Princeton woman, 77, escorts armed intruder from home at gunpoint

MACHIAS, Maine — A 77-year-old Princeton woman faced down a man armed with a sawed-off shotgun and sent him running after she pointed her own gun at him, according to court documents.

Doris Gatchell’s daughter, Eileen Newman, said Monday that family members had since nicknamed their mother “Annie Oakley.”

Suspect Dean T. Moore, who was arrested shortly after the Friday, June 12, incident, made his first appearance Monday in Washington County Superior Court. He faces up to 30 years in jail and fines of up to $50,000 on each of the two most serious charges of burglary with a firearm and robbery. He also has been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, theft and criminal restraint. On Monday night, Moore remained in Washington County Jail unable to come up with the $15,000 bail set after his arrest.

Doris Gatchell’s daughter, Vanessa Gatchell, 50, was home watching television on South Princeton Road when she heard footsteps in the hallway at about 4:30 p.m., according to court documents made available Monday. Doris Gatchell had just left the house and Vanessa Gatchell thought her mother had returned because she had forgotten something. “She called out, but there was no answer,” according to the affidavit on file with the court.

Vanessa Gatchell went into the hallway and found Moore armed with a gun and a knife just standing there, the affidavit said.

The woman asked Moore not to hurt her and offered him money, according to the court documents. He refused to leave and demanded liquor, the affidavit said. “Ms. Gatchell opened two bottles of wine for [Moore], and he directed her to the front room where they both sat,” the affidavit said.

Today's Poll

Would you pull a gun on an armed robber in your home?

Yes
No

They talked about 30 minutes during which “he told her he was not afraid to hurt someone and he had used guns and knives before,” the court documents said. At some point during the conversation, Moore discarded the knife, but kept the shotgun, according to the documents.

The woman asked him to leave and said no one would have to know he had been there, but Moore declined to leave, the affidavit said.

Eventually Doris Gatchell returned home. Moore hid the firearm from view as Doris Gatchell entered the front room, the affidavit said. The two women then went into the kitchen, and Vanessa Gatchell told her mother that Moore had a gun and she “thought he was going to shoot them both,” the affidavit said.

Doris Gatchell retrieved her own gun and, according to the court documents, went into the front room and stood behind Moore’s chair.

Eileen Newman told the BDN on Monday that her mother, Doris, had a concealed weapons permit and had a gun “stashed” somewhere in the house. She said her parents at one time owned a sporting goods store that sold firearms. Her father, Ken, is deceased.

Doris Gatchell told Moore she had a gun and ordered him to leave, the affidavit said. “Mrs. Gatchell escorted the defendant out the door. Once on the porch [Moore] dropped his gun and then picked it up again. It was only at that point that Mrs. Gatchell saw the gun,” the court documents said.

The Gatchells then called the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Chief Deputy Michael St. Louis said Monday that when police arrived they at first were not sure whether Moore had run into the woods near the house or had gone back to his home about a quarter of a mile from the Gatchell residence.

Police surrounded Moore’s house and tried to contact him, according to St. Louis, but there was no response. After about 90 minutes, however, Moore stepped out onto his front porch to smoke a cigarette and that was when police arrested him and took him to jail, St. Louis said. Officers found the firearm in Moore’s garage and later recovered the knife from the Gatchell residence, the chief deputy said.

The Maine State Police, the Baileyville and Calais police departments, the Maine Warden Service and the U.S. Border Patrol assisted on Friday night, he said. In court on Monday, Attorney Jeffrey Davidson of East Machias was appointed to represent Moore.

Deputy District Attorney Carletta Bassano said Monday that Moore is expected to appear for a hearing to reassess his bail on June 22 in Washington County Superior Court.

According to the affidavit, Moore has a long criminal history including a prior conviction for robbery and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. In 1998, Moore fled across the U.S.-Canadian border after he robbed a Calais convenience store clerk at knifepoint and stole more than $800. He quickly was apprehended by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, returned to the U.S. and later sentenced to 11 years in prison.

They should put some people to sleep! I am glad the woman had a gun.....if only she had done the taxpayers the final favor and pulled the trigger.

Good for her !

Only thing is he should have been shot dead when he reached for his dropped gun.

No plea deals or early parole.

.

Whoo hoo You Go Girl

Kudos to her.......she should have shot him anyway to prove her point.........it's all about gramma and the gun..breaking into a elderly woman's home, he deserves to be shot.....more seniors should protect there homes to these losers with booze and drug problems...i hope the courts hang him and give him 30 years to make an example out of him....._ucktard, try breaking into my home, you'll lose a leg....

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

taxedtodeath1, JJHampden, birdie, brooks10, and JD2008 clearly understand the 2nd Amendment and gun rights. Kudos to these great Americans with common sense. The concealed weapons permit had nothing to do with this story, either. She had every right to hold a gun in her own home. If she chose to do so, she would of had every right to kill this intruder since her property and life was in danger. After Obama takes "the right to keep and bear arms" away, stories like this will be tragic because the victim will end up dead. Wake up America, protect our rights in the Constitution!

