BELFAST, Maine — The Searsport music teacher charged with child molestation has resigned his position.

RSU 20 Superintendent of Schools Bruce Mailloux confirmed Wednesday that William Wiley, 34, of Bog Hill Road submitted his resignation Monday, effective immediately. Wiley had been on paid administrative leave since his arrest in April.

Wiley was indicted on 10 counts of unlawful sexual contact and one count of gross sexual assault. The alleged incidents took place over a six-month period in 2004 and began when the female victim was 12 years old.

According to affidavits filed with the case, the girl told Waldo County sheriff’s Detective Jason Bosco that the abuse began when she was in the seventh grade. She was not a student of Wiley’s.

Bosco said the abuse started with kissing and continued almost nightly with Wiley initially touching her, then exposing himself, then having her fondle him. The abuse ended when he attempted to have intercourse and she threatened to tell on him.

Bosco said Wiley became emotional when being questioned and confessed that he had abused the girl. Bosco said that when he asked Wiley whether the victim had any reason to lie, he replied that “everything she said was the truth.”

Wiley was booked April 15 at the Waldo County Jail and later released on $1,000 bail. He entered a plea of not guilty during his initial court appearance on May 28.

Wiley has taught music at SAD 56 schools since 1991. He submitted his resignation to then-SAD 56 Superintendent Ray Freve on Monday.

SAD 56 and SAD 34 in Belfast have consolidated and on Wednesday officially became Regional School Unit 20. Former SAD 34 Superintendent Mailloux is now serving as RSU 20 superintendent, and Freve is no longer employed by the school union.

How sick has the world become that you can not even send your child to school without the chance that he/she may be molested by a teacher. When I was in school you never heard of anything like you do now.(not saying it didn't happen but it was very rare that it did if it did at all) I am so glad that I am not in school and I would not want to be a child in a school now a days, they have so much negative stuff to deal with and 90% of it happens at school.(molestation, bomb threats, drugs, kids with guns shooting at random, etc....) When I was in school the most you had to worry about was getting picked on by another student how times have changed and it wasn't that long ago. So sad!

Horrible. One should be able to send their child to school or anywhere without this kind of worry. Apparently the abuse took place at night, according to this article ......to have a teacher violate a young person is just so evil and despicable, and glad he is gone from that school. Hope he will never be able to work with children or teenagers again.

Bruce Mailloux should also be submitting his resignation - he suspended me for a week from BAHS just because I wore a t-shirt that said, "It's OK to Be Gay." Fortunately, the MCLU stepped in at that point and threatened a lawsuit and I was able to again wear the shirts, but the harassment continued. Mailloux often called me out of class for private meetings in which he'd tell me to stop being "so gay." I attempted to sue MSAD 34 last year, and the judge agreed what happened was very wrong - MSAD 34's attorney didn't deny anything, but he said (and I quote): "It wasn't illegal at the time because there was no anti-discrimination policy for gay people." Plus, there is some clause under Maine law that prevents people from suing municipal entities, or something like that. I was also there when Jeff Olson was charged with embezzling money (several hundred thousand over the course of 10+ years) from BAHS and Mailloux brought him right back into the school after that, even though now he's technically working for BAHS behind the scenes.

I eventually transferred to Searsport District High School in the last 6 months of my senior year after daily harassment. Fortunately, the primary harasser who every day told me I was a fag and going to Hell, died in a car accident. I guess now Mike Fuller is in Hell. Anyway, the superintendent's agreement allowed me to attend SDHS for free and they agreed to the fact that as a gay youth, I couldn't be safe at BAHS, partly because of the homophobia of the administration.

SDHS is far superior to the ignorant hick attitude at BAHS. They are a progressive school with teachers who advocate for respect. I met several out gay and lesbian students at SDHS where there were none at BAHS, other than myself. SDHS openly allowed me to wear my pride t-shirts and even gave me the opportunity to speak about their importance at an assembly. I only wish I could have spent more time at SDHS, where I felt safe for once and didn't get death threats daily, only to be told by a homophobic Bruce Mailloux that I should stop being so gay - I expect he's probably anti-gay because his brother was gay and died with AIDS, so that's probably created some undue resentment for Bruce. I don't think he should be working with children, however.

I am sad about this teacher at SDHS - I never personally met Mr.Wiley or even knew his name in my short time at SDHS. My heart goes out to the victim and I hope the Searsport community and MSAD 56 can heal quickly now that this man no longer has access to children.

According to the last paragraph, Mailloux is now in charge of Searsport now as well

$1,000.00 Bail??????? WTF!

