NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine — A local man was killed and four others, including an infant, were injured in an accident about 11 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Route 139 and U.S. Route 2.

Killed was Randy Lake, 23, the operator of a 2006 Ford Taurus, who was flown by LifeFlight Air Ambulance from the scene to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where he died, according to Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Gottardi said that Lake was driving with a suspended license and did not have permission to drive the car, which was owned by a family member.

The accident occurred when Lake’s Taurus approached the intersection from Route 139, reportedly at a high rate of speed.

Gottardi said Lake failed to stop at the stop sign and struck a utility pole, guide wires, mailboxes, street signs, a fire hydrant and another car.

The car, which was approaching the intersection, was a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer, operated by Brittany Grant, 23, also of Norridgewock. Three other passengers were in Grant’s vehicle, Gottardi said — one in the front and two in the back.

The passengers, whom Gottardi did not identify, ranged in age from 3 months to 19 years. Gottardi said Grant attempted to avoid the collision by putting her car in reverse when she saw the accident unfolding.

Grant and all her passengers were taken to Redington Fairview General Hospital in Skowehgan with injuries, none of which appeared life-threatening, Gottardi said.

“This was a tragic accident in every sense, as a life was lost and others were injured, and could have also been killed,” Gottardi said.

“The investigation continues, and the matter will be reviewed by the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office,” Gottardi said.

Investigating deputies are Paul York and Wilfred Dodge, who were assisted by the Norridgewock Fire Department, EMS Ambulance and Central Maine Power Co.

The Maine State Police went to and reconstructed the accident.
