Poachers snip away 100 rose blooms

By The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Police in Maine's biggest city are on the lookout for a thief with an eye for roses.

Gardeners at Portland's Deering Oaks Park noticed Monday that someone had snipped 100 blooms from the rose bushes. The same thing happened last year but not on the same scale.

The Deering Oaks Rose Circle features 600 rose bushes, and horticulture supervisor John Shannon calls it a "jewel to the city of Portland."

Shannon tells The Portland Daily Sun he's saddened to see the poaching. Police are boosting patrols to protect a 71-year tradition of roses in the park.

Uh-oh....the infamous rose snatcher again makes his/her/their notorious attack.

My suggestion is the rose enforcement squad turn their attention to local flower vendors. Perhaps the 'evidence' is under their noses.

BUT WATCH OUT.....it's a dangerous duty....those roses might have thorns.

im thinking some one who's having a wedding or funeral.

Don't know about that funeral candidate...might have a hard time getting out at night.

Maybe a broke boyfriend needed to make MAJOR ammends???

I bet they are being sold out of someone's van. Whomever did it is stealing from the people of Portland, who pay for their parks. I hope the city puts in some web cams as well as appropriate lighting in order to capture the faces of these despicable thieves.

lol this is truely great. nancy if the people of portland pay for the flowers, then the people of portland (in my opinion) have rights to the flowers.

Well, this is a thorny problem for sure.

Maybe, just maybe... Our good Lord created flowers for our pleasure. In addition, as an added twist, these thieves are making the plants healthier. You are supposd to cut roses off of the rose ushes. The nutrients required to maintain the buds are the same nutrients required for root health. Stop wasting money.

Someone is probably making Potpourri with the rose petals.
