MONTPELIER, Vt. — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is taking its campaign against Canadian seal harvesting to America, urging consumers to boycott Canadian-made maple syrup.

Three PETA activists — one dressed as a baby seal — campaigned outside the Statehouse in Montpelier on Tuesday, smashing a likeness of a maple syrup bottle until it squirted red “blood” — it was really theatrical makeup — onto the sidewalk.

Passersby didn’t need much coaxing, though. Nineteen-year-old Anna Macijeski of Northfield, said she never buys Canadian maple syrup anyway.

Campaign coordinator Jena Hunt says similar demonstrations are planned this week at state capitals in Maine and New York.

I hate Peta... just wanted to put it in print. YUP... HATE THEM. Boy, I feel better.

PETA is a fraud. They are not interested in the animals, only your money.

Has anybody ever had seal meat? Mmmm, tasty. PETA=People Eating Tasty Animals

What do Canadians and Tupperware have in common?

Both like a tight seal.

There is nothing better on freshly beaten seal than a little maple syrup.....MMMMMMMM....

You have to admit ...it's a cute little seal costume worn by that "protesting PETA person".... a "ppp"....(protesting peta person)...sort of like Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers......

OMG, what rediculous cause will people fight for next? Personally, me & the rest of us members of MALVA (Mainers Against Liberal Vermont Activists) are boycotting Vermont maple syrup.

After I purchase a cuddly seal fur coat for my wife, maple syrup won't be allowed in the house. It's too hard to wash the stick nasty goop out of the fur. I treat stuff from Vermont as if it came from China. I don't buy anything from there.

What the hell do seals and maple syrup have in common, You PETA wackos should get a life. Try some moosemeat and fiddleheads , and a side dish of brooktrout. YUMMIE!

The PETA people are very informative.

Before reading this enlightening article, I didn't know that baby seals were clubbed with maple syrup bottles.

Well, Now I Know !

So I guess seals should stay away from the House of Pancakes if they know what's good for them?

.

I wonder if the good folks at PETA realize that most of the Canadian maple syrup is imported in bulk. It is then mixed with Vertmont & NY maple syrup and then put up in retail packages. Labeling laws do not require the indication of the imported portion, which is significant.

By the way, I have had seal meat, fishy pot roast, but if it keeps you alive, who cares.

The best kept secret in America is behind the doors of the meat packing facilities.. well almost.. except for large cement factory pork enclosures and mass feedlot productions. Once glance and you would barf forever. There is a reason that these are secured by private guards from public observation, absolutely no visitation and no cameras. Beef is not raised on grasslands but on a dung hills. Pork in stinking packed steel cages piled high. Same for chickens. Antibiotics keep them standing until they reach slaughter houses and processed by immigrant labor.

Never had seal and can't really make the connection other than the fact that it's harvested in the same country. PETA's not the most rational bunch around either. Story out a couple years ago about PETA's rescuing unwanted pets kinda turned on them when they were convicted for killing those pets and dumping them in the dumpster behind the virginia hq's.

Eat more wild game. it's better for you. Living in Georgia now. 12 deer, 3 turkey, unlimited wild boar per year. Not much need to buy "meat" from the stores.

.

Coolfusion, I thought the article was about PETA protesting roast seal basted with a maple syrup glaze?

.

JJhampden: It was about PETA and seals until the bloggers decided to attack PETA. The only organization in the world that is protecting your protein source and your general health by insisting on humain treatment of domestic and farm animals. The USDA sold out to the agro businesses long ago. Wittness the recent breakout of the swine flu epidemic that is now believed to have initiated at a putrid mass hog production facillity in Mexico.

I do not know how much Canadian maple syrup is sold in the US but a couple of weeks ago while traveling down south, we found that the Cracker Barrel restaurants serve little individual bottles of syrup made in Vermont....I don't know if asking people to boycott Canadian syrup is even worth the effort.....

PETA, put your hard work into abused children and stop the BS
