BANGOR, Maine — The sunshine, music, food and fashion were like a magnet Saturday, drawing people from all over the region to downtown for the second annual West Market Festival.

The free event, organized by Bangor residents John Gillis and Chas Bruns, brought together 21 local and regional bands and local vendors, and was headlined by the eight-piece funk-rock powerhouse Rustic Overtones.

“It’s not quite as good as the folk festival, but it’s not bad,” Hampden resident John MacLeod said while enjoying a barbecue sandwich in the center of Merchants Plaza, which was closed off for vendors.

Several of the performers were Bangor-based, including the Irish rock band the Barstuards, which also performed last year, lead singer Andrew Koncinsky said just after getting off the West Market Square stage.

Last year’s performance “was almost our first gig,” he said. “Last year, we didn’t know how we were going to fill up half an hour. This year, we had to cut it down from three hours.”

Onstage with Koncinsky were Gary Collins, Connor Oyster, Brian Oyster and Justus McGee. Koncinsky said this year’s event “seems like two to three times the size.”

With twice as many as bands and two stages, there was twice the fun, said Krystle Sisco, who brought her 3-year-old daughter, Alyx Frazell, to the festival.

“We came last year and it’s great,” she said of this year’s event. “There was a lot more awareness [of the festival]. We never have this kind of stuff in Bangor. It’s kind of exciting.”

While six of the nine bands that played on the West Market Square stage were performing, area clothing shops provided fashion shows on a wooden walkway that extended from the stage out into the crowd.

GapKids, American Retro, Bella Luna, Hybrid Couture, Charlotte Russe and The Gap had models on the catwalk throughout the day.

On the Pickering Square stage, 11 acts, which included bands, cloggers and solo artists, performed.

Brewer residents Allison Bankston and Gaylen Smith brought along a mat to sit on as they listened to Payson Nichols play guitar and sing on the Pickering Square stage.

“He’s performing his own music,” Bankston said. “He’s done a few covers, but most of it is his own.”

Nichols also performs with Smith and others in an Irish band called the Galley Rats that performs locally, Bankston said.

While folks enjoyed the music, local businesses also fared well. The Whig & Courier Pub set up an outdoor bar and expanded its outdoor seating area, which seemed to be filled to capacity during most of the daylong festival.

Across the square, Paddy Murphy’s also was packed and had its upstairs bar open. People could be seen looking out windows to get a view of the crowd and performers.

The Bahaar Restaurant served Pakistani food along the closed Merchants Plaza, and even Java Joe’s Cafe up on Central Street enjoyed increased traffic, owners Maddie and Steve Willey said.

“[The festival] brings a lot of people downtown, especially young people, which is good,” Steve Willey said.

The festival ended with Portland-based Rustic Overtones playing to a crowd that packed Broad Street. The band started at around 6:30 p.m. with a song titled “Oxygen,” which got the crowd swaying with the music, and ended just after 8 p.m. with an encore performance.

While mostly young people gathered in front of the stage, lining the street were families with young children and babies, and older people, some in wheelchairs. Intermingled in the crowd were several dogs, small and large, one of which sat on the stage for a while.

The eight-hour festival was a perfect way to get out and enjoy the sunshine, Bankston said.

“It’s kind of a kickoff of summer,” she said.

Good for Bangor

God knows it needs a few laughs

Is that a picture of men wearing green skirts

or women wearing men's black hats?

Funky just the same!

Anything that brings people into the downtown where they just might spend a few dollars is good. Maybe they will return later and spend additional dollars in the local merchants.

I agree with what JD2008 wrote above. I like to see more activity downtown (productive) and vibrancy. It is definitely a good thing.

What a bunch of clowns. Bangor is getting to be the Gay Capital of New England. Boston is bad, but Bangor is not far behind and the sad part is they are all Liberal clowns.

Thank you drc i was gonna say that back in my comment but i knew someone would comment that it will bring in more money for merchants. What this does is give Ed Barrett a biggger raise.

I was right up front watching the Rustic Overtones. That was the best event that I have ever attended in Bangor. Kudos to the organizers.

Great job Chas and John! This appeals to all ages. I wish you much success, in the future. BRAVO!!

It was a pretty good day but it could have been nicer if Bangor had allowed people who bought a glass of beer to walk around the whole area instead of caging them in like some sort of animal while they drink their beer.

Every time there's a gig downtown .........it's a SUCCESS.....there should be an event every weekend to bring the people out and mingle with each other.

Just look at that one photo of the men cloggers, dress like ladies in the square,, Oh how wonderfull. I still can not figure how Maine got so Liberal?

Same sex marriage, men with skirts on cloggering in the square, what next Maine? And Bangor

Leave it to drc and dkenzie to complain about something bringing people to Bangor.... but when it comes to paying for something else im sure they'll be right there to object. There's no pleasing people like you no matter what. Do us all a favor and stop breathing so the rest of us can enjoy the air you're wasting.

