Maine animal fighting bill killed

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill to make it a crime in Maine to posses animal fighting equipment has been killed.

The House of Representatives voted Tuesday against the measure, which had previously received a favorable Senate vote.

As amended by the Senate, the bill would have made possession of a dog-fighting pit a crime.

Opponents of the bill said there’s no evidence of dog fighting in Maine and that a law is not needed.

Supporters said anecdotal reports of dog fighting justify pre-emptive action by the Legislature.

We are going to tax dog food but we can't protect them.... hmmmm

Some of the people we sent to Augusta must be wearing blinders or are just plain fool's.

Why vote this down??? That is just crazy. I would llike to see who individually voted for what. SHAMEFUL!! Even if there is no evidence that Mainer's are participating in dog fighting...so what; this is a great law to have on the books. I want this billl to get another chance....call your representitives people!!!

"Opponents of the bill said there’s no evidence of dog fighting in Maine and that a law is not needed.".......This is about the most stupid comment I have ever read.....

I am all for stronger laws against animal fighting. But "fighting paraphernalia" is a very gray term and should be used carefully. A fighting pit obviously has the sole purpose of fighting equipment. But often treadmills are lumped into the same category even though responsible pet owners use them as well. It's happened in other states and caused problems with owners who have no intention of fighting their dogs. And it's not just treadmills, there are other items that are enjoyed by many breeds for exercise that get labeled as fighting equipment.

As expected from this corrupt incompetent assembly. Now, if a sealth dog fighting organization is discovered, there is no law to charge them nor extract fines. Go figure.

Seriously? They see no evidence of it because they have never been further north then augusta. Ignorant.
