TRENTON, Maine — A Mount Desert man has died as a result of an accident Friday morning on Route 3 near Mount Desert Island.

The accident occurred around 6:15 a.m. when two pickup trucks collided head-on near the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound, at the north end of the causeway to MDI, according to the Hancock County Sheriff's Office.

Brad Kenney, 31, sustained multiple injuries in the accident and later died after being transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, sheriff's deputies said Friday afternoon.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, they said.

William Brownlee, 29, of Ellsworth, was driving a 2000 GMC truck south on the highway as Kenney was driving a 2001 Chevrolet truck north, Sgt. Scott Kane said

Friday morning in a preliminary report about the accident.

Kane wrote in the report that Kenney's vehicle crossed the center line of the road and collided head-on with Brownlee's truck in the southbound lane.

Both men had to be extricated from their vehicles by the Trenton Volunteer Fire Department.

They then were transferred by ambulance to hospitals, first to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth and then to EMMC. Life Flight helicopter was called but

could not respond to the accident due to heavy rain, according to dispatchers.

Route 3 was closed temporarily and then one lane of alternating traffic was opened up as emergency response personnel worked at the scene, first to remove the drivers from the vehicles and then to remove the trucks from the roadway.

Brownlee sustained multiple leg injuries in the collision, Kane wrote in the report.

Deputies declined to release additional information about the collision, including whether the rainy weather Friday morning was a factor in the accident or if the two men were wearing seat belts.

Both trucks were destroyed in the collision.