Well said JD

Good Work grandma, you should have finished the job. He will probably get a couple of years behind bars, then perhaps you'll have a second chance..keep that gun loaded..Larry T. Doughty, South Brewer..larrytdoughty@yahoo.com, www.ourstory.com/larrytdoughty/

This story could have had a much worse ending for the daughter if her mother had not returned home.

The intruder had served 11 yrs in prison for a robbery at knifepoint......So much for prison rehabilitation.....

way to go Doris!

This kind of story is what the NRA is all about. This is what they fight for......your right to keep firearms to protect your family and yourself. God only knows what would have happened to these ladies if they had not been armed. Congratulations to them!

Now we wait for the liberal response, telling of his bad childhood, and the "fact" of how his shotgun caused him to enter someone elses home and terrorize, and how much mental anguish he will suffer from having a handgun pointed at him, etc., etc.

This guy sure got a low bail. The local officials must consider him fairly harmless.

This lady is my new hero!! Way to go Doris, great job!

My kind of woman!

he had a knife and a gun-harmless? you must be a tard

He should of took the money and gone and bought his own booze. Guess he'll get his now. Oh, and by the way, Obama doesn't have any intention of changing the constitution on gun ownership. He may have some issues with certain types of guns, but he's got way more important things on his plate.

Markko would call this woman, what was the term you used for people who keep guns in their home marrko....stupid? He would rather she have been raped or killed instead of having a gun in her home for protection.

aaahhh the sweet taste of justice, you go gramma, i am glad to see some people still hold on to their guns, if we outlaw guns only the outlaws will have them, because they do not get them off the white market the go to the blackmarket to get them.

Wow, I can't even imagine someone coming into my home and threatening to shoot me... I'd like to think I could keep my wits enough to help myself but I don't know if I could have the guts that this lady had!! Good for her!

Perhaps there would be less "Deans" and more "Dorises" if more people stood up for themselves. I find it disturbing that

the trend seems to be to cower and bow down to demands rather than to defend yourself. No wonder bullying in school

is now even more problematic than ever. Okay, go ahead an bar-b-que me for saying this, but sometimes all someone understands

is a well-placed size 8 boot upside the head - let's be real here. Using the "I Message" only works for people who aren't nuts in the first place IMO.

It has it's place and is all well and good when it works; however, when it doesn't, there's no replacing the old-fashioned standby "Hand them their

rump" methodology.

Way to go Doris! Kenny would be so very proud of you!

This is why we have the 2nd Amendment, thank you forefathers. Lets hope that people like OBAMA, and his liberal cohorts never take that right away from us. Like many of them wish to do! Doris Gatchell you saved your daughter be proud!!!

Now that is the way to solve the problem. Good work. Let the word to get out not to screw with you. Glad that you are safe and not hurt.

really jersk9... why don't you do yourself a favor and google "Blair Holt Bill" then tell me Obama is not trying to change gun ownership rights. I wish you idiots who blindly follow Obama would do some research. While you're at it, go to the library of Congress and search for "H.J. Res. 5" and discover how Obama wants to repeal the 22nd amendment; which would eliminate term restrictions for him. Can anyone say "King Obama"?

Way to go Doris!!! Woman...Hear me roar!

I happily chime in with the rest of the crowd. Ms. Gatchell demonstrated remarkable courage.

The lefties, libs, media and other assorted, misguided socialists would have us believe the Second Amendment to the Constitution applies to a standing, government army because of the wording "a well regulated militia." Not true; the Founding Fathers were specifically referring to a civilian milita composed of armed citizens. Such militias are as appropriate today as they were in the 1700's. The Founding Fathers knew all too well what governments and their armies were capable of.

What the left doesn't realize is that it's the government's "standing army" that is precisely the best reason for having a civilian militia. In the 1700's it was king george's standing army. Today it is hussein obama's standing army. Not much is different other than a couple hundred years or so.

Anyone who doesn't realize that it is tyrannical governments that are the enemy of free people is a fool. Anyone who would not arm himself in the event it becomes necessary to protect one's self from a tyrannical government is an even bigger fool. Do not for a second think that your own government isn't capable of becoming your enemy. The world history book is stuffed full of examples to the contrary. Current events abound as well. Look no further that saddam husseins reign of terror over his people. Present times are replete with such examples. If it can happen in other places it can happen here too.

If you don't think you are presently living under the yoke of oppression consider this. Over taxation is the surest form of oppression. History tells us that as well. Do the math. Figure up all of your taxes (not just what they steal from your paycheck). It works out to approximately ONE HALF of what you earn. Do you feel oppressed yet?

Over taxation sparked the Revolutionary War which eventually led to the colonies being freed from king george's tyranny. Is it coming full circle?

The Second Amendment as any sixth grader can tell you says nothing about private ownership of guns....Look at the commas.....The Second Amendment refers to "a well regulated militia" or the National Guard.

she spoke softly and carried a big bang stick :) Nice defense!

So many of you turn every situation into a political one. Please, if you feel you could do better get your name on the next ballot. This article is about a 77 year old woman standing up for herself. Period.

