who has been academy trained and appears to be very confident. I would say that all of them should have a well trained experienced Sergeant to oversee their activities for a year at least.

I prefer the county option. I see small town cops all the time, just sitting, or playing speed trap, just passing the time. The county and state troopers seem to have a lot less time on their hands to just sit and wait for trouble. If the sheriff can guarantee adequate coverage, it takes a lot of hassle off the shoulders of the town.

Option #1 Keep the milo police dept and get a cop when you need one in 3 or 4 minutes. Or option # 2 call the county and get a cop in about 45 minutes to an hour it they can free one up. Now if someone was braking into my home or business or if you are being assaulted who would would you want to call. When we have trouble at the high school and your chils is being assaulted do you want to wait for the county to show up. This thing is all about more money for the county and not about service for you. Think about it.