Like i said before it was DELETED.... Those 'men' look like women to me. Unless all the men got boob jobs and have girls hands and legs.

drc480 & dkenzie77....OK, what would YOU like to see to bring tourists, visitors, people with money to the downtown area to spend with the local merchants? Instead of complaining about the event, come up with alternatives to accomplish the same thing.

Yes, you are complaining dkenzie! There's no other wording for it. If you are stupid enough to spend $5 to throw one ball that's your problem, not mine! I think this was a wonderful idea. The state fair is also, just like all the other fairs in Maine. This isn't Portland, Bangor doesn't have the population to support certain ideas like Portland does.

Yes, because a dirty look is enough to ruin the rest of my life. Come on. I would think ANYTHING tasteful and a general crowd pleaser that draws people and their money to town would be well welcomed.

dk77 I find it so interesting that when someone challanges you, you become all defensive and you state "Im just dropping this im done." So drop a "buck" into the bucket and get a sticker, then no one else will bother you.

How about a dance out at BIA? Those runways aren't being used all that much.

Drc- You are obviously not a very bright person. So the president is in Paris, he does get a salary, to do what he wishes with it. I'm sorry Drc, you can't have that twinkie that you bought with your money, theres starving people in this country. That is not liberal. Sorry.

It must be interesting to live in a rectal space -- it's quiet 365 days out of the year, no one can bother you, the foods probably not the best, but at least you don't have to pay for it! The complaints about having events are ridiculous. The fair costs money -- then don't go. You have issues with city managers -- write them, or run against them. But to take out your miserly aggressions on people who enjoy a good time, because it's not *your* idea of a good time, is amusing. I think the efforts to support local businesses, as well as showcase music and art should always be welcome. But that's just me... maybe I'd have a different perspective, one like yours, if I lived with my head up my rear.

Dkenzie, you are something else. You complain about this going on in Bangor, YET

YET you walked downtown and THROUGH it???? Hmmmmmmmm. That makes no sense whatsoever. If you BUY beer there, you have to remain in a certain spot, as with MANY beer gardens and at state fairs.

wow vchapes, first of all i took my duaghter for a walk through there like we do nightly unless its raining second of all, there were several out of tents with beers. just like the folk festival every year there is. Obviously you were just too drunk when you were there to see it, get a clue bud and move on with your life. Your a pathetic loser

So, you do not go to the folk festival but you know that beer is outside the tent...hmmm...when I went last year, you could not get out of the "beer garden" with a cup of beer. They do not sell bottles of beer at the tent so any beer bottles you are seeing are being brought to the folk festival with the person(s) consuming them...but I go back to my original 10:34 post...."Instead of complaining about the event, come up with alternatives to accomplish the same thing."

Well, i wasn't there. But thank you for your concern of my drunkeness. My point was why not walk around? You knew this was going on, it's been all over the TV and everywhere. I'm not the pathetic loser that dragged my daughter through a concert where she got beer spilled on her now am i?

I didnt say i didnt go to folk festival i have attended it yearly once for my daughter to go and have fun. i wont attend it three times No.

I didn't have the opportunity to attend this event on Saturday, however, it is great to see folks from all walks of life coming together to enjoy the day. I say if you don't like it than don't go and than later complain and claim how we shouldn't have so many events. If you end up attending something and stay throw down some loose change and feel good knowing that your few cents help go along way. It's more than a money issue. These kinds of events enriches lives and boost morale and that harmony is priceless.

vchapes----Well pal, I think that I'm just as bright as you are, he does get a salary we all know that, but what gets me is how much does it cost to fly a 747 per hour, what does it cost for the security for him and his family, He has been doing nothing but flying around the world doing nothing but reading

Tele-a-Promp's, I think that you are the stupid one in beliveing that this half moslem is going to do any thing for this country?

At this time, in this country, people are getting laid off from their jobs, going on unemployment, It might be his salary, but he should use his head and hold off

because of what's going on in this country. Only a stupiid Liberal that live's in Maine, the same sex state ,believe's in abortion, voted for this so called president.

His wife hate's the white's and I do not know if you are white or not, but she hate's you to, use you head for something beside's a hatrack.

Well, i didn't vote for Obama. I have no desire to have him as president now or ever. So at least we agree on one thing.

I agree that instead of complaining about what Bangor does, or does not, offer, come up with some other ideas and suggestions then. I had another event that day, but I am sure many people really enjoyed themselves downtown with all the music, food, etc.

The remarks at 2:16 PM have got to be some of the most outrageous and dumb comments I have read here in a while (and that is saying a lot....)

drc480 while I did not vote for the man, he is now our President. He is entitled to the "trappings" of the office and I have no issue with a security detail. It truly doesn't matter who the President is, the security detail is the security detail.

Yesterday, I posted on another article that the President might have returned yesterday on Air Force One, but the First Lady and the children stayed on an extra day to "shop". I feel that sets a very bad example given the times we are in. The cost to bring home the First Family just doubled and yes, the tax payers paid the tab.

I look to a leader to lead by example and set the standard for what we as a country should do. While I think President Obama has succeeded in some cases, this example of leadership has fallen far short.

Now, what is your take on the downtown Bangor events? Agree or disagree?