Wow! This guys is seriously stupid. Goes into the house armed with a sawed off shotgun and demads liquor?? Then sits there for half an hour with his 'hostage'? Then lets her go into the kitchen alone... then when his house is surrounded by cops he steps outside for a smoke???? What a half-wit! Way to go grannie!! Probably judging by this guys IQ level a swift kick to the balls would have done wonders. Maybe if hard enough he wouldn't ever be able to produce children with even lower IQ's. man oh man. Did he serve the 11 years? Or was he just sentenced and then reduced to all but 3 years suspended with so much probation since this FIIIIIIINE government we have seems to like to let people off easy.

Guess RevGerald would rather the guy had raped or killed her too. The idea that citizens should not have the right to have firearms to defend themselves is simply ridiculous. Why is it so hard for some people to understand that criminals will always have the ability to acquire guns no matter what the law says?

I keep thinking about the man and his daughter that were attacked by the punk with the machete a while back. Had the father had a gun would his daughters face still be horrifically scarred forever? I doubt it.

Way to go High Pockets ! ! !

When there are many people who think that this woman should not have ever had the right to have a gun in her home in the first place, and are actively trying to re-write the constitution to insure that she will not be able to have one in the future, I think the political discussion is warranted here.

True boogyman, but it's true, it's usually the same bunch of people that comment on every article with a political view. Not everything is about politics. Someone could kill a mosquito and one of those people will blame obama. It's a never ending cycle. Personally, the right to bear arms is the best thing ever!! Criminals prefer unarmed victims!

RevGerald, Another case of a person speaking prior to conducting any research. If you had done any investigation into the 2nd Amendment, you would know that the amendment was written several different ways, with different wording, capitalization, and punctuation. The version distributed amongst the states, and later ratified by the states, read "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed". Which means that Americans have the right to own firearms and to maintain a militia comprised of any citizen willing and able to defend the country from enemies foreign and domestic. The purpose of maitaining a militia is to protect the country from tyrannical rulers who would use the country's military against its citizens. The National Guard is a not a well regulated militia; it is a government controlled military institution. A militia is for the purpose of self defense, and revolution. DO SOME RESEARCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eat or be eaten kill or be killed ,her acrion could have got her killed ,if a gun is involved deadly action should be taken first then ask the questions ,like how do you like being dead,but she had guts.peace

This lady had a lot more self restraint than I would have shown, I would have shot the scumbag.

Who killed a mosquito?! Does PETA know about that?

boogyman: are we really ready to start ANOTHER arguement? As much as i love to banter back and forth I am just not up for it with you today. But thank you for caring enough about me to try.

downeast justice at its finest! way to go!

Well berquis, I really don't think we ever have argued. We simply discussed our opposing viewpoints.

Outlaw wrote: Her action could have got her killed. I say her not taking action could have got her killed. She deserves a medal!

To read the Maine law which allows the use of deadly force in such a situation, point your browser here: http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/Statutes/17-A/title17-Asec104.html

JeffEmler , AMEN !

BDN deleted my last post and I don't understand why... I didn't quite see it that way boogyman but in hindsight I suppose you're right, I'm just 'sensitive' you know, ha ha.

Now thats what I call gun control . This person has been a menace to society for a long, long time, maybe this time he wont get out.

To outlaw:

You make an excellent point. While I am glad Ms. Gatchell had the courage to face her enemy with fortitude, and the outcome was peaceful; it is worth pointing out a very important observation. Prudent thinking would have dictated more decisive action. Given the fact the intruder was armed and had professed a willingness to use deadly force, the logical action would have been to take him out. Lingering as she did could have been fatal. Fortunately it wasn't. If she had shot it most certainly would have been a justifiable homicide and no charges would have been filed.

TV teaches us that if we hold a firearm on someone they will bend to our will. Reality tells us otherwise. Armed confrontations are up close and personal, with lots of sneaky tactics and no "rules" to follow. It's best to fight dirty and survive to tell the story.

At any rate. God bless Ms. Gatchell I hope she lives another 77 years!!

As a representative of the left (left leaning moderate) the majority DO NOT want to ban guns. They want some regulation (i.e. check for criminal record, extreme mental illness). Heck I think concealed weapons and their carriers are morons but I wouldn't EVER vote to ban it. I don't know if you guys don't ever read the news and just regurgitate Faux, I mean Fake, I mean Fox news but Obama is an advocate of the 2nd Amendment. Please read real news once in awhile, because you are being lied to and it seems to be making you a little paranoid.

By the way! Doris you rock!

First of all, I will admit that gun control is not an issue that I am very familiar with. Therefore, if I sound uneducated about the topic, there is a very good reason for it: I am. However, I don't have a problem with people like Doris keeping a gun in their house.. Everyone needs to feel safe, especially a 77 year old widow. I suppose I would be called a liberal, but I also try to keep an open mind about as many subjects that I can. To me, it seems that people don't (or shouldn't) have a problem with the fact that Doris had the gun.. But they do have a problem with the fact that DEAN had a gun. People who abuse guns are the people that do the real damage, and make it an issue for people who do NOT abuse the system. I guess basically, for as long as people are going to continue to abuse guns, use them to get their way, and to harm people, then I feel that the ordinary person should have the right to protect themselves.