Don't count on that in the "good old days" that molestation didn't happen. I KNOW for a fact that one teacher was transferred in from a school because of what he did in another school. Then a girl had to "move a way" because she was pregnant and she didn't have a boyfriend and know of three others that always hung around this one teacher and another that he had made advances on. So, yeah, in the good old days, it was covered up....the teacher finally was divorced and ended up as a drug counselor until the day he died....he never got caught....silence isn't always golden...

What a sicko. Ane let's see if I read this correctly.....he is 34 years old. He began teaching music in schools in 1991. That is 18 years ago. He was 16 when he started to teach??? Am I reading this correctly? I've gone over the article several times & that's how I am reading it. Either way, he is still a sick sick individual. Too bad the BDN didn't post a picture.

this happens all of the time every where,, Churches, School, etc.. no big news

resigned,he should have been fired the day he got charged, and a grand bail.wth is wrong with our juducial system???he tried to rape her ,do the world a favor, shoot him.peace

ahhhhhhhhh Yuk.......................Im gonna puke!!!!!!!!

it might not happen as much if they finally would lock these sick perverts away for life. to harsh some may say, not so. the victim has a life sentence to deal with. they usually start of by drinking or drugging to try and forget and end up drug addicts or alcoholics. then, some end up in jail then are labeled as bad people. unless they change the laws, nothing will change, evidenced by the $1000.00 bail and then a few months in jail. hell, he was out on paid leave, how sick is that. adamflanders, this was not a post to try to promote your gay lifestyle, to each his own, but you changed this artictle into that. we really don't care if you r gay, but this was about another pervert abusing an innocent child. promote your b.s. views in another post, or maybe in some sick way, you r talking for this sicko.

Sadly tysmom, I think molestation happened just as much as it does now, only no one stood up for themselves back then. I hear horror stories from my parents and grandparents and it sickens me.

one more thing adamflanders, i don't know mike fuller but what you just said tells me what kind of punk you are, a look at me, i'm gay kinda punk. if i were the fullers, you can bet you would see me knocking on your door.

Pedophilia is uncurable...it is devastating & hurtful to many people. More people than we can imagine...please educate your young children what to watch out for. I have warned my daughter who is 8...you never know who the predator could be...or where. Therefore, the only way to let your child know this is wrong is to teach them...for these predators are cons & sweettalkers. They are sick... literally!

What I wanna know is how did Wiley have access to this child at night? If there was any kind of rehearsal there should have been a parent or another adult present.

Who repeatedly clicked the thumbs down on drc? I see nothing wrong with the post.

Anthoine, Adam had intended to make a point about Bruce Mailloux. He may have gone on a gay tangent, but the tone of the post shows how injustice is widespread. If Fuller was harassing Adam then died in a car accident, that is karma dealing its own justice.

Mainer50 you are absolutely correct. Abuse did occur, but children were not encouraged to tell. A popular phrase..."handle it in house/in school/in family"!

I am skeptical about Wiley's real age; perhaps he was not a certified teacher then, perhaps he was assisting?

Kudos to the girl for standing up for herself when he tried intercourse! Keep up the good fight young lady!

Astrol: unfortunately there are a lot of incidents where ONE teacher is left alone after school with ONE child. At least alone in the same room, if not the building. If there is no reason to distrust they wouldn't have been "checked on".

He has admitted he did it. This makes it easier on the victim. At least she won't have to prove it. This is the ONE thing he did right. I hope this will help her in her recovery. I also hope he will have to face HIMSELF. That will hurt. A personal inventory is called for.

tysmom don't forget about taking your kid to church or camp also.

Well if the attorney's, and the court system can get away with it and announce it at that. Um so what says he couldn't get away with it? Blame the court system. My daughter was molested took 2 years for the guy to say guilty and guess what he got 1 month in jail. I asked how does he get only one mouth Belfast DA said he is a sick man and is dieing. Those are the exact words SHE used. This was back 94.

Greens... that is not justice at all. Sorry they didn't take care of it better for your daughter...

Berquis: there should be a policy for extracurricular activity that there be more than one adult present for the sake of appearances at least. Abuse can occur between male teacher and student, but also female teacher and student (remember Mary Kay Letourneau?)

Oh I definately agree!!! Without a doubt! I'm just saying that as of NOW they don't have a policy in most schools for this.

I believe that this man is guilty, confessions tend to help with that, even though he is now retracting it. HOWEVER, It is necessary in this day and age for people accused of a crime to be put on administrative leave until they are found guilty in a court of law, or resign. A person who is acquitted can then turn around and sue their employer, in this case a school district, for wrongful termination . And who pays for that folks? US! So caution is the reason for paid leave until he was convicted or resigned.

