People stand outside Brewer High School after a bomb threat Tuesday morning. students were sent home for the day and police checked the building.

BREWER, Maine — Students at Brewer High School were sent home for the day on Tuesday after a bomb threat was found written on an inside wall at about 7:30 a.m. at the school.

Sgt. Arden Jones of the Brewer Police Department said Tuesday morning outside the school that the interior had been thoroughly checked and no bombs were found. A dog lent from Bangor police assisted in the search.

“Everything went smoothly, in terms of evacuating the students,” he said. “Obviously, this is something we have to take seriously.”

The students first were evacuated to Sawyer Arena near the school, then were sent home at about 8:30 a.m., according to Brewer Superintendent Daniel Lee. Parents were notified immediately, many through an automated system that Brewer participates in. Seniors were scheduled to spend most of the day conducting marching practice for this weekend’s graduation.

Lee said this is the first bomb threat at Brewer High School during his four-year tenure, and he hoped it would be the last.

“We sent the students home for the day,” he said. “But, we’re going to make a determination about whether to bring them back for school on a Saturday.”

The other option would be adding a day to the end of the school year.

Sgt. Jones declined to offer any more specifics about the threat because it’s still under investigation. Lee said he hoped whoever was responsible would come forward. Bomb threats carry the potential for felony terrorizing charges.

I am sure that who ever did this had a case of summer fever and wanted a day off...

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I read this article!

It is so sad that student's do not understand the serious nature of this type of action until it is to late. It is not simply a matter of getting a day off from school. The cost to the district is great, and the fear such a threat instills to all those that have to evacuate is REAL, and will not be forgotten in the near future.

Agreed... unfortunately the actions were reinforced.

As other have said already. Just a kid that wanted to start vaction early.

Who would have hid what I wrote?? You can't tell me that it doesn't make sense?! Sorry if I offended someone with honesty :)

Who ever did this could be charged with criminal threatening or terrorizing. Serious stuff.

My sophmore year we had so many bomb scares we had to go to school on Saturdays for about 3 months. It wasn't so much fun after the 2nd or 3rd one. And when they caught the kids they went to jail. This was in the 70's.

wow that is so stupid to do a bomb threat to get the day off. Probably a young punk teenager. I know Bangor had three in what a month period at James Doughty. Then the culprit just comes out of the woods and get susspended for year

brewer high has became incredibly infested with drugs in the past few years...i graduated in 2004 and it was escalating then...it was probably some stoner who got busted and wanted to get back at the school....idiot

It's pretty unlikely that it was a "stoner"....can you really imagine a pothead calling in a bomb threat?

unlikely? altering the imagination could lead to some pretty trippy ideas!! "a bomb threat was found written on an inside wall at the school." it wasn't called in, it was written, so yes i can imagine it being a stoner...and yes this is stereotyping, but i attended beer high school and alot of the punks were stoners! just sayin!

where is beer high school i wanna go to that one lol

calm down usafbangormaine,......"some pretty trippy ideas",..what did you just walk out of a Brady Bunch episode?

>>I knew Brewer was filled with a bunch of low life punks!!

there have been some pretty ridiculous generalizations made about Brewer over the past couple years. granted, this situation doesn't make brewer high look any better..but let's not make immature statements like this one. we don't even know who the culprit was, but even if it was a brewer "stoner", brewer high is not "filled with a bunch of low life punks". how much do you even know about brewer high's population? compare it to other local schools. at least brewer will take the "trash" that john bapst denies. otherwise, yes, brewer high would be just as "stoner-free" as those crusaders across the river.

I love how people that have never been high think pot is a hallucinogenic comparable to LSD....

haha never been high, correct, but i'm glad i can say i haven't, what a great thing to be proud of!

beer high school= brewer without the r and w....its a prank some people pulled in 04' to answer your question

and yes, diana, i did walk out of a brady bunch episode, whatever you say!!! haha

I do have to agree with the person that said Brewer sucks. HAHAHA Ellsworth is much better!

