Iran Crossroads

The events unfolding in Iran over the last few days may be the period history will mark as the awakening of that nation’s moderate, democratic-minded citizens. Or it may be remembered as a road not taken, when Iran’s people and leaders opted for the perceived safety of theocratic and isolationist rule.

The reaction to the election that pit incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi has been more momentous than the election. The fact that the ballots, which are counted manually, were declared to favor Mr. Ahmadinejad by a wide margin so soon after the polling ended may suggest fraud. The incumbent moved quickly on the public stage to reinforce this result, and the nation’s religious leaders — who hold more power than the elected officials — endorsed that outcome as well.

Then thousands took to the streets, first to rally and celebrate what they believed was Mr. Mousavi’s victory, then to protest Mr. Ahmadinejad’s apparent seizing of office. As has happened in democratic movements before, when people take to the streets and see thousands just like themselves de-manding the same sorts of reforms, a critical mass builds and feeds off itself. The Solidarity movement in Poland, which helped topple the Soviet bloc, began this way. But so did the so-called Prague Spring of 1968 and the occupation of Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989. Those demonstrations ended tragically.

In a positive step, the religious leaders are calling for a partial recount.

In a press conference, Mr. Ahmadinejad dismissed the demonstrations, estimated to have drawn 100,000 or more to the streets, as actually amounting to only 2,000 to 3,000, more akin to soccer fans than a political movement, he said. He also blamed the Western media for creating the myth of spontaneous demonstration.

“Where did you hear that the people do not accept the vote count?” he asked. “Have you been in touch with 40 million people? You see the few people you like to see.”

Divining the true will of the people is difficult; in this, Mr. Ahmadinejad is correct. But ironically, without an independent media (Western media is banned from covering demonstrations), no one really knows what the people are thinking. Mr. Mousavi pledged to allow private ownership of media, had he been elected, and promised to meet and negotiate with President Obama.

For Americans who may have relied on the Bush administration’s facile labeling of Iran as part of the “Axis of Evil,” the current events are probably puzzling. Is the rise of a democratic, reform-minded populace the result of the U.S. toppling Saddam Hussein in neighboring Iraq? Or did the Bush doctrine hide this wrinkle in Iran, which might have been encouraged and nurtured with constructive, diplomatic engagement over the last decade?

Unless Mr. Ahmadinejad turns over power to his opponent — not likely — the Obama administration faces an increasingly volatile and complex Iran. In seeing the fault lines lies diplomatic opportunity.

I'm so tired of the 1/2 quotes, twisted quotes or outright lies that are attributed to President Obama here. What he said was:

The president said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday that he shared the world’s concerns about the election but that he had to move cautiously because “the easiest way for reactionary forces inside Iran to crush reformers is to say it’s the U.S. that is encouraging those reformers.” “What I’ve said is, look, it’s up to the Iranian people to make a decision,” he said. “We are not meddling.” (end quote)

America is not popular in the Middle East (I'm assuming this comes as no surprise) any intervention on our part will almost certainly have the opposite effect we are trying to achieve. We have a President NOW, FINALLY that is intelligent enough to understand that, I wish all of his people were also that intelligent. Ahmadinejad is already trying to paint Mousavi as being in America's hip pocket and to therefore turn the people against him. At present, we can be of no use to Mousavi, we can only be used against him. We don't need another Iraq but the world needs a Democratic, non-theocratic Iran.

hahaha! Good one David889327. Wouldnt surprise me, with their track record so far, the only business they'll be able to get pretty soon is in Iran.

But really, I think Obama is playing a good hand.

And Obama has reached out and stood up for the Iranian people as well with everyone else in the Middle East when he made that big speech in Eygpt.

And what has happened since that speech? In Lebonnon, the secular party held a majority, and in Iran, the people have found a new feeling of confidence in wanting change in their country. Coincidence? I think not.

Ladyslipper you really need to avert your eyes from Fox for at least 10 minutes a day. Acorn gathers voter registration applications. Those registrations are then determined by the state as to whether they are valid or not. Not one single illegal voter registration application produced an actual vote. And you would know this if you ever watched real news. Now precisely how are they gaining control over the census? And exactly how is a non-profit organization going to turn this country into Iran by counting people?

Furthermore, define "meddling" in Israel. Do you mean giving an opinion? Honestly Lady your arguments are getting weaker everyday.

