Mapleton home fire under investigation

MAPLETON, Maine - Investigators are still trying to determine what caused a fire that destroyed a home at 884 Griffin Ridge Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Rich Wark, the chief of the Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman Fire Department said Thursday that an investigator from the State Fire Marshal's office was in the area when firefighters were battling the blaze and was trying to determine what sparked the fire.

The fire began at the home owned by Carl and Jackie Webber.

Wark said that Carl Webber was outside the home in the backyard that afternoon when he heard a "pop." He ran around to the front of the house and saw that the garage was on fire.

Webber then ran into the home, grabbed his dog, some important papers, and ran out of the dwelling.

Jackie Webber was not at home at the time of the fire, according to the chief.

Wark said that firefighters found the house fully involved when they arrived at the residence.

Firefighters were on the scene for more than four hours and high temperatures made fighting the blaze more difficult.

The department received mutual aid from the Presque Isle and Washburn Fire departments and the Ashland Fire Department covered the Mapleton fire station.
