LITTLETON, Maine — A father and son escaped injury early Monday afternoon when the vehicle they were riding in collided with a moose that stepped directly into their path.

Sgt. Forrest Dudley of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that Jared Bartlett, 33, of Orient was heading north on U.S. Route 1 when the moose stepped into the roadway.

Bartlett was accompanied by his 13-year-old son, Tyler.

The driver tried to avoid the crash but could not, and his 2006 Chevy van careened into a ditch after he struck the animal.

Dudley said the van was a total loss.

The moose was killed.

Both Bartlett and his son were wearing seat belts and neither was hurt, according to Dudley.

The Houlton Fire Department responded to the call, as did the Houlton Ambulance Department.

Police are warning motorists to be on the lookout for moose this time of year, as flies drive the animals out of the woods. Fresh vegetation along roadsides also brings moose out.

was alcohol involved?

I would have to say probably not. Moose accidents are becoming more and more common. He was with his 13 year old son on Monday AFTERNOON. Not saying people don't drink and drive with their kids in the car in the middle of the day, but unlikely in this case as it wasn't mentioned.

I don't know Bull, was it?????

Maybe the moose had a few before crossing the road?

Hope the guys had a buddy with a pickup to load the carcass on and take home. A freezer full of meat kinda takes the 'sting' out of a $500. or more deductible---or the cost of getting a replacement vehicle.

the moose was pickled haha

The moose was texting,thus distracted.

Actually,Moose Do drink in the middle of the afternoon. They have a different schedule than we do.But this moose was a kind, selfless hero! Married his babies mom and helped old ladies cross the street..Ride free! My Moose brother!!!!

personaly, i think the Moose wanted to take his own life. so waiting until the right moment he ran out into traffic, thus taking his own life, and ending several years of agonizing bordom. after all there really isn't much to do in Littleton.

in New Hampshire, the moose stand on the side of the road in pairs. when one moose spots a car from Mass. they flip a coin to see who gets to run out in front of it.
