Full Bangor chamber board upholds president's firing

BANGOR, Maine — The full Board of Directors of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce voted Thursday to uphold a decision made last week by the board’s smaller executive committee to terminate the employment of longtime president Candy Guerette.

John Diamond, chairman of the chamber’s board, made the announcement of the board’s decision, which he called difficult but appropriate and timely.

Diamond also indicated that the Board of Directors would immediately move forward with the process of conducting a search for a new president/CEO. Board member Jerry Whalen, vice president of business development for Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, will chair the search committee.

“The Board is confident that it will attract a strong pool of candidates with leadership and business advocacy experience,” the chairman said in a statement from the chamber. “Meanwhile, the Board continues to move forward with the communication and implementation of its long-term strategic plan.”

Despite Thursday’s decision, a special meeting open to any and all members of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce that is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Friday will proceed as scheduled. The meeting will not reverse the decision by the executive committee and the full board, but could determine whether or not an advisory committee will be formed to investigate the matter further.

So, could we honestly make a figure of thought that Mrs. Guerette did not manage the agendas and criteria of the goals and business plan for the Bangor Chamber of Commerce? The actual information on her release was not made public.

Now, moving right along...

Ahhhh to have your salary paid for by tax payer money. Where else can you negotiate the terms of getting fired?

I'd settle for some of that paid administrative leave right about now...

The full Board voted, but was it unanimous? The story does not indicate the exact vote total. How many voted? If not unanimous, what was the split? Not much meat or detail in this story.

Welcome to the Bangor Business after hours, LOL.

Sounds like the office sitcom the way this was orchestrated.

What a pathetic bunch of characters representing the image of Bangor's Business climate.

Ms. Guerette got her long over due just desserts. Yay! fot the Chamber and its Prez. Too bad she had not been exposed earlier for her incompetence and abuse of authority. In my opinion after dealing with her personally, I believe she should be in jail! This is not the first case of her abusing her position and authority.

Want a few more details on her previous transgressions? firecap66@yahoo.com will be glad to give you more!

Bernie it sounds like you have a huge ax to grind with Candy. But seriously, how long ago was Candy the Town Manager of Orrington? Wasn't it three Town Managers ago? You really should let the bad feelings go and move on with your life. Let it go, it's not healthy.

To JD: When someone deliberately destroys your life out of vindictiveness, it is not something I am willing to turn the other cheek on. She caused enormous pain and grief to my entire family and drove me close to the point of suicide. Yes, I hold a grudge against her as I would anyone that abused their authority to cover their own criminal acts!

Now if only we could get rid of Chip Morrison in LA. I suspect when he dies they will have to screw him into the ground.

I seriously question the Board Chairperson's ability to lead at this point based on how poorly this was handled. I have to give some serious consideration to my future membership with the Chamber.

The full board unanimoufsly upheld the unanimous decision of the executive committee according to news reports. Looks like Guerrette tried to call their bluff by calling for a public meeting. All she got was public embarassment. I hope we get to hear what she did wrong.

harvest and Bernie...this is not over by a long shot. The "public meeting", called by the Chamber membership is tomorrow night at the Bangor Public Library.

yourekiddingright...the company I work for has already decided not to renew its membership.

This is a fine display of Bangor Politics at its best, a typical scenario out in the open for everyone to see.

Just heard that Guerrette went door to door to get the minimum signatures for her petition to call the meeting. Her lawyer's letter said she was putting the chambers interest first. Not seeing the connection.

Harvest...we get it. You don't like her. It doesn't matter if she went door to door or stood in the middle of the downtown fountain singing Broadway show tunes to get people to sign her petition. The point is this was handled POORLY. It's a black eye for the business community of Bangor. My involvement with the Chamber has come to an end.

DaddyBiggs, the chamber does not receive taxpayer money. It's a private organization.

JD, if someone is a jerk to you, it's hard to forget. There is a golf course I won't name in the Bucksport area that was so rude to me, that I'll never set foot in the place again. In fact, I take kind of a sadistic pleasure everytime it rains, imagining his empty parking lot. If Guerette was a jerk with power 10 years ago, what has changed?
