Woman charged with theft of $30,000

MACHIAS, Maine — A 46-year-old Lubec woman allegedly has stolen nearly $30,000 from an East Machias gasoline station and convenience store, Sheriff Donnie Smith said Wednesday.

Teresa Lee Huntley was arrested by sheriff’s deputies on Monday and charged with theft by unauthorized taking, a Class B felony.

If convicted she could face up to 10 years in prison, Assistant District Attorney Joe Cassidy said Wednesday.

Smith said that Huntley, who worked for the store, allegedly stole the money from Archibald’s One Stop on Route 1. Jack Archibald of East Machias operates the store, Smith added.

Huntley was released Tuesday on $10,000 cash or $20,000 surety bail from the Washington County jail.

Smith said that the owner of the store and gasoline station notified the sheriff’s department of the problem. “That led us to the investigation,” he said.

The sheriff offered few details as to how the theft was discovered and only would say that the incident remained under investigation.

Huntley is expected to appear in court sometime in July.
