Maine victim’s family sues alleged murderer

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — The family of an 18-year-old Portland murder victim has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the alleged killer and is seeking a court order that would essentially freeze his assets.

The Portland Press Herald said the suit by the family of Zoe Sarnacki was filed Wednesday in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Sarnacki’s body was found on Memorial Day in the apartment of 27-year-old Chad Gurney, who’s accused of killing her and setting fire to the dwelling.

The family’s lawyer, Dan Lilley said in the suit that Gurney has been living off a personal injury settlement valued at more than $1 million. The suit asks that a judge attach up to $1.5 million of his assets to prevent him from diverting or concealing funds.

You can sue your loved one's killer?? Wow...the things I learn from BDN...

This place is just a wealth of information...some useful and some not! (that dosen't sound too strange does it?)

ha ha nope! :)

go for it, he won't need any money in hell anyway

So sick to benefit financially off the MURDER of your loved one. There's no use in suing someone who isn't wealthy but obviously he was. I can't imagine even wanting something from someone sick enough to do what he did to her. Not like it's going to do her any good.

And one more thing.........why you shouldn't date someone because they have money. Especially when they got it from a lawsuit.

I think the family is suing to get money that otherwise could pay for fancy defense.

I don't think it is uncommon to file a civil suit against your loved ones killer. They are asking the judge to freeze this guys assets in case they choose to file suit in the future. I am sure if they had the choice of money or their daughter, they would choose their daughter. This also prevents him from using all this money to hire a fancy defense lawyer and get away with murder! Besides--a million dollars doesn't go all that far now a days!

If someone took my son's life, I don't think that I could mentally handle a lawsuit to get their money. Which is why after reading this yesterday I asked several of my closest friends to make sure IF something as horrable as this ever happened in my family to help me soak the SOBs for ALL they are worth, and they asked the same of me. Murders should not be able to keep ANYTHING that they have. Not even their own life. I hope this family gets all that they want and I hope that the SOB rots FOREVER.

This happens all the time...don't you remember the Brown family suing OJ and winning in a civil law suit, even after he was found innocent of murder. People sue doctors and pharmacies for wrongful death too. Don't be too quick to judge the family, I am sure that they have their reasons, and I am sure that no matter how much money they get they would give it all back plus everything else that they have to have this poor girl back. Opinionated, how do you not know that they are suing this guy and using the money to sponsor a program that would educate young people on how to prevent this sort of thing? Or maybe it is for a scholarship or other charity in Zoe's name? Maybe you should think about what you say before you say it...I hope that you are never put in this situation. And how do you know she dated him for money? And why should you not date someone for money? That comment made no sense whatsoever.

user5225 is right on the money! Sometimes people here make such bizarre remarks - as though they're never read an intelligent article or news story in their lives. One has to worry about what they do read or watch on TV.

People do what they need to do for their own reasons. Quite frankly, if this is what they feel they need to do, that's their business. They aren't doing it to see what kind of reaction they will get from people. Suing someone for a wrongful death isn't as bad as actually murdering someone.
