ORLAND, Maine — There will be fun, food and even a little frolic today at the 34th celebration of Orland River Day.

The day will begin with the annual Alewife Run which will take paddlers from Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery to Orland Village. Paddlers can gather at the fish hatchery at 7:30 a.m. and will leave the Alamoosook Lake beach at 8 a.m. for the 3.5-mile paddle down the Narramissic River.

Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery is in East Orland, six miles north of Bucksport and 13 miles south of Ellsworth on U.S. Route 1. In East Orland, watch for two blue-and-white Maine DOT signs indicating “Craig Brook Nat’l Fish Hatchery” and “Atlantic Salmon Museum.” Turn north on Hatchery Road and follow for 1.3 miles. The hatchery facility is a large red-tiled building on the left. There is ample turnaround space for RV units.

This year, Town Clerk Connie Brown will be the grand marshal for the annual Orland Day Parade which will begin at 10 a.m. at the Orland Consolidated School on Schoolhouse Road. The parade will travel down Old County Road, across the old Castine Road bridge and end at the F.L. Davis parking lot.

This will be the last trip over the old bridge which the Maine Department of Transportation plans to remove and replace this summer. A popular feature of the celebration throughout its history has been the Raft Race which pits paddlers onboard makeshift rafts and floats against each other and the river. The race kicks off at 11:15 a.m. from the Davis family landing on the Narramissic River.

The Cannon Baller contest — in which children and adults run off the end of a plank to see who can create the biggest splash — will start at 12:30 p.m. near Old Things Antiques.

Food vendors and crafters will open in the village beginning at 9 a.m.

The day’s activities will wind up with a family street dance on Naramissic Drive from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Local band Gilpin Railroad Incident will provide the music.
