Baldacci signs $5.8 billion Maine budget

By The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci has signed a $5.8 billion state budget, which he described as “hard” but “responsible.”

The Democratic governor Thursday afternoon signed the spending package as leaders of both parties and members of the Appropriations Committee looked on. The budget won final approval by overwhelming legislative majorities on Wednesday.

Baldacci praised lawmakers’ willingness to work together during a difficult process. He said the budget cuts services many Mainers have come to expect. But he said it also makes structural changes that will help state government to operate within its means in the future.

Baldacci said the budget protects Maine’s most vulnerable citizens.

The budget covers the fiscal years starting July 1, plus the remainder of 2009.

Baldacci said the budget protects Maine’s most vulnerable citizens. HA, HA,HA......NOT! I think Maine's most vulnerable citizens are TAXPAYERS! What are you doing to help us! Somewhat agree with the first comment......I hate THE POLITICS OF THIS STATE.

If the morons of this state were as good as they think they we the people of Maine would be in a better position and would't be cutting our state budget we would have a surplus. Think if we could all be able to pay eletricity so cheap we could heat our homes and have this product as our main source of energy. We have mountain for windmill. We many miles of coastal water where we can have tide energy. We have all kinds of rivers where we could have water tubines. If we could develop all these resources along with a modern eletrical grid we could then sell our electricty so cheap to manufactures putting people back to work thus greating a larger income tax base. Less people on welfare and unemployment keeping our youth in our state. THINK ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES!!!!!!!! But I don't think that the morons will every try on working on a project of this dimension. It's much easier to ply withthe taxes or some how nickle and dime every one else working or in this catagory.

I agree harley, I'm not a scientist but it seems like we do have opportunities.....Been out fishing around Lubec, Campobello and Eastport and am amazed with the tidal power! Funny BDN took off the first comment.........

The only way to cut welfare is to CUT it.
