Moose killed, car occupants OK in collision in Littleton

LITTLETON, Maine — A father and son escaped injury early Monday afternoon after the vehicle they were riding in collided with a moose that stepped directly into their path.

Sgt. Forrest Dudley of the Aroostook County Sheriff's Department said Monday that Jared Bartlett, 33, of Orient was heading north on U.S. Route 1 when the moose stepped into the roadway.

Bartlett was accompanied by his 13-year-old son, Tyler.

The driver tried to avoid the crash but could not, and his 2006 Chevy Van careened into a ditch after he struck the animal.

Dudley said that the van was a total loss.

The moose was killed.

Both Bartlett and his son were wearing seat belts and neither of them was hurt, according to Dudley.

The Houlton Fire Department responded to the call, as did the Houlton Ambulance Department.

Police are warning motorists to be on the lookout for moose this time of year, as flies drive the animals out of the woods. Fresh vegetation along roadsides also brings moose out.

Glad to hear that both father and son were fine.

we can be warned but there are times when you can't avoid them like in this case very thankful nobody was injured.

Father and son you are lucky and I'm very happy you have lived another day! Many times on northern Maine roads the moose win, that's not good, and I'm glad for the moose lottery. People over moose. On a Friday the 13th not long ago my husband and I had a night time moose meeting on a northern highway not far from where you were. It was dark, moose are hard to see and quick, we were knocked out for a few seconds I think, when we came to, the windshield was gone and the car was moving forward slowly. I awoke in a dream state and was not afraid, knowing we would be rescued and we were.

My husband came to 1st and saw blood over my face and body, he said later that I told him I could not see but I remember seeing the fearful look in his eyes with his cell phone in hand. The moose was dead, badly mangled and was hauled into the woods, I had heard men saying. We feel fine now, that was a few years ago, but who knows maybe we'll drop any second, until then we live, we love, we laugh.. ha ha ha and life goes on..

One less attack moose.

Spark up the grill! And I'm happy that dad and son weren't hhurt!
