EMHS appointed receiver for Machias hospital

AUGUSTA, Maine — Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems was appointed as emergency receiver of Downeast Community Hospital in Machias today, according to a press release from John A. Martins, director of public and employee communications for the state Department of Health and Human Services.

DHHS and Down East Community Hospital filed the petition jointly in Kennebec Superior Court on Tuesday. Doug Jones, the former chief executive officer of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, will be named the interim CEO at DECH.

Placing the hospital in receivership is an important step toward correcting deficiencies that have been identified at the hospital, in order for Medicare reimbursements to continue, the press release stated.

On Friday, CMS informed the hospital that as of July 10 DECH would no longer be able to receive Medicare reimbursements, because it no longer met the requirements for Medicare providers due to its failure to correct identified deficiencies. The receiver will now have the responsibility for implementing corrective actions and bringing the hospital into compliance.

Well lets all stop the tongue lashing BS now and let these highly trained people get this hospital back in functioning order. Kudos to the fine doctors and nursing staff that is left there. I can imagine it is difficult to do your job knowing that no matter what you do right you are going to be criticized!

Now that's a first post that sets the tone! Thank you politically incorrect!

Somewhere I read/ heard a quote which said to" stop looking at closed doors for you miss the new doors opening to you."

Welcome your new CEO and help him succeed for his success is yours.

Now go forth and heal! (Literally and rhetorically.)

Mr Jones has a huge mess to clean up. The malpractice of the medical staff has gone on for years. The administrative management are incompetent. Jones will have to do a major house cleaning by firing most of the staff. Both medical and administrative. If firings don't occur, DECH will resume as a cesspool for incompetents and more deaths.

Lets just GIVE THEM A CHANCE! This is a step in the right direction- and it's not going to happen overnight. This is GOOD news!

I have faith that the nursing and medical staff will rise to the occasion, now that the administration has changed. Considering all the good staff that left to escape or were fired solely because they opposed what the administration was causing to be done to patients, I hope that the former employees will not have that held against them if they want to return to rebuild their facility. While I disagree with some things about EMH, I think it was a wise choice to choose an organization with the skills, manpower, and resources to put this place on the right track.

This is the best possible outcome for DECH. Perhaps the hospital will become a quality facility. Just because it is small, doesn't mean it can't provide great healthcare with good management. This team has the experience and the backing of the state. Let's hope they get Medicare approval soon so they can serve the local elderly residents.

BDN... I find it interesting that when a certain woman in Lubec (who has no political status) was accused of stealing money from her employer you disabled the comment section at her families request but as people continue to comment and pour fuel on this raging fire that is destroying our hospital you refuse to disable the comment section on these articles. I think it is time BDN readers boycott this paper and any such media that enables the tongue lashers to keep lashing!!! Let me be the first!

i agree with knightscross.

It is more than the admin. It is the incompetents that reside throughout the hospital who are in charge of the good practioners and make them keep quiet. As someone said in the news, you are a team player at DECH when you keep quiet when something is wrong. This is proven to be true, time and again. Every manager i know of should be ousted, and the CFO and most of accouting (who are all relatives and friends of the chief there.)

politicallyincorrect...I have not seen one negative comment worthy of being pulled down by the BDN on this article. They have and do pull inappropriate comments and have in the pass closed off the comments section.

WillBee or Bill W. Let's try to keep the attitude positive like so many others at DECH and in the community. I think it's completly impossible for "some" to have a positive attitude. I know you've been hurt by this hospital but let's move on and try to give it a chance. I agree that a lot of upper management has to be replaced, there's no question about it but the way you comment makes it sound as if you know everything that has gone on there recently...and trust me...you don't!! Lot's of people have made complaints w/in the facility and just because it didn't make headlines doesn't mean that they were "keeping quiet". Still a lot of work to do but I'm doing it with a positive attitude!!!!