MaineExpatriat:

How can you call concealed weapons and their carriers morons and then end your post by telling Doris she rocks?

And I'm not 100% sure, but isn't there some sort of regulation on who can buy/carry/use a firearm?? Do you think Dean walked into Walmart and bought this?

Concealed weapon carriers are morons?!?! Apparantly you have never been the victim of an attempted carjacking in the city while driving an 18wheeler. A gun has a big impact when the jacker looks up and realises hes looking up the barrel of a gun!!! People who abuse guns are just like people who abuse welfare, foodstamps etc. You can't obtain a gun if your a felon, but a complete criminal background check? You can't really ban all past criminals from owning a gun, many criminals would never use a gun to harm a person, or maybe the got into some trouble once a long time ago, but are a hunter. (Not defending criminals) Example: if someone stole a car when they were in their 20s, ok... can they own a gun? SURE, why not? I think it would be hard. I believe people with mental problems should not own guns nor should people who have ever commited a crime with a gun (which means i'll still never have a gun). But with so many gun shops and sporting stores, hardware stores, walmart all selling guns, how do you control that so strictly? People will still buy guns for friends. Hell i got my snowmobile in trade for a gun once. (legally) It's such a hard situation to really say 'oh ban guns' because that will never happen, and when it does.... hang on to your hats because the crime rate will skyrocket!

obama is not trying to take away your rights to bear arms,...stop listening to the paranoid right wing crap on the radio and calm down,...you sound like bufoons.

Diana22: Right-on! Where do they get this stuff......regurgitated Rush Limbaugh??? Good luck with that.

As you stated with intelligence, our President is not trying to disarm citizens of this country.

For those of you who may be interested, here is a link to President Obama's positions on Gun Control

http://www.ontheissues.org/domestic/Barack_Obama_Gun_Control.htm

and another from CNN

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/issues/issues.gun.html

Dear Maine Expat-we already have those regulations you speak of and as a concealed weapons moron who carries-I would gladly protect you should the need arise. Do NOT fool yourself about our presidentsfaux/fake love of the second amendment. Just becasue we're paranoid doesn't mean it isn't the truth.

Good for her ! My mother is 67 and she would've done the same thing! But she probably would've pulled the trigger!

Doris Gatchell showed far more restraint than I would have given the same situation. Mr. Moore would have had to have some assistance in leaving my home, by means of a gurney and body bag. Doris, you are a far better woman than I . You are truly a remarkable woman! I am so very glad that neither you nor your daughter were injured.

Obama is only going to pass a couple of small firearm laws, One to register all firearms and the other little one is to disarm everyone. Dont beleave this clown for any reason folks! He is naive about the world.

Fearless.. there is a difference between a license to carry a "concealed weapon" and the basic right to own a firearm. I think you can take it from there.

Yes there are regulations. And? I was stating that's the position of the left, regulations not banning. I think you can take it from there.

Good for her. Instead of a gun, she could have showed him a picture of that sicko from Mars Hill.....that might of scared him to death.

To everyone else... No I do not want YOU "protecting" me with your concealed weapons, unless you are a police officer or a Marine Veteran with extensive firearm training. I would appreciate it if instead of whipping out your penile extension, you whipped out your cell phone and dialed 911. I'd probably live longer.

Yes kmainer some regulations exist. Who said they didn't?

As Freud said sometimes a cigar is just a cigar ---- and sometimes paranoia is just an irrational fear.

Read Obama's actual statements on the subject not Limbaugh's or Fake News - (big secret, they lie).

Well I would rather have a person whip out their "penile extension" (your words) and have someone call 911 on their cell phone, because by the time the Maine State Police transfer the call to the appropriate dispatch center, the shooting would be over!

I have read President Obama's actual words and they are concerning. Like many politicians, you say what you have to say to get elected and then do what you want to do once you are in office.

MaineExpatriat wrote: "Read Obama's actual statements on the subject not Limbaugh's or Fake News - (big secret, they lie)." I think you need to look at Obama's record on keeping his promises, so far, he is not doing so well.

If it was not for Joe Biden, there would be no truth coming out of the White House.

No there is a statement I never thought I would make

Good for her. I'm glad to see a happy ending one in a while.

"As Freud said sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" However, In Bill Clintons hands its a "penile extension".

I think this woman made a courageous and moral decision. She pointed the weapon and ordered him to leave, and it appears he complied. It sound like he had a couple of drinks on him by then, giving Mrs. Getchell a decided advantage. She did not need to shoot him and she chose not to take a human life. This guy has a criminal record and hopefully the court will give him an appropriate sentence. I am glad for all concerned that there was no violence and no injuries.

obviously maineexpatriat is a town dweller because he surely wouldn't want to wait for the State Police or Sheriff to dispatch to him if they were say, an hour away. There ARE places in this state where you can't rely on others for your personal protection. Many responsible citizens are armed and obtain concealed carry permits...not just wackos. In fact you'll probably find someone you know has one and you didn't expect it.

