Orono women protest inattentive drivers

University of Maine student Sylvia Schuler, 36, holds a sign for traffic to see along Main Street in Orono on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Schuler, a part-time crossing guard, witnessed a dog getting run over three weeks ago and says people often drive distracted. She, along with fellow crossing guard Charity Lawrence, 20, (not pictured), is asking drivers to put down their cell phones and pay attention to their driving. "People are texting, talking on the phone and speeding," Schuler said. "It's terrible. In a matter of seconds, their inattention... can be tragic." The Maine Legislature passed a new law this session making it a traffic infraction for failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle while distracted, whether by cellphone or other device. Buy Photo

Does anyone else find it ironic she is using her cell phone in the picture? Yes, I understand she is asking for people not to use a cell phone while driving but.......

It also appears she has cell phones spelled as one word. Even if you click on the photo which will enlarge it, the word seems to be spelled as one instead of two.

I dont understand what the new State law means for driving while distracted and how it will be enforced.

Are you charged with the new traffic infraction only you crash while being distracted, or just swirving alittle while being possibly distracted?

If you drive while using the cel phone and do the speedlimit and do not swirve, can you still be charged with the new traffic infraction?

Kevin_of_Bangor was LOL last night at the pic when I first saw it......

I work part-time in downtown Orono. Often as I am waiting for the bus home to Bangor, I usually see on average 5 drivers a day yakking on their cell phones as they are approaching the crosswalks..Unlike that crossing guard in the video, I have yet to see anyone or pets killed, However,I have seen plenty of close calls, and have been a near victim myself a time or two. This is one protest I would gladly take part in if I had the time.

Bigjohn- Most people on their phones don't pay as much attention to the road as other, some people can focus and talk, just like if someone else was in the car. But the people that tend to get hurt are the aholes that just walk right out into traffic. Granted, cars are supposed to stop for people in crosswalks but if you dont see anyone and all of a sudden they decide "hey that car is almost to me, time to cross" it's not right. I'm not going to lock my breaks up for someone on the sidewalk, they can wait the 2 seconds it takes for me to go by. If i do see them before i get to them and are able to slow i will. Pedestrians need to be more considerate of the drivers and not just walk out into traffic because there is a cross walk. MOST dont even use the damn thing!!! I'm all set on wandering out in front of a moving vehicle with the ability to possibly kill me because i'm supposed to be protected by a couple lines on the road.

At what age does a female develop a phone that is permanently attached to her ear????

My favorite part about this is that she is trying to get drivers to pay attention to the road, while standing on the side of it with a big sign...Hmmm the sign should say, "Don't pay attention to me! Pay attention to the road!" Good Grief! :)

I do agree that drivers need to be a little more attentive to their driving. I grew up near Sebago Lake in Cumberland County and my recollection is that drivers down their tended to be a litte more aware of pedestrians. Since moving to Bangor 10 years ago, I have been almost hit just standing on the side of the road at a crosswalk when some driver felt it was time he/she took it upon themself to widen the road into a two lane highway. What pedestrian?? Also, I feel sorry for the dog, but why was it not on a leash? Doesn't Maine still have a leash law? I saw this person and thought the same thing as berquis.

telefunkinu47- A FEMALE?!?!??!?!?! I see more men on the phone then women.

I dont think shes really talking on the phone, i think its just for emphasis.

I think you need to put your glasses back on vchapes LOL!!!!!

I knew it was just a matter of time..

im not saying women dont talk on the phone, but go to bangor and you see all the pretty boys driving around in mommy and daddys car with about 5 other pretty boys, all on the phone, and usually going 100. I tend to notice more and more guys on the phone than ever before.

Ok, if you say so..

Real men don't talk on cell phones except when it is important..

These pretty boys are not riding in a canoe while talking on his cell are they.

Dew tell us if you see this LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!

a canoe? i think they'd be scared they might mess up their hair.

Real men don't talk on the cell while canoeing....takes both hands to hold the fishing pole and beverage while the wife paddles....

There should be a certain amount of responsibility for those who are pedestrians as well. Way too many pedestrians dont look at the road before crossing, bikers too.Everyone needs to be mindful.

You are correct Pab.....

It should be a rule that drivers should pull over if they need to talk on the cell phone, or eat, makeup, etc.

Mainers do have a bit of a power trip when using sidewalks.

I swear half of them use sidewalks hoping that they'll get hit so they'll have a hefty settlement afterwards.