Someone should do us a favor and call one of these in every time the legislature gets together. They are more productive when they aren't in session.

Before you all start saying brewer is a drug school you should probably realize that EVERY school has drinkers, druggies or bad kids. Yes brewer has drugs, but it is also full of bright, motivated kids that want to learn.

I agree soxfan. Every school has their share of troubled kids. Let's not throw Brewer High under the bus just because of the immature actions of one person.

Rut ro someone is upset, but yea i do believe with you soxfan some kids are birght. Bangor High school is full of drugs right now. But i hear there are working on it

i can honestly say, it truly scared me. i am a student at brewer high school, and today walking into the school i had no idea i would be evacuated 10 minutes later. because of one students careless act in making a threat i am now scared to return to school tommrow with the idea that it could happen again. as for the comments about brewer being a school of druggies and alcoholics. that is not true. we have a few students struggling but lets not steriotype the whole student population.

Hey I know this has already been addressed in a way, and thank you to those who have stuck up for the reputation of Brewer High School, but I would like to share my perspective.

As a student at Brewer High School, I am well aware that drug use exists in my school. However, it is not as prevalent as many people think, and yes, it is because Brewer is willing to accept many students who are expelled or otherwise rejected from John Bapst and Bangor High Schools.

However, even in the four years during which I have been attending Brewer High, I have seen great improvement in the school climate, due in a large part to the new leadership of the school.

In addition, I myself am living proof that a Brewer High School student can succeed, and do it well. I have been selected as one of two Presidential Scholars from the state of Maine; I am one of 141 students nationally. Maybe some of you who are so quick to bash on Brewer High should read this other article that was written not so long ago about our school: http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/105326.html

I conclude that Brewer is most certainly not "filled with a bunch of low life punks." That is a cruel, hurtful, and incorrect generalization. I am proud of my school, and I will miss it next year, even at Princeton. Brewer has many caring, passionate, and skilled teachers as well as some of the most motivated and enthusiastic students that I know. Of course, it is a mix. But the person who thoughtlessly committed this action is certainly in the minority and most likely, instead of being under the influence, is merely a person who habitually exercises poor judgement.

Thank you for your time.

Lets all realize that drugs are a problem in alot of schools in maine and the teachers and faculty are doing there best. Did anything think maybe it was a disgruntle ex employee that has been in the news alot again lately due to her claim about not getting rehired as coach due to her coming out about being a lesbian. Just a thought! Maybe if we all were better parents at home and then there wouldn't be all the drugs in the school system each year.

A dog on loan from Bangor PD? What in hell does that mean? Nice writing once again by a BDN reporter.

hrocky70...do you really think they'd be letting in disgruntled ex-employees to just roam the school to let them write on inside walls of the school?! Let's let those who are closer to the situation figure it out rather than those of us in the uninformed public make accusations. It's more likely a student who probably doesn't get how serious it really is to make such a threat. People, especially young people still learning and finding their way in the world, don't fully grasp the impact of language. Or maybe this person does and is crying out for some sort of attention. Bottom line...we don't know!

As a Brewer High student, the comments people have made about our school make me incredibly offended. Yes, our school has students that uses illegal substances but what school doesn't? No one has considered the fact that the senior's last day was the 5th. This could have possibly been an ill thought out prank. But regardless of who did it... don't start throwing knives. The comments posted sound like they are coming from very immature and idiotic people. Thank you to those who defended Brewer High's name. I am proud of our school and the staff that keep it running. We aren't the best but we most certainly aren't the worst. The student body is a great one. Full of diversity. Our school hasn't had any problems all year regarding our saftey. Yet, with this one incident, everyone starts critizing the students. It's absurd. So, please, be careful of what you say. Think it out. Don't make comments without fully thinking about what you are saying. It can turn out very idiotic and immature.