Gun rights, along with ALL THE OTHER AMMENDMENTS, are fundamental to the american values of freedom and individualism that this country was founded upon. We need to stop expecting so much from government and start taking care of ourselves. My pay? I work for it. Health care? I work for it. Personal Protection? Not waiting for the troopers to show up. Food? harvesting and growing what I can.. Americans are so detatched from their own lives it is disgusting, they expect everything to be provided by someone else. DO FOR YOURSELF.

Good Job Granny!

Obama himself may not be absolutely opposed to gun ownership, but there are those with in his majority party that are. The bills they are drafting include shady wording and are attempting to ban "semi-automatic" guns, which they define vaguely and apply to almost every handun, and a variety of sporting rifles shotguns and other firearms. Yes there is a reason to be concerned...its not being a wacko..

History is dotted with the rise of empires, the onset of fascism, and the rise of people who have had enough. Why is it hard to believe that it couldnt happen again? Because the Democratic party is oh so angelic? because the republican party is? All that nonsense is a facade placed in front of us so we can bicker over trivial issues when they all serve the same powerful people who wish to increase their holdings and restrict yours.

people demand your rights, look past the smokescreen, think about what freedom means and how you as an individual can enact peaceful freedom in your life. and when the system smites you for it? smash it down

Good 4 her !!! smart lady

Every grandchild should have a gram like Doris. Nice job Doris!!

I am very proud of you Doris, but like many others have said.. .you should have done us all a favor and pulled the trigger...

barack hussein obama isn't stupid. He is many things that I will not mention on a public chat; but he is NOT stupid.

He has the sense NOT to publicly say anything that would lead most to the conclusion his agenda includes disarming the American public.

He knows that would be politically inexpedient. It would hamper his agenda, and the agenda of his party.

Evil thrives on lies. Evil loves darkness. Evil hides it's actions. The dems want your firearms and they want to rescind your Second Amendment. Believe it.

Yes, call me a paranoid right winger. Call me also a student of history. I can see the future but not through a crystal ball. I see the future through the eyes of history. I have lived only 51 years but I have seen much history repeat itself right in front of my eyes.

Now Doris should take her daughter to the range and get her trained and qualified with a sidearm.

Know how to protect and defend yourself.

.

911 = Dial-a-Prayer

.

Go Granny go!!! Love it and I would do the same thing. I am a PROUD card carrying member of the NRA! I believe in the constitution! Respect the constitution and the founding documents of this great nation....

Obama on gun control:

Q: Is the D.C. law prohibiting ownership of handguns consistent with an individual’s right to bear arms?

