BREWER, Maine — Nearly 1,500 residents lost power on Friday afternoon and police closed South Main Street for about four hours after a two-vehicle collision in front of Save-A-Lot broke a utility pole.

A White Ford pickup was hit by a Toyota Prius about 2:30 p.m. and the truck was pushed into the pole, snapping it, Sgt. Rich Smith said Friday night.

The driver of the car fled the scene, he said. Police were still searching for the vehicle and its driver Friday night.

The driver of the truck was not seriously injured, he said.

Nearly 1,500 customers lost power when the pole went down, according to a statement from Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. Businesses that lost power included the Save-A-Lot and the Muddy Rudder restaurant. By 6 p.m. the number of affected customers had been cut to around 300 and by 9 p.m. power had been restored to all.

Phone and cable lines carried by the utility pole also were damaged, Smith said.

Police diverted traffic while work crews from Bangor Hydro and FairPoint repaired the damage. The road reopened at around 6:30 p.m.

Anyone with information about the crash should call Brewer Police Department at 989-7003.

Larry T thanks for the updated story and the pics. Thankfully nobody was seriously injured.

I dont think school street has ever seen that kind of traffic! We sat there for about 30 minutes to get out onto Wilson street. That was fun....Not! Love the convertible however.

I too, was caught up in the traffic mess. Perhaps the Bangor Police should have been called over to assist with the traffic. Certainly, more traffic control was needed. It was hideous, frankly. Larry T. Doughty, South Brewer
