Wardens find body of missing Bethel woman

By The Associated Press

BETHEL, Maine — Wardens have found the body of a 40-year-old Bethel woman who was reported missing three days ago.

WCSH-TV said Kim Vanderlaan was found dead shortly before 10 a.m. Friday on Walkers Mountain behind her home on Route 26. Investigators have not characterized the death and are stopping short of calling it suspicious.

Vanderlaan’s boyfriend, John St. Hilaire of Bethel, called police Tuesday evening after discovering that she was gone but that her purse, keys and cell phone were left behind.

Wardens searched an area around the home on Wednesday and Thursday before organizing a larger search on Friday.

Lt. Pat Dorian of the Maine Warden Service said Vanderlaan, a mother of two, had moved to the area about a year ago from Rhode Island, where her two children live.

My heart goes out to the family for this sad outcome. Once again someone is missing, our great Wardens come in to the scene, with their wonderful dogs, and team, and then wait two days before calling in other teams to help with the search. Sad it took two days for them the figure there is a lot of ground to cover before they call for help. When are people going to relize that the Warden service are employees, of the State, paid by the State of Maine and some of the people that are part of the search team would rather sit in the station or at the sight and drink coffee, then find someone lost and they make the same money ethier way. This is the third time in past months they have been on a search, and another search team had found the lost person and the Warden have taken the" We did it all". The Govoner needs to start looking at buget cuts in the Warden service. The people that are in charge have been there too long and I believe retirement should be in their future! Last I knew there was no I in TEAM! And then finding out Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue team, who are donating their time, found the young lady, in four hours........ Not the Maine Warden's team ! This is truly a sad incident for the family and frinds of this young lady. May God help with the wounds of loss!

Hey county rescue, couldn't agree with you more. The wardens are so complacent that it does not seem to matter if they find someone dead or alive. It all pays the same, right? Chasin down innocent people on the ATV trails is much more exciting.

If I was a laid-off Game Warden I would be pissed to know the Warden`s service wasted about $200,000.00 dollars on night vision goggles when they already have FLIR(Forward looking Infrared Radar) in their planes and helicopters.I would think the out of work wardens would rather have their jobs back instead! You can only use goggles up close,so what are they being used for?It must be to look inside a house, because FLIR can see anything outside. It`s just another abuse of Stimulus money. The State should distribute money to where it would do the most good, by priority, not want. But hey,the lobbyists get all the attention. You cant speak to anyone with authority unless you pry one of those bloodsuckers off them first.Looks like this whole country is back patting each other, and after all, thats how porkbarrel favors are made.

countryrescue----You are the only commenter so far that has mentioned that a family has lost a loved one. It's really sad that some people use this forum to vent, and forget what the story is about. Two little children have lost their mother; and someone has lost a child. Isen't that what is important here? I hope the family will find comfort , from where ever they choose to seek it.

hey louise, what else is this forum for but to vent? absentee wardens should be your gripe, not the one who posts about them.

county rescue, u the man

Yes Louise you are right on one point, that a tragedy has occured and the family will never be the same. For that I am truly saddened and I also hope they find comfort somehow. But this is still America with all its rights, for the time being.I guess I should have held my breath until a story about how the Wardens Service conduct came along. But seeing as though 9 out of 11 of countyrescues sentences were about the Wardens and their lack of empathy,I got off on a rant.I totally agree with CR,but I am sorry,I didnt intend to highjack the thread. If you could walk in my shoes for just a few months this year,I would think you would be "uncomfortable" too.I just think that if someone could have a job, they should get it.

Hungry-----I do agree with that. It's just that there is a life lost here and no one seemed to even bother with that. Write letters to the editor, and "maybe " it will be published. I have learned in my years that no amount of "ranting" will ever make any difference. This state, along with others, will always put the money where it makes the already money people happy.lIt's always been like that , but we are supposed to overlook the fact!/ I know this is the place to vent. I have done the same. My concern was that most didn't even mention the fact that a woman has lost her life. Have we all become so hardened with life that we just don't care anymore? And karlajs, my gripe is the loss of all feelings from people about the loss of another human being. Sorry if that offends you!