A: As a general principle, I believe that the Constitution confers an individual right to bear arms. But just because you have an individual right does not mean that the state or local government can’t constrain the exercise of that right, in the same way that we have a right to private property but local governments can establish zoning ordinances that determine how you can use it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FactCheck: Yes, Obama endorsed Illinois handgun ban
Obama was being misleading when he denied that his handwriting had been on a document endorsing a state ban on the sale and possession of handguns in Illinois. Obama responded, “No, my writing wasn’t on that particular questionnaire. As I said, I have never favored an all-out ban on handguns.”
Actually, Obama’s writing was on the 1996 document, which was filed when Obama was running for the Illinois state Senate. A Chicago nonprofit, Independent Voters of Illinois, had this question, and Obama took hard line:
35. Do you support state legislation to:
a. ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns? Yes.
b. ban assault weapons? Yes.
c. mandatory waiting periods and background checks? Yes.
Obama’s campaign said, “Sen. Obama didn’t fill out these state Senate questionnaires--a staffer did--and there are several answers that didn’t reflect his views then or now. He may have jotted some notes on the front page of the questionnaire, but some answers didn’t reflect his views.”
I love Spunky Old Women.......glad she had a gun for protection. Who knows what may have happend if she didn't! Glad everyone made it out okay:)
From link above:
Supreme Court Decides Second
Amendment Case
The Supreme Court votes 5 to 4 to strike down a
Washington, D. C. ban on the private possession of handguns.
Justice Scalia authors majority opinion.
Interesting quote: "The Court concluded that the Second Amendment does establish an individual right to keep and bear arms for self-defense and hunting."
In the same "breath" however: "At the same time, the Court recognized that the government can regulate gun rights."
Can we make it anymore complicated?
In the meanwhile, I'll keep my opinion to the what I believe is my absolute right to own a firearm, and my absolute right to defend myself in the manner that this lady did. Kudos to her I say!
this story isn't about gun laws. It is about the courage of an older lady, protecting herself, her family, and her home. The jerk had no right to go into her house to begin with. She did what she had to do, and she should be praised for doing what she did. No one got hurt, (thank God), and she is a hero in my book! I'm glad she had common sense enough to think about what she had to do, when some people would just panic. I personally don't know this lady, but I'd be honored to meet her! So why don't you guys who are complaining about Obama, and gun laws, just chill out and actually read the story. She handled it a whole lot better than I would've. If it was me, he would've been in the morgue. Gun laws or not.
The Blair Holt Bill has nothing to do with Obama...it has to do with a frustrated congressman who's trying to do something to prevent guns getting in kids hands...and it won't pass!
Fear mongering amongst gunowners
"Wow! This guys is seriously stupid."
He has been for a long time.
Shame his Dad is still alive to and has to keep reliving this crap.
THAT WILL TEACH THESE CRIMINALS NOT TO MESS WITH SENIOR CITIZENS, WAY TO GO MRS. GATCHELL!!
IF you trust your future to OB or 911 when the chips are down, remember you heard it here.....your'e finished . The local and national criminals now have the upper hand and only true Patriots and people like Mrs. Gatchell who can think on their feet will survive the mess this country is falling into !! Bob R.
Maine Constitution
That sounds Pretty Clear to me.
mainexpatriat- down with the democrats where you belong. go see what the boston herald is posting.
JMill85, I'm gathering I struck a nerve? hehe
BDROBERT - you heard it hear first - vigilante justice died with the old west, public hangings, outhouses and the cure for everything being either amputation or leeches.
Look.. You're in a public place with 20 people around and some crack pot next to you pulls out a gun and yells "give me your money or I'll shoot", you reach for your weapon, he sees you and before you can fire, blows you away. You're in a public place with 20 people around and some crack pot 300 feet away pulls out a gun and yells "give me your money or I'll shoot", you pull out your handgun and shoot, unfortunately your hand is shaking from the adrenaline and you miss. The gunmen, then in a panicked state, opens fire killing a half dozen people (including you) before his clip is empty and then flees into the arms of the police. When reality meets fantasy, reality usually hurts.
Guns for home protection - I have no negative opinion on, at all. Carrying concealed weapons I disagree with but would not veto the right. If that offends your sensabilities you'll just have to be offended, because the more of your comments I read, the more I know I'm right.
Oh and JMill... Maine is a Democratic state too, perhaps you should check the last Presidential election.
In England, Doris would be in jail for having a gun in her house to protect herself. Many states in this country would have the same thing happen.
This mentality, where the victim is punished, is also common in Iran where a woman will be found guilty and punished for being raped.
I'm glad that Doris had the presence of mind to deal with the situation the way she did, instead of "blood in the streets" that the liberals predicted.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Good thing the cops eventually got there to save her.
she could have shot him and it would have been perfectly legal. good for her. everyone with a decent amount of common sense should carry. I do.
way to go Doris... I have known Dean for many years and was not shocked when I saw his name in this article (shakes head) I am so glad this woman and her daughter were not hurt by him.
This is exactly what gun ownership is all about.
POWER to the PEOPLE, baby! The RIGHT PEOPLE!
Hey everyone, I am so thankful that you guys are calling my nana a hero, in my eyes, she is. She may be 77, but she is anything but a granny haha. She is so awesome and she'll set you in your place if you are out of place. She is so funny and she is most definatly time three harmless, she would never hurt anyone unless needed. The one fact not added here was that the knife was my nana's, he grabbed in from the kitchen. All this guy wanted to do was to talk to someone... he felt this was the only way how. He did the same exact thing here in town a few years back. He's a nutcase, but my nana was ready to take him on if he threatened her! I was glad that she didn't shoot him, because one, I like her house a lot, and the blood would be a big mess, and two, it may have been on her consience. She would have if he was going to but, I know this may sound weird, he's technically harmless. I mean, maybe if he was provoked he may have done something, but both my Aunt Vicki and my Nana handled themselves very well, she can definatly be called Annie Oakly. This will teach everyone in South Princeton and all over to stay away from my nana's house.. SHE HAS A GUN! haha. Love you so much nana, what a hero!! I was glad to here you guys were alright that day!!
