Palmyra man dies after crash in St. Albans

ST. ALBANS, Maine — A Palmyra man was killed Tuesday night when he lost control of his car on Route 23 and it rolled over into a ditch.

The driver of the vehicle, Dustin Small, 19, was conscious after the accident but died later at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, according to Sgt. Mike Knight of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Knight said Small, along with his passengers — Todd Spencer, 19, of Hartland, and Small’s father, Frederick Small, 43, of Palmyra — were traveling on Route 23 from Corinna toward St. Albans when the accident occurred at 9:20 p.m. Spencer and Frederick Small were both treated at the Pittsfield hospital, then released.

It appears Dustin Small went off the road on a downhill curve, overcorrected, lost control and the vehicle rolled over twice, Knight said. The vehicle, a 2005 Nissan Sentra, was demolished.

A LifeFlight helicopter went to the scene but was unable to fly because of the weather, according to Knight.

He said he was unsure whether Small and his passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Knight said Route 23 was shut down for about seven hours while the accident was reconstructed. State police and St. Albans firefighters assisted the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
