Heavy rains force closure of Maine clam flats

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Heavy rains have forced the closure of most of Maine’s clam flats.

The Department of Marine Resources has banned most shellfish harvesting from Cape Neddick in York County all the way to the Maine-Canadian border because of concerns about pollution from runoff due to the heavy rains.

During the closure, officials say it is illegal to harvest clams, quahogs, oysters and mussels in the affected area.

Clam digging

If I were a clam

And I lived in a flat

I’d be happy for rain

And that is a fact

If you were a harvester

They’d be some lamenting

Cause heavy rains in Maine

Means they’ll be no more digging

Lord knows, if I were a clam

And pollution were the issue

I could hide in my shell

But, you might need a tissue

Ha, ha.
