China woman injured in Old Town collision

A woman was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday after her Nissan sedan collided with a Chevrolet Blazer at Center and Fourth streets in Old Town.

Rachel Kummel, 21, of China drove from Fourth Street into the path of the sport utility vehicle driven by Palmer Buxton, 73, of Milford.

Kummel was taken to the hospital with minor head injuries. A nursing supervisor said Sunday that she had no information on Kummel.

Buxton, who was traveling east on Center Street, struck Kummel’s car, then went over a fire hydrant and into the bay window of a house on the north side of the street.

Although the hydrant was damaged, the water line was not, police said.

The SUV’s gas line was damaged and about 20 gallons of gasoline leaked onto the lawn, according to Old Town police. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection was called to clean up the gas.

Officers from Orono and Veazie helped redirect traffic while Center Street was shut down for about 90 minutes.

The accident remains under investigation.
