$1.7M Patten clinic expansion gets under way

PATTEN, Maine — Katahdin Valley Health Center hopes to finish a $1.7 million expansion to its Houlton Street clinic in December, officials said Tuesday.

The expansion of the facility at 30 Houlton St. will allow increased access to health care services for the most vulnerable residents. That includes uninsured and underinsured residents who reside below the poverty line, children and the elderly, KVHC officials said.

The expansion will allow KVHC to at least maintain its work force in town, if not expand it, the officials said, while expanding residents’ access to comprehensive primary health care services.

“Funding will be utilized to expand and enhance medical capacity throughout the service area with a special focus on complete family care, improved health care outcomes and chronic disease screenings including: smoking, cancer, obesity, depression, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and asthma for patients of all ages, infants to geriatrics,” KVHC Chief Executive Officer Durward Humphrey said in a statement.

KVHC is a nonprofit health care provider for the Katahdin region, funded by federal grants and contributions from various sources. Other than its two offices apiece in Patten and Millinocket, it has offices in Island Falls and Houlton.

KVHC provides health care services to more than 7,129 people in 26 towns, five plantations and 22 communities in the Unorganized Territory throughout southern Aroostook and northern Penobscot counties, officials said.