When Mr. WIlley is convicted he WILL go to jail. When he is released, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. His teaching certification will absolutely be revoked (that's the law) and he will never be allowed with other people's children again. When he molested that child and caused such damage to her life, he ruined his own too. And he deserves what he gets.

I am a former teacher of Adam's. I understand his point about injustice. BUT I am still wondering about the Bruce Mailloux rant given that this incident happened in MSAD 56, and Bruce Mailloux became the person in charge of RSU 20 YESTERDAY when it legally formed. When the incident happened and Mr. WIlley was put on leave, MSAD #56 had another person as its superintendent.

His facts about Mr. Olson are completely incorrect. Yes he embezzled. He went to jail, when he got out he went to work at a local business, where he was paid by the hour and spent a long time paying back the embezzled money. He was not rehired in any capacity in the school system. Do you really think that the employees whose money was stolen would put up with that? Oh, and Mr. Mailloux was NOT in charge of MSAD #34 when this incident happened, he was an assistant principal. I'm not a fan of Mr. Mailloux's and am not particularly fond of the way this guy runs things myself, but get your facts straight!

Adam will be glad to know that BAHS just spent a month and several assemblies specifically dealing with civil rights of all people, which was led by the very active civil rights team.

I was going to be nice about this, but given the tone of his comments, his statements about people's brothers, etc, I decided to be blunt. Adam is currently incarcerated for aggravated assault (?) on the father of the UNDERAGED person that he was seeing, because that parent forbid the continuation of the relationship. Seems there is a little bit of irony here - people in glass houses..........

I forgot to mention that Wiley will not spend only a month in jail like the abuser of a previous posters daughter. As a teacher or person of authority, the law holds him to a higher standard (and it should). The minimum sentence is one year. How much more he gets will depend upon the judge doing the sentencing.

It's pretty bad that he confessed and we still have to pay him. He should've resigned a long time ago, instead of double dipping from the system (not that he is afraid to do the wrong thing morally). And there should definitely be some kind of law to force people like him to pay the money back once they are found guilty, because as a taxpayer, I am disgusted.

This has nothing to do with liberals....re 3:30 PM. This was a sick, evil individual. It has nothing to do with politics. What an uneducated comment. 3:30 PM

Gotta agree with chersully! This is not the fault of the public school system either. There are many many wonderful, devoted teachers that work in the public system. More often than not teachers save so many children from some sort of horrific situation. This jerk is NOT the norm by any means and other teachers should not be clumped into the same catagory just because they work for the public school system.

drc480: This also happens most of all, in the home, however that is the safest place, for when it is reported, nobody will protect the Child. As you said, 'no big deal'.

This article states this girl was NOT his student. This had to have happened in the home or within close proximity for him to have had access to her at night.

I do not condone what he did, at all. He is, however, entitled to his day in court, like everybody else. You can confess and plead not guilty. That may allow for a plea deal and probably the reason he had a low bail. It sounds like he co-operated with authorities and he validated everything his young victim said.

There may have been less abuse back in the time when I went to school. Back then, most families were two parent families and if someone touched your kid or acted inappropriately, it was often dealt with outside the court system. Vigilante justice is swifter. I cannot get any kind of handle on the circumstances of this case but I do know I would NOT want a male member of my family to be accused and not have a proper opportunity in the justice system.

My husband was abused, on more than one occasion, by more than one person because he came from a fatherless household. He was groomed each time to believe in the person who was to become his abuser. Back then, it never was reported, and never went to court unless it was a random, violent attack,

Fortunately, my oldest child is going to college this year and she is able to make good decisions for herself. My son, who is younger, and who's father is deceased had been advised not to remain in any classroom or office with any teacher or any administrator, with one exception, when the door is not open. If he is alone and the door is closed, he has been told to explain to that teacher that his mother "has a policy" and ask that the door be left open or that he be excused immediately. I trust every member of our current school staff, but given what his Dad went through, and the Hell it wreaked on his life, I will not allow my son to be in that vulnerable position that his Dad was in.

Readthearticle - I am NOT currently incarcerated and I haven't been for a long time now. I'm home and I just completed an Maine Writers course as the last part of my gen ed requirements before I get my BS in biochemistry next year from UMaine. Some of those convictions are being reversed this month as I have been appealing them and found that I was in fact illegally sentenced by a DA who was motivated in part by homophobia. My boyfriend was NOT underage - the age of consent in Maine is 16 (for anyone) or 14 as long as you're not 5 years older than that person. I got 7 months out of the aggravated assault and I was only defending myself against a homophobic father - my ex even stated in his handwriting that he deliberately set me up, and the father is now dead anyway - karma, like Mike Fuller, I guess. I think it was suicide, but they said it was a heart attack at age 38.