I commend this woman good for her! Too bad the daughter did not know where the gun was... but all the same no one was hurt...and well they I agree the guy should of just been taken out.. why? Well he all ready did jail time and did not learn.. and was at it again.. he will be at it again when he gets out again.. unfortunately... hopefully he gets the 30 years be interesting to see what happens..
A couple of questions:
I've been watching the Iran elections and wondered if there was gun control there? I expect so, since I don't think police going around bashing people with batons in NYC (or even Boston) wuld last long.
Where is there a range to be trained in the Bangor area?
And a while I did research the gun control bills proposed by Obama (dems) and they are truly scary if they ever pass. I should have saved the links.
Even tho I haven't seen it written about, but I think everyone cansee what's happening in Iran and understand that w/o gun control, we would have a chance to protect ourselves.
@zatwoodz & all the others that want to make this somehow about Obama - you let the last administration remove most of your rights and now you want to stand up for them. Go back to sleep and keep your dream alive.
LIberal Democrat who believes in all the ammendments - especially the 1st, 2nd & 4th - look them up
Got to love a happy ending!
Way to go, Doris!! This is one vivid example of why it is good to own a gun!!
Punctuation was different two centuries ago, as was spelling.
RevGerald also wrote: "The Second Amendment refers to 'a well regulated militia' or the National Guard."
You really think an amendment was needed saying that soldiers must be armed????
.
America's founding fathers were great students of hisory, and must have noted that the freedom of a people increased with the average citizen being able to fight back.
.
The English longbow was the first big step in that direction, as it displaced the mounted knight as ruler of the battlefield. And Feudalism's decline followed.
.
I am sure that our founding fathers were aware that English yeoman were actually required to practice their archery (to "practice at the butts") on their days off from farm work, so they would be skilled in the use of the long bow should England ever need their service in its army.
.
Unwittingly, this transferred military power from the feudal overlords to the people, and our republic would flow from the above events.
.
A free people is an armed people.
Ah, so many reasons to thank one's stars for that border to my south.
No, not so that strange people like Mr. Moore can't get in -- as he did, and others surely do from time to time. Those are things that open societies just have to deal with.
No, the big reason is the comfort of knowing that all the truly ghastly people posting comments on this story will never live where I do.
I used to visit Maine a fair bit, some years back. Nice ocean. Appalling rural poverty. These days, you couldn't pay me to cross the border. And you are all a big part of the reason why. I prefer to be among decent folk. Kiss them tourist loonies bye bye!
Kiss them tourist loonies bye bye
HA HA Bushwah thats exactly what we all say at the end of every tourist season.. feel free to stay home by all means ...lol
"Look.. You're in a public place with 20 people around and some crack pot next to you pulls out a gun and yells "give me your money or I'll shoot", you reach for your weapon, he sees you and before you can fire, blows you away. "
We can all play make believe.
Armed idiot comes into your office and starts shooting with 20 people around. You pull out your licensed weapon and blow him away saving an untold number of lives.
Wow funny how it works both ways huh?
LOL newportres, nice one, ridiculous but very funny.
Perhaps I was wrong to assume that residents of a border state frequented by Canadian tourists knew that the Cdn dollar they spend multiples of on their visits is familiarly referred to as the loonie. That was cute, though.
Kudos to this Gun toting Grandma. Unfortunatly, if she had "busted a cap" in this sucker the creeps family could sue her in a civil suit for wrongful death. Great job Doris.
Nope it wasn't lost on me Bushwah but aint the play on words fun though ..lol
RevGerald - it's obviously not the national guard, due to the Nat.G. being regulated and controlled by the gov't. The forefathers were speaking of self protection from an oppressive Gov't... like the Revolutionary war... ring a bell?
Diana22 - Proove it to me and it will calm me down a lot. Frankly I don't trust the man yet... he hasn't really earned it. Actually I haven't trusted any polititians in a while. lol.
MaineExpatriat - I'm trained and covered to carry "off duty"... but I still have a carry permit... because after I retire... I still want to be able to protect myself and my loved ones... Would more training for concealed carry weapons permits set your mind a little more at ease? Not a bad idea actually... is the 8 hr education course not enough?
Oh and about Maine being a democratic state... it's due to the population of Southern Maine... If the Northern sect had more people, I feel it might be different... Must be the air that blows up across Mass and into the greater Portland area. lol.
boogyman - 4:52 - I almost pee'd a little laughing at that one. Thanks.
hi there. Doris Gatchell is also my nana. Wallywoo is my brother! I also am very proud of her. If this guy really knew my nana he would have known not to mess with her. My nana is not someone to mess with. I am very proud to call her my nana and my aunt vicki did well holding her cool infront of this guy. I love you both bery much!
Now that we have Obama why is it called a blackmarket? Isn't that term politically incorrect? Why not call it the legal market and the illegal market instead/
I don't think shooting him would have been a good thing. He wasn't a murderer. Sure he needs to pay for his crime but he didn't go in and shoot his gun. He didn't even physically harm them. Glad those things didn't happen.
Dean Moore obviously has chosen to return to the only home he feels comfortable in. Thank God nobody ended up in a body bag or hospital. He will go to trial in the near future, or until the DA's office gets their stuff together. He will more than likely be convicted and be returned to MSP.
Here is a prime example of the child being raised like a Feral Cat, that was submitted by someone in the letters to the editor, a week or so ago.
Not shocked. I have known this guy since he was 9 or 10 years old. He has been in and out of trouble since the moment I first saw him. As he got older it just got worse. In and out of jail and then prison. I am not at all surprised to see his name in the paper, AGAIN. Doris had a gun and knew how to use it. GOOD FOR HER! You go Doris!
