EASTPORT, Maine — A 15-year-old boy riding a bicycle was injured Sunday after he apparently ran through a stop sign and smashed into the side of a pickup truck.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Chief Matt Vinson of the Eastport Police Department said Monday that Skyler Greenhalgh was traveling south on High Street and was near City Hall when the accident happened. He said it appeared that Greenhalgh went through the intersection and smashed into the side of a pickup driven by Jeff Sullivan, age unknown, of Eastport. Sullivan was traveling west on Washington Street.

The chief said the impact dented the side of the pickup. “I said, ‘Oh my God, a person did that?’” he said after seeing the dent in the truck. Vinson said it looked like a deer had run into it. “I didn’t believe that a person could make that big of a dent.”

Sullivan was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The boy apparently was not wearing a helmet, according to Vinson.

Downeast EMS took Greenhalgh to Calais Regional Hospital on Sunday with injuries that were not life-threatening. Hospital officials declined to comment on Greenhalgh’s condition on Monday.

Vinson said the accident remained under investigation. He said there would be no charges.

The chief estimated damage to the pickup truck at $1,500 and said the bicycle was demolished.

Officers with the Pleasant Point Police Department assisted at the scene.

They have this problem here in my town. Hoodlums running the street on skateboards and causing traffic to be slow. I'd hate to say it but one day somebody will get hurt with their stupid acts.

-An old guy

and seriously what does the driver have to do with the kid crashing into the truck? "he was wearing a seatbelt"

Sometimes an accident is just an accident. Hoodlums? Does your town have a place for kids to go with their skateboards? Exp. skate partk? abandoned parking lots?

Why isn't the bicyclist being issued a ticket for failure to stop? What frustrates me is the lack of bicyclist following basic traffic rules. In Calais, we dodge them on the sidewalk on Main ST, we watch them shoot down the street and through intersections without stopping, etc... In this case, a stop sign was run , and an accident occured.

I would like to make a comment on this, but i can't....I did it once in Milltown.

Skylar is not a hoodlum at all. Maybe you should know the people before you make such harsh comments.

Skylar should be made to pay for the damage to the Pickup or his parents should.

Texting,Count on it..

Rushing to judgement is NEVER a good thing.

raging _bull and stcroixvalley - You know not of which you speak.

I know Sky.

The parents should be fined.. There is a helmet law for kids in Maine, The new law requires youth 15 and under to wear helmets when driving their bicycles on public roads and bikeways.

I don't think he was saying that SKYLAR was a hoodlum, he was talking about the kids in HIS town.

Skylar is a cool name.

I'm confused... Nice kid or not, he ran a stop sign and caused an accident. And was not wearing a helmet. Hopefully he has learned a lesson from this...

Didn't know a helmet was required....

Just an accident. Atleast this kid was riding a bike instead of sitting on his butt watching tv.

the boy needs to pay more attention to his surroundings-hope he is well though
