By The Associated Press

STONEHAM, Maine — Maine State Police are investigating a fatal all-terrain vehicle crash.

Police believe the crash happened sometime between 11 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday in Stoneham. A passing driver found the victim, 51-year-old James Mullen of Stoneham, on the road.

WLBZ-TV reports that police believe driver inattention caused Mullen to be thrown from the vehicle and they are still investigating whether alcohol was a factor.

My prayers and condolences to Mr. Mullen's family at this difficult time.

The BDN and/or the police always throw the alcohol thing in there, even when it is apparent that alcohol is not involved. I realize we have state laws that require testing in any fatal motor vehicle accident. Are there any police officers or other law enforcement that can tell us WHY it is always part of a published story? This is painful enough for the victims family and friends without twisting the knife in their wounds.

This victim was found on the road, where another driver found him. How do we know he was not forced from the road by another vehicle?

Isn't operating an ATV on a public road illegal? ATV manufacturers warn buyers not to operate these vehicles on public roads. Any accidental death is a tragedy, especially when they may have been prevented.

Raysgirl, just curious as to why you think alcohol might not be involved........between 11 p.m. and 2.a.m.? Watch and learn.