MaineExoatrait , the census has been turned over to ACORN....you are the one that needs to wake up....Obama took the census duties away from the commerce dept...transferred them to Rahm Emmanel ...who in turn transferred them to ACORN.....ACORN's history is troubling to say the least....it's roots are in Marzxism as are Obama's......you can try to belittle me all you want....but it is you that needs to get their head out of the sand and get with the program.......

LadySlipper Who CARES? As I said before precisely how does Acorn turn America into Iraq by counting people. And as far as their troubling history? Are you kidding me? They are a well-respected non-profit organization that through the years has saved many communities and provided low income housing. In 2008 out of 13,000 voter application registrars there were less than a handful that submitted faulty applications. They were dismissed, the applications thrown away and no one was registered to vote or allowed to vote that wasn't qualified. This is an issue that was made a big deal by Fake News which is rotting your brain. Lady. I read their on-line crap and I dare you to take one story ONE and fact check it. You will find that they stop quotes mid-sentence to give a totally warped impression, they will string sentences together out of order and sometimes they don't even back their stories up with twisted speeches THEY JUST FLAT OUT LIE! You are being lied to and you refuse to deal with it. You have a problem.

Furthermore... MARXISM! You're really gone aren't you? Obama is a capitalist but understands that unchecked Free Trade leads to (today) grotesque fluctuations in the economy that can create extended, severe depressions that can destroy a country. Most Americans and all Economists now understand that too. Obama does not have a skewed view of history or the future believing that only warfare can create and preserve a society, in fact quite the opposite. The only part of Marxism that Obama may be is pro-labor, a position of his I am strongly opposed to and am paying close attention to. We need less unions, with less power and I'm going to use my vote and my political contributions to do what I can to get my opinion out there.... You know Democracy.

And when are you going to explain how he meddled in Israel?

MaineExpatriat, your head is SO far in the sand...there is no amount of convincing or evidence for you to see the truth......Ignorance is bliss.

Ladyslipper give me some evidence. You can't because you don't have any. All you do is puke Fox News propaganda. You don't have any facts, you only have lies that you've been told and refuse to investigate. I'm sorry you want to live like this and I wish I could do something to help you but you turn your head away from the truth and bitterly cling to your lies, because they make you feel safe.

Oh and Ladyslipper... you still haven't explained 1) meddling in Israel 2) How counting people will turn the U.S. into Iran 3) How Obama is a Marxist.

oh and don't forget to provide some facts and evidence. teehee.

teehee, yourself.I am off to Portland for the day.....stay tuned I will supply you with facts ....don't have time now.....

PS, wiseguy, I do not watch FOXX news.....as a matter of fact I have not turned on my television since January.......Just a hunch, but I'll bet you obtain all of your wisdom from MSNBC.......

EXCLUSIVE: Minn. lawmaker vows not to complete Census

By Stephen Dinan (Contact) | Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Outspoken Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann says she's so worried that information from next year's national census will be abused that she will refuse to fill out anything more than the number of people in her household.

In an interview Wednesday morning with The Washington Times "America's Morning News," Mrs. Bachmann, Minnesota Republican, said the questions have become "very intricate, very personal" and she also fears ACORN, the community organizing group that came under fire for its voter registration efforts last year, will be part of the Census Bureau's door-to-door information collection efforts.

"I know for my family the only question we will be answering is how many people are in our home," she said. "We won't be answering any information beyond that, because the Constitution doesn't require any information beyond that."

Shelly Lowe, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Census Bureau, said Mrs. Bachmann is "misreading" the law.

She sent a portion of the U.S. legal code that says anyone over 18 years of age who refuses to answer "any of the questions" on the census can be fined up to $5,000.

The Constitution requires a census be taken every 10 years. Questions range from number of persons in the household and racial information to employment status and whether anyone receives social services such as food stamps.

Mrs. Bachmann said she's worried about the involvement of ACORN, the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now, in next year's census.

"They will be in charge of going door to door and collecting data from the American public," she said. "This is very concerning."

ACORN has applied to help recruit workers to help conduct the census. Republican lawmakers and some public interest groups have expressed concern over their involvement.

ACORN staffers have ben indicted in several states on charges of voter registration fraud stemming from the organization's efforts to register voters last year.

Mrs. Bachmann, who is in her second term in the House, has become a lightning rod for criticism from Democrats and liberal talk show hosts for her unapologetic conservative views.

She said she considers that "a badge of honor."

"It's clear when a person speaks out against those policies they become a target, and that should be concerning to everyone," she said.
