I have seen a lot more snakes on my property than usual this year, thankfully nothing that big however. Im not scared of snakes but to someone who is that thing would be terrifying (sorry begformercy but I am not referring to you!)

My boys and I would love to find a snake, seventeen feet long or otherwise. Guess we're Slytherans at heart.

Whenever I think about snakes, I think of the book of Genesis and how the devil tempted Adam & Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden (therefore all would become sinners) and whenever I hear about incessant rains, I think of Noah, who was found to be righteous in God's sight and who was obedient when told to build an ark , one in which he and his family and two of each kind of animal would be spared from the flood. And I sometimes wonder in the big scheme of things if there is any relationship between these "elements" of nature that we experience today and those then. Could it be that a holy God is trying to get our attention? Just a thought...

I'm pretty sure the rain is due to a string of slow moving weather systems and the snake is due to someone losing a pet. I prefer scientific explanations over God since, you know, science is how things actually work and God isn't real.

Too many people are bringing these exotic deadly snakes into this country where they do not belong. A 2 yr old girl in Fla was strangled this wk by one of those pythons. Her mother's boyfriend kept it in the house. Now she (the mother) has to live with this. The Fla Everglades is now overrun with more than thousands of these snakes. Not good...people should not keep these kinds of snakes as pets. This man did not have a permit to have one in Fla, which means he had it illegally and will be charged for that. I sure hope there are not many of these kinds of snakes in Maine.

Doubtful. Most live the majority of their lives in a tank with food delivered directly to them by a human. If they escape into the wild, their hunting skills and overall activity level is seriously hindered from the start, they cannot find food and they die. It is a rare case in Maine that a pet snake would get away and survive on its own long enough to become that large.

What do you bet it isnt a LOST pet but a pet that someone couldnt handle anymore so they just let it go. Let it become someone elses problem. Just a thought. Alot of people get these critters and then cant handle the expense or space they need to live happily ever after.

Here's what PETA will do.

1) They'll do nothing at all to attempt to capture this snake themselves so that they can treat it in a humane manner

One night, I woke up and the scripture 2 Chronicles 7:14 was indented on my mind. The scriptures reads, "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." After this dream, there was a series of disastrous events to hit Florida. For example, Frances, Jeanne and Wilma were all in a row. I do believe that there is a connection.This is not the first time that I have had "prophetic" dreams. I do believe that the lord is trying to get our attention. Snakes in a Drain: I've had it with these monkey fighting snakes on this Monday through Friday plane!

This is a silly forum about a big snake so I would say nothing is off limits. And those scared of big snakes, get a friggin' life. Not a threat to you but maybe small animals. Sankes like these make turtles seem like race cars and if you can't escape one then you deserve to be uits prey anyway! Maybe a frew more bifg snakes and we'd have a whole lot less idiots out there. But in reality, the only life that is really at risk here is the snake's and I am sure it will be taken. But I say lets have a lot more snakes and whole lot less humans!

A 17FT snake is a top predator, very dangerous and can take down anything including a human. Nothing would stand a chance it wanted. Most likely it is not that big but even a fraction of that size would be a concern. Until it is caught or freezes solid it should be tracked and captured. Somehow I doubt even the warden service is looking forward to dealing with this. It is estimated in Florida they have over 100,000 exotic snakes now living in the wild from people who let them loose when they get too big. What idiots.

Snakes prey very differently than other predators and a snake like this is not out seeking out humans. It is siply hoping to not be preyed upon itslef and find some nice small animals to eat and a warm place to heat up (and with this weather that ain't easy so at best it is suffering and very sluggish). You yourself prove how harmeless this sanke really is to us as in 100,000 loose in florida and yet we never hear of one person or large animal having been preyed upon by one. Yes, a snake like this could kill a human but that is very, very unlikely and it mostl likely having been a human pet kaes it even less likely. But I am sure you think there are terroroists living next door as well and about to attack you so I can understand why you are such an ingnort fear monger.

FYI: the biggest danger to you, and us all, and always has been, are other stupid humans like yourself. Stupid humans are the number 1 killer now and always have been, not big snakes that get free in the wild. Of course, your probably scArdd of a garden snake. And snakes are devils that force humans to eat apples and fall from grace so it all makes sense.

Sorry folks, but a snake like this could easily survive the winter in Maine, But it would have to find a nice basement or very deep hole or even a sewer system to live in near a decent food source that would wander into where it was. And the food is not really necessary as a snalke like this can go months w/o eating and just needs to stay maybe 10 degress above freezing to stay alive and so a 55 degree basement would do just fine and at that temp they can go that much longer without eating due to the much slower metabolism.

But again, not really a threat to any human othet than maybe a baby left completely neglected out by the edge of the woods or something. Also, most likely acclimated to humans so not likely to see us as prey and though a 17 foot snake can kill a human, not at all likely.

This sounds like an X-Files episode--17' snake eating people and then having PETA involved by causing criminal hinderance to the capturing of this beast all the while bible thumpers are protesting everyone as an act of God. Mulder will believe the snake is an alien and Scully is fighting her inner beliefs while arresting the arresting the PETA folks and preachers--Wow!!! I can see this episode running three hundred re-runs on the SciFi channel already! LOL

Pab, you are mistaken, an average fictional snake grows at a rate of 10 to 12 feet per day, feeding on small pets, kids and homeless camping by the waters edge. Using these guidelines, this snake should be approaching 100 feet and should have wiped out almost the entire population of Rumford and Mexico as well.

I found a snake behind the shed on Saturday...about 14 or 15 inches long, I mean it was HUGE!! I beat the crap out of it with a shovel and then the wife came over and grabbed the bloody carcass and started chasing me around with it!! No respect!

I deep fat fried may 5 1/2 foot western rattler over Thanksgiving. Deep Fried rattlesnake dipped into a good beer batter is delicious, not sure how a deep fried 17 foot snake would taste, (anything fits on a Rits) cracker that is.