What makes me laugh a little is the fact that he went home, 1/4 mile down the road!!
wow..appears this guy is better off in prison .. after 11 years it`s home to him . see you later alligator ..lol what a fool .
I love this story!! It is all about what owning a gun stands for. And wow, Ladyslipper, the fact that this creep had already served 11 years in prison for robbery with a knife does support most of your convictions: that he should have been shot. Scary, scary, scary!!
RevGerald, your description of a militia is only a partial one. Here are some other parts of the definition:
* Defense activity or service, to protect a community, its territory, property, and laws.
* The entire able-bodied population of a community, town, county, or state, available to be called to arms.
* A subset of these who may be legally penalized for failing to respond to a call-up.
* A subset of these who actually respond to a call-up, regardless of legal obligation.
* A private, non-government force, not necessarily directly supported or sanctioned by its government.
* An official reserve army, composed of citizen soldiers. Called by various names in different countries such as; the Army Reserve, National Guard, State Defense Forces.
As you can clearly see the 2d Amendment does in fact refer to private citizens as well as a National Guard. I am glad that this woman is safe as is her daughter. I hope this predator does away for a long time.
I am also thankful that "bushwah" is staying home. I came from the country that borders us to the north and am glad that I do not live there any more. I still visit my family but would never consider staying. Luckily I am an American Citizen and proud of it. I spent 21 years in the American Army with no regrets. "Ghastly" people? Quite a humorous comment. I guess I would rather be considered "Ghastly" than spineless.
Hope everyone has a great day.
question to BDN : was the shotgun loaded ? Not that it matters, if more of the spineless stood up for themselves there would be less crime or , better yet, less criminals.
Knowing Dean it probably wasn't...yeah he has spent most of his life in jail but he is kind of the shleprock of criminals if you catch my drift....the lights are on but not everyone is home in that head of his..lolol
Wow, way to go Doris ! Sounds like the Police could use your tactical advice!
Granny's got a Gun!! Way to go and Doris showed more courage than most! She clearly demonstrated she has the courage to do what was needed ahd I applaud her! Doris for GOVERNOR!!!! In all seriousness though--I could care less whether you all agree with the 2nd Amendment, the right to bear arms or not, and blah blah blah. Here is the simple case of a criminal with illegal weapons threatening the life of innocent people--SHE DID THE RIGHT THING! Pleading to a sick minded person to not kill them or rape them is feeding their sick minded behavior. The REAL CAUSE of this incident is, as I say again, our weak judicial system and the judges running the show. Life imprisonment is how this dumb fella keeps from hurting or threatening others. Period.
"He quickly was apprehended by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, returned to the U.S."
The RCMP alway gets thier man -- Quickly
First, i know people tend to believe everything they read in the paper, BUT it should NOT be taken as the whole truth. Second,for the record there was NO SAWED OFF SHOT GUN . I repeat NO SAWED OFF SHOTGUN. This bit of information should have already been in the paper, BUT when contacted, DIANA GRAETTINGER who wrote the initial story and said she would do a reprint, for what ever reason decided not to.( Maybe because it would not have been as exciting). A posting wrote by WALLYWOO92 stated that Dean did the same exact thing here in town a few years back. First I would love for you to explain that one, since it is a load of crap. I dont understand why people need to make things worse when they dont know the whole story.
4wheeling: I am confused, are you DEFENDING this guy? Does it make it better to you that even though he was there to rob/threaten/hurt or whatever someone that he didn't have a gun? If an intruder came into my home gun or no gun he would still be an intruder. Sorry your buddy got caught doing bad stuff...????
HR45, aka the "Blair Holt Bill", which would require licensing of all handguns and semi-automatic rifles (would not apply to shotguns or hunting rifles, BTW), is the pet project of Rep. Bobby Rush of Illinois and has yet to get a single co-sponsor. It is in committee and will probably die there, as it did in 2007 when he first introduced it.
HR5, which would repeal term limits, is also a perennial bill. It was last proposed in 2003 by those who suggested that Bush should not be restrained by term limits. A similar bill has been presented during most presidents' terms. This, like all the others, is unlikely to make it out of committee.
Neither of these is particularly partisan and neither has much chance of going anywhere. They are being called up as straw-man issues to rail against.
4wheeling- I think its you who doesn't know the scoop, poop.. I am sure those two women feel very differently than you do seeing that it was THEM that this happened to NOT you, and yes Dean did do this same thing last time he was out f jail... He held my friends husband at knife point he walked into the store as her husband was closing up and demanded ...are you ready for this da da daaaa ALCOHOL!!! Big shocker there. Her husband didn't know who dean was as most around here know everyone but he was able to tell the police that the man who robbed him at knife point said that he could use the knife and had been in a knife fight at the old portside recently, by saying this the cops knew just who they were looking for since they had been called to the portside for said knife fight... Your obviously a family member since dean is never out long enough to make many friends and I feel bad your family has to go through this yet again, I know most of this family and they are good people and I feel bad this one individual keeps putting their family name in the papers the way he does, they dont deserve that at all.
You all miss the point. How did this moron get a GUN in the first place? Probably legally. If he didn't have a Gun end of story.
U GO GIRL!!! DONT MESS WITH OLD LADIES THEY GOT TOO MUCH EXPERIENCE THEN TO PUT UP WITH YOUR BS
berquis, how do you know he was an intruder? again dont believe everything you read.
lilpaagan, wallywoo wrote that " he did the same exact thing HERE IN TOWN a few years back" SO YES that is a load of crap. And YES your friends husband did know dean, get this da da daaaa, they were friends, now ask him the REAL story. And if you know deans family you already know this. And yes they are good people. My point is there was no sawed off shotgun and NO finger prints of deans on ANY knife. And people should not believe everything they read in the paper. You do not know what really happened, the papers should not print what they want without getting the whole story. AND THAT WAS MY POINT.
great article