SammyA11 and PresScholar:

Thank you for your very insightful and intelligent comments. My oldest son graduated from Brewer High School. I know that it is possible to get a very good education there. It is up to the students ,many times, to be motivated to take advantage of all the school and teachers have to offer. No, it is not perfect, but then, no high school is.

PresScholar: Congratulations on being accepted at Princeton and I wish you the very best there. I can certainly see , from reading your well-written post, why you have already gone as far as you have. Well-done!

Sorry for some of the horrible comments written here. I think many of these individuals could have benefitted from a lot more education (and some resultant understanding!!)

And the best to you too, SammyA11.

well said chersully. my son goes to brewer, this is his 1st year and he made the honor/high honor roll ever quarter. my brother graduated from there, then went onto Harvard. every school has problems. it is what the child makes it. good luck PresScholar, SammyA11.

I think the punishment should be much greater. I have kids in Jr. High in Bangor and they have about 2 to 3 per year. When it happens you have to go get them if they are not a bus student. I think the ante should be upped and the parents of the child (if caught) should be responsible for the cost of Police and Fire Departments. I wonder if parents could issue a class action law suit for causing them to miss work. The parent is responsibe until they are 18. I will not say that it would stop completely but it would cause there to be less incidents. Nevermind, next thing you know our brilliant elected officials would give government assistance to families with kids that pull fire alarms and make bomb threats and we would all end up paying for it........

Could be a lonely graffiti artist (tagger) seeking to see his deed in the newspaper, or better yet on the news.

In the worst case, it could be the debut of a serial killer, who wants to become a legend... in his own mind.

Tom

I think all these people making hasty generalizations should go get educated on things. Brewer was an alright school. Who are they to say its full of drugs and slacker students.

This kind of thing occasionally happens at ALL highschools. Teenagers are known to sometimes do stupid things that they think are funny and adults do not share the humor. Yes it should be taken seriously, but seriously (ha ha) also take it for what it is.

I agree with sox and joshua. People that have never tried weed or had friends that have think its 100x worse than it really is. Most of the smart kids i went to school with smoked. Sox, yes, EVERY school has drug problems. I have family that graduated from Brewer, one in '01 and one in '04. Both are very smart and succesful.

Whoever wrote the threat should be CHARGED, not just sent to summer school! I say charge them with whatever it's considered, more than likely they will be expelled anyways. But yes, i also think the whole school should have to go on a saturday. Maybe the next time someone gets the bright idea to do it again, they will think twice.

-

Commonsense- Well, probably Brewer PD doesn't have a bomb sniffing dog, therefore they borrowed Bangors! ?

Vchapes- You dont "borrow" a dog.

The people or person who did this do not realize that they truly should NEVER joke about a bomb....for someday they might get blown up by one themselves. These type of pranks are so wrong and scare more people that you could realize. After 9/11 bombs are not so umcommon, and people can make them etc...therefore it is no so unrealistic that there might be a bomb in your school. Don't joke about it for if it really happens...you will be sorry. I hope they are punished to the max!

commonsensepeople...yes you can "borrow" a dog....it is called "Mutual Aid" and applies to PD’s in addition to FD’s. Either Brewer PD’s two dogs and handlers were not on duty or they are not trained in bomb detection.

If I recall, the students of area schools which do not have a High School and do not "contract" with Brewer High School have to apply and be "accepted" by Brewer High School prior to attendance. This caused a huge flap a year or so ago when BHS started the policy. BHS wants to review student transcripts, disciplinary records and the middle school principals have to write a letter of recommendation too before the student is accepted. I do not know if any student has been refused admittance.

And congratulations Erin! I'm sure you will run into plenty of people consumed with jealousy and hate such as Diana22. Don't let them get you down!

Well, Diana22 is just of low class is all. assumes the worst. PresScholar, Erin Mills, 2009 Brewer graduate WAS accepted to Princeton. I just did my research.

http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/105326.html

Happy now Diane. STOP DELETING MY COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

vchapes...thank you for doing the research...it sure does sound like some people are just plain jealous of other peoples success.