Another teacher formerly at BAHS, Ann Marshall, told me that Olson was still working for BAHS behind the scenes and I have to wonder if you, "Readthearticle" are not Lila Nation, one of the teachers at BAHS who hypocritically is herself a lesbian yet perpetuates homophobia in the school via apathy. She saw another student call me a "fag" and said, "Well, they hate you" and then walked off. Ann Marshall was the only good teacher at that school who tried to do anything about the problem. Some teachers were obviously sympathetic, but too afraid to speak out against Mailloux.

And the only reason I have those aggravated assault charges was because I was carrying a knife with me at all times beginning in high school because I was getting death threats at least every week from people like Mike Fuller and Mailloux wouldn't do anything about it.

Readthearticle - YOU need to get YOUR facts right. I haven't even been incarcerated in the year of 2009! The "assault" (which was really self-defense) took place in early 2007. I served 5 months, got released on bail for 6 months during which time I returned to UMaine and completed a 17-credit semester, and then I was sentenced in January 2008 to 9 months, but because of the time served and good behavior, I was home in 2 months and that was that. Maybe if teachers like you had made more of an effort to change the school climate, I wouldn't have been carrying a knife all through high school and beyond to begin with - I was always in fear for my life at BAHS. There is a copy of the superintendent's transfer on my website, adamflanders.com - along with all my other activism, like my article in NY Times and the Portland Press Herald and XY magazine. I should probably also publish the email from Lila Nation the school attempted to use against me when I tried to sue them - except the email was labeled "unsent" and full of ridiculous arguments. She had to be careful with the administration anyway since she was walking on thin ice after being caught sniffing glue years ago in the classroom. She used to spend many of our classes telling all of us about her days as a drug addict, using heroine and who knows what else, so I can't be surprised that she's so messed up - I'm not sure how she's still working at that school, let alone leading the Civil Rights Team, whatever that represents. When I was there, the CRT, led by Leslie Stein, wouldn't even talk about GLBT issues because it was "too controversial." Some CRT - it was a joke.

astol64, I believe from what I read in another article about this guy, that he molested a young relative, not a student. I believe that it said in another article that it wasn't a student of his.

pedophelia and homosexuality are are both mental illnessess andthey ruin and hurt the lives of a lot of people family and freinds . there is help for these problems. its called counseling but it only works if the person wants to be cured .

Possibly this teacher grew up where boys and girls shared the same bathroom at school?

The reason for the low $1000.00 Bail is that this happened over 5 years ago and there is no evidence that this individual is a repeat offender and also he has admitted his crime and shown great remorse at what he did and is a person of little means and thus not very likely to re-offend or to flee.

And those that think this sort of thing is on the rise are so very ignorant. The only thing on the rise is that we as a society over the last 10-20 years arefinally dealing with this sort of stuff and if anything, that is resulting in less of it going on and that is a very good thing. Yes, it is in the news and courts more than ever before and that makes us think it is now more prevelent but stuff like this has gone on for as long as humans have been on this earth and at one time not so very long ago 12 years old was official marrying age (and 14 is still legal in some US States).

So it is good that more and more individuals are being caught and procecuted, not becasue there are more of them out there than ever before, but becasue we are dealing with this problem better thn ever before and that is a very good thing. This dark cloud has a silver lining and what I fear is when they get better control of this is the day there is less procecution and this insidious stuff starts to grow again. And what we don;t yet see enough is in family investigations and procectuions because that is generally where this sort of thing begins and that is where these bad persons come from, having been a vicitim of a close family member or relative and until that cysle can be borken, there will always be a fgresh pool of these perverts out there and thay can be anyone, your teacher, your public official, your boss, your co-worker and you will never know.

Oh and based on the story of homophobia above, it just goes to show that bigotry and ingnorance is often the perfect atmosphere for perverts like this guy to find a comfortable home. Bigotry and ignorance tends to drive bad poeple that much further underground and then they end up as teachers abusing your kids. Ergo, the atmophere created by the BAHS system, though at no fault for ehat this guy did, did create an atmosphere where he could prey on kids, as long as he was not gay.

The next thing you know, the State of Maine will allow gays to marry! Ooops.

Out on $1000.00 bail? Come on, this man MOLESTED A CHILD!!!!!!!! Get real people....... When he goes to jail, the prisoners will take care of him very well, have no doubt about that.

The next thing you know, Maine will outlaw bigotry and make it a capital offense. No oops yet but one can only hope!