I'm guessing Joe didn't read any of the comments because his comment is highly unfounded and uncalled for.

VCHAPES,...i don't delete comments. looks like you have a fan somewhere else. I don't waste my time deleting comments. and yes "Erin" good luck in Princeton,....

I never said YOU deleted my comments. BDN did for some reason.

Best of luck, Erin, at Princeton. Bravo!!

wow Diana22 why do you gotta be this way. Do you honestly after (if you even looked) the link posted earlier that Erin isnt a student at Brewer High. She is one of my good friends and ill tell you something, just cuz she got into Princeton doesnt give you the right to belittle her and say things along the lines of ,...I just do not believe that PreScholar is a student. Can you prove it to me otherwise?? and after people post links of the news video of Erin talking about earning the scholarship you still say "Erin" best of luck. So why dont you wake up, remove your head from a certain hole in your body, smell the coffee, and realize that Brewer can graduate some good students. Forgive us for either not having the funds to go to Bapst, personally the desire myself. Im pretty sure Bapst has had its share of "bad kids". So why do you gotta bring brewer down and say a student from there will never get into Princeton. A friend of mine graduated and went to Yale. A lot of people I know went to EMCC or UMAINE. So pretty much do your reasearch before you bring Brewer down its a fairly good school. I know of only one real problem in that school...... and its not the students

Diana22, on behalf of my class and my teachers, I would like to invite you to Brewer High School's graduation ceremony at 2:00 on this Sunday, June 14th at the Bangor Auditorium. I think you would find it highly enlightening... and I, Erin Mills (and I assure you, I do in fact exist as I have presented myself here) would love to have the honor of making your acquaintance.

As much as some others have overreacted in coming to my defense (and I do thank you, megdionne and vchapes and chersully2000 and mainah47), I assure you that I harbor no ill will towards you for your insinuations about the validity of my presentation. I know that it is hard to believe; I still don't think that the realization has fully sunk in for me that I am, in fact, enrolling at Princeton University in the fall. So please, if you are available, come to the ceremony. It won't last very long, and tickets are not required for admission. I will be giving a speech as the Valedictorian, and as I said, I would love to meet you and shake your hand. I'm sure we would both laugh about this!

This feed is precisely why I chose to go to Brewer. I've never understood why some people assume that they're somehow "better" than everyone in an entire school. At Brewer High School, my eyes were opened to the real world and to people from all walks of life, a far cry from the warm, cozy cocoon-like dream-world that most John Bapst students seem to live in.

Besides, when was the last time there was a bomb threat at Brewer High, the '70s? I believe some Bangor schools like James F. Doughty have had them as recently as a few years ago, making it obscene and unfounded for everyone to attack Brewer as being a terrible school.

Brewer High School has had three students accepted to the Ivy League in the past two years; two to Yale (myself included), and one (Erin) to Princeton. Grow up and cut me and my alma mater some slack; I've had to deal with this since middle school.

jwilliams12 James Doughty school has had several bomb threats just this year. Good choice, Brewer!

I am a teacher at Brewer High School. The bomb scare was very threatening to many students. It left all students one day short of class time to finish for the year. It left us all thinking for a brief time that we were going to Saturday school. It was a tough situation as many kids had not checked into their homerooms. Our school handled it really well. Throwing slurs and demeaning a whole school body and getting off topic is sad and is very un american.

I read the article in the paper but was lead here, by an honors student who was really angry about the mud slinging. Enough. Brewer has amazing students.

It is really sad to read these comments and see kids feeling the need to defend their school due to someone's ignorance. Every school in Maine has drug issues. Brewer High School is an excellent school with a very large population of students that are involved both academically and extracurricularly. One does not need to write here to prove that, anyone who is interested could easily pull up numerous articles on the many great kids at Brewer. The Brewer School dept is also blessed with involved, dedicated and caring teachers and staff who responded quickly and appropriately in getting our kids out of a potentially dangerous situation and should be applauded for that.
